Biography

Early life and family: 1969 – 1994

Agashe was born in Mumbai, Maharashtra, into the aristrocratic and entrepreneurial Chitpavan brahmin family of industrialist Dnyaneshwar Agashe of the Agashe gharana of Mangdari,[1] and wife Rekha Gogte, of the Gogte gharana of Belgaum.[2]

Through his father, Agashe is a grandson of Chandrashekhar Agashe, a nephew of Panditrao Agashe, an older brother of Ashutosh Agashe,[3] of distant relation to Third Anglo-Maratha War general Bapu Gokhale,[4] musician Ashutosh Phatak,[5] historian Dinkar G. Kelkar, and scientist P. K. Kelkar.[6] Through his mother, he is a great-nephew of B. M. Gogte,[2] a descendant of the aristocratic Latey (Bhagwat) family, and of relation to Kokuyo Camlin head Dilip Dandekar, and academic Jyoti Gogte.[7][8]

Agashe graduated with a BE degree in software engineering from the Pune Institute of Computer Technology in 1990.[9] He has been married to Aparna Pandharkar since 1996; she adopted the name Jiza Agashe upon marriage. They have two children.[10]

Career beginnings: 1994–2008

In 1994, Agashe became a director at his grandfather's Brihan Maharashtra Sugar Syndicate, and his father's Suvarna Sahakari Bank.[11] In 1995, he worked with Hridaynath Mangeshkar on the music direction of the Marathi song Khulya Khulya Re sung by Asha Bhosle, which featured in the soundtrack for the film He Geet Jeevanache (1995).[12][9] He then released his debut album in Marathi titled Achanak in 1997.[13]

In 1998, Agashe founded Brihans Pharmaceuticals, and began research into ayurvedic medicine.[14] That same year, he released his sophmore album Nazar Nazar.[15] The music video of the title track was directed by Bunty-Prashant.[16] The album was recorded in Hindi and English, with the album's title track subsequently charting on MTV India.[17]

In 1999, Agashe launched an online radio company called musiccurry.com as part of the Dot Com Bubble.[18] Between August 1999 and February 2000, he test marketed Brihans' pharmaceutical products across 19 branches across India, formally incorporating the company as Brihans Natural Products in April 2000;[14] In June of that same year, he established Sarvatra Technologies, a company that developed banking software for Suvarna Sahakari Bank.[19][20] with Agashe having previously ventured into financial technology with the establishment of EBZ Online and Codito Technologies that same year,[21] with Oracle partnering up with Agashe on EBZ Online.[22]

In 2002, Agashe purchased stake in Deepak Ghaisas' I-flex Solutions, after the company agreed to partner with Codito, with Ghaisas joining the board of directors.[23] In 2003, he released an English single in Germany called I Need Someone.[24] That same year, Agashe launched a range of aloe vera and hibiscus based skincare products as managing director of Brihans Natural Products. By 2004, he had partnered with an American finite-state machine lab to develop cellphones and surveillance equipment.[25]

In 2005, Agashe released his third album, an English record, titled F. C. Road, in a compilation with 1998's Nazar Nazar.[26] In December of that same year, he released his fourth album entitled Jaan Le, recorded in Hindi and English, accompanied by a music video album.[27]

Suvarna Sahakari Bank case: 2008–2009

In November 2008, Agashe was one of the directors implicated during Suvarna Sahakari Bank's ₹4.3 billion alleged scam case.[28] His family, along with other board members of the bank, were arrested on the charges of alleged misuse of their rights to sanction loans to firms owned by themselves and then defaulting those loans, thereby duping the bank's depositors.[29] Agashe was in Germany at the time of the arrests, returning to India for his father's funeral in January 2009.[30]

Agashe was in judicial custody in February till May 2009.[31] After his father's death, Agashe was approached by former depositors of the bank for repayment of defaulted loans.[32] In March 2009, he was remanded to magisterial custody after his initial plea for bail was rejected. He was charged with having sanctioned forged loan proposals amounting to ₹1.13 billion.[33] The bank was eventually dissolved and merged with the Indian Overseas Bank in April 2009.[34] He was subsequently released on bail on March 11 that same year.[35]

Career: 2009–present

In April 2016, he music directed an album of Suresh Bhat's ghazals in Marathi with Asha Bhosle called 82.[36] The ghazals for the album were given to Agashe by Bhat in 1997, who had previously written four tracks on Agashe's Achanak. Bhat had requested that his ghazals be composed by Agashe and sung by Bhosle.[13] The album's genre was western pop, and it was titled after Bhosle's age at the time of recording.[37]

Since 2018, Agashe has written articles, or been quoted as a financial expert regarding India's banking sector and concerning government policies, most notably by The Deccan Herald in 2018,[38] The Deccan Chronicle and The Hindu Business Line in 2019,[39][40] The Financial Express, Business Standard and Mint in 2020,[41][42][43] and Money Control in 2021.[44] He has also appeared as a financial expert on several newscasts, most notably on CNBC TV18, also in 2021.[45] He has servesd as as managing director and vice chairman of Sarvatra Technologies, as of that year.[46]

In 2020, amidst the COVID-19 pandemic in India, Agashe announced his businesses will work remotely, and that his offices would function for essential staff only.[47] In 2021, he music directed an album in Marathi titled Thik Aahe, Chhan Aahe, Mast Aahe with Rahul Deshpande of songs written by Suresh Bhat. The album was recorded during the lockdown in India in 2020.[48] Agashe adopted the lyrics for the album from Bhat's final published poetry collection Saptarang.
