Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero (ドラゴンボール(スーパー) スーパーヒーロー, Doragon Bōru Sūpā Sūpā Hīrō) is a 2022 Japanese computer-animated martial arts fantasy/adventure film, directed by Tetsuro Kodama, produced by Toei Animation and written by Dragon Ball series creator Akira Toriyama. It is the twenty first Dragon Ball feature film overall, the fourth produced with Toriyama's direct involvement, the second to carry the Dragon Ball Super branding and the first to be produced mainly using 3D animation.[2][3]

Set at some point after the Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga and presumably by extension the Granolah the Survivor Saga, the film follows Gohan and Piccolo as they go on a mission to save the world from the newly reformed Red ribbon army.[4] It was originally set for release in Japan on April 22, 2022, but was instead released on June 11 due to an unauthorized network intrusion at Toei Animation.

Plot

On Beerus' planet, Goku and Vegeta continue their training under Whis, now joined by Broly to help him control his rage. Meanwhile on Earth, the resurrected Red Ribbon Army, led by Commander Magenta and Staff Officer Carmine, recruit Dr. Hedo, the grandson of Dr. Gero, in order to seek revenge against Piccolo and Gohan. Under Hedo's guidance, the Red Ribbon Army creates two new androids, Gamma 1 and Gamma 2, to act as superheroes in the public eye. The Red Ribbon Army deploys Gamma 2 to attack Piccolo, who loses the fight. However, he follows Gamma 2 back to the Red Ribbon Army base. Once there, Piccolo discovers that Magenta and Hedo are working on a new android named Cell Max, a new and improved version of Dr. Gero's ultimate weapon, Cell.

In order to draw Gohan into fighting them, Magenta decides to kidnap his daughter Pan. A disguised Piccolo, having learned of this plan, volunteers himself for the kidnapping party, and intercepts Pan, who agrees to go along in order to draw her father away from his work and pay attention to her. After learning that she has been “kidnapped,” Gohan leaves his studies and launches a full-scale assault on the base alongside Piccolo, who has used the Dragon Balls to attain a new form dubbed "Orange Piccolo". Unleashing his "Ultimate" form, Gohan battles Gamma 1 and overwhelms him while Piccolo battles Gamma 2 using his "Orange Piccolo" form. After their second fight, Piccolo overwhelms Gamma 2, who then stops the fight between Gohan and Gamma 1. Having a change of heart, Gamma 1 and Gamma 2 help Gohan and Piccolo rescue Pan.

In a fit of rage, Magenta prematurely activates Cell Max, causing him to be released as a giant, rampaging monster. Hedo kills Magenta in order to stop this, but is seconds too late. Gohan, Piccolo and Gammas 1 & 2, now joined by Goten and Trunks (who manage to crack Cell Max's skull and reveal that he does not have a healing factor), Android 18 and Krillin, battle Cell Max. Gamma 2 sacrifices himself to injure Cell Max, destroying his left forearm. Combining his "Orange Piccolo" and "Great Namekian" forms, Piccolo battles Cell Max but is ultimately defeated. This causes Gohan's rage to finally erupt, and he unlocks a new form known as "Final Gohan", which is an evolution of his "Ultimate" form. With this new form, Gohan kills Cell Max by destroying his nucleus with a supercharged Special Beam Cannon as Piccolo holds him in place. With the battle over, Gamma 1 and Dr. Hedo renounce their evil ways and join Capsule Corporation.

In a post-credits scene, Vegeta defeats Goku on Beerus' planet and gloats about his victory as an awestruck Broly and Lemo look on, much to Cheelai's irritation.

Production

Production began before the release of Dragon Ball Super: Broly.[6] It is the first film in the franchise to be produced mainly in 3D animation.[2][7] The original series author Akira Toriyama once again provides the original concept, writing the script (including every detail of the dialogue), and drawing character designs for the film (changing pre-existing characters to their manga designs rather than those used in the anime). It has been said that he is even more invested in this film than the prior three he wrote.[6][8][9]

Due to Disney's acquisition purchase of 21st Century Fox assets on March 20, 2019 and all the Japanese operators has been now transported to Disney, 20th Century Fox (now known as 20th Century Studios) will not be involved in this film nor the production committee as Toei Company will begin handling the distribution by itself, making the first Dragon Ball film to be released independently by Toei in 26 years since the 17th film, Dragon Ball: The Path to Power. [10]

The movie is meant to change the focus of overpowered characters like Goku and Vegeta against Broly in the previous film and instead focus on Gohan and Piccolo as leads and thus bring a change of pace. One of the main fights is Gohan's and Gamma 1's which takes place during rain. Director Tetsuro Kodama found that this setting would be appealing. The decision to reuse the Red Ribbon army as a force to be fought by the cast is meant to be a large scale series of enemies in contrast to a single one villain like previous story arcs. Toriyama personally designed the characters of the Red Ribbon as well as the vehicles. The first half will focus on machine-like villains, Magenta and Carmine. The usage of CGI visuals was made by Kodama is he specialized in this subject and has also said the narrative will further explore human drama, most notably the characterization of Gohan being a warrior as well as an scholar at the same time.[11] Toriyama said that he wanted the plot to focus on the dynamic between Gohan and Piccolo due to how their close relationship is motivates the former even more than his father, Goku, in order to be determined to fight.[12]

Hiroshi Kamiya is voicing the new character Gamma 1 while Mamoru Miyano has the role of Gamma 2. The former was surprised by this casting as he was a fan of Miyano and also because the two would be a duo of villains. Despite the similarities of both androids, Kamiya has said he looks forward for potential differences in their personalities as it would bring an element of surprise to the narrative. Another new actor in the movie is Miyu Irino.[13]

Marketing

A sequel to Dragon Ball Super: Broly was officially announced on May 9, 2021.[8] At Comic-Con 2021, more details were announced as well as the film's title. Character designs for Piccolo, Pan, Krillin and a new character(s) were shown, as well as the design for Piccolo's home.[14][15] The 3D animation of character Goku was also shown in a brief preview.[6] The first trailer was released on October 7, 2021. The Japanese Release Date and a new trailer was showcased at Jump Festa 2022.[16][17]

Release

The film was originally scheduled to be released on April 22, 2022, in Japan 3D, IMAX 3D and 4DX but postponed due to hacking at Toei Animation.[18][19] In North America, it is currently scheduled for August 19 2022.[20]

Toei announced that the film was rescheduled for June 11, 2022, after the Toei Animation hack. Furthermore, Crunchyroll has announced they will distribute the film globally starting in August 2022. This will be the first Dragon Ball film to be distributed under the Crunchyroll brand, as it was previously acquired by Funimation's parent company, Sony Pictures Television in late 2021.[21]
