Request protection of a page, or increasing the protection level

Temporary semi-protection Page has received repeated IP vandalism throughout 2023: 30 November, 8 October, 6 October, 2 August, 3 May, 1 February. Most vandalism was detected and reverted by users. However, the most recent instance went unnoticed. Page was previously semi-protected on March 19, 2022, for 6 months which served as a useful deterant. Requesting 12 months, or permanent Semi-Protection going forward. Protection above Semi-Protection is not requested as all vandalism appears to be from IP addresses, possibly the same user. AmericanHistorian (talk) 00:30, 12 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@AmericanHistorian: I can believe the article gets bad edits but I've looked at a few, including the IP from 30 November 2023, and I don't see any that fit WP:VAND. Can you give a couple of diffs and mention a couple of words we can search for to see the problem? There is nothing recent on talk. Johnuniq (talk) 06:43, 12 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Johnuniq:The edits are riddled in dated scientific racism and efforts at whitewashing history. It appears to be the same user, as the edits are essentially seeking to do the same thing. The material is cited but presented in a way that vastly distorts the meaning behind the publications. Past semi-protection resulted in constructive edits. Would strongly urge semi-protection at the very least to prevent edit wars and the constant monitoring of the page. AmericanHistorian (talk) 06:54, 12 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@AmericanHistorian: Sorry but people making requests have to do more of the work. I looked on article talk to see if there was an explanation. I believe what you're saying but distorting meaning is run-of-the-mill POV editing that is not WP:VAND. If there has been a previous discussion showing the problem, mention that on article talk with a diff of recent edits and a brief explanation of what words show the problem to help ignorant admins here. FYI I was not notified because a ping has to be in a new comment with a new signature (WP:PING). Johnuniq (talk) 07:22, 12 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Temporary pending changes: Persistent vandalism. George Ho (talk) 03:42, 13 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Declined – Not enough recent disruptive activity to justify protection. If that one /64 keeps at it, they'll be blocked. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 13:11, 13 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Temporary Semi-Protection, as this talkpage is being haunted by an anonymous editor with a changing IP address who has been using the talkpage as a forum thread to hold a long and tedious conversation with themself for the past three months. Mr Fink (talk) 03:59, 13 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Declined – Not enough recent disruptive activity to justify protection. The bar for talk page protection is high. Hopefully a few more reverts will get the message to them. Keeping an eye on it. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 13:17, 13 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Reason: Persistent IP vandalism and addition of unsourced birth name, birthplace, and birth date. Eleven edits alone from editor 2601:205:4300:5100* since 2023-11-04, plus others.

Above user is also engaging in repeated disruptive editing of Miles Teller. Rift (talk) 06:14, 13 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Temporary extended confirmed protection: Persistent disruptive editing – The said elections in the article are expected to be conducted in March 2024 along with the 2024 Indian General Elections, multiple IPs and newly registered accounts are making speculative edits, repeatedly. To avoid unnecessary speculative interference and edit warring from involved parties. Requesting to protect this page until at least June 2024 when election may conclude. Thewikizoomer (talk) 06:51, 13 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Thewikizoomer: Would you be so kind and point out the problematic edits by IPs? I see a little back and forth, changing of pictures, the odd unsourced edit...all of which is not vandalism or terribly disruptive. so far. Lectonar (talk) 10:23, 13 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Reason: Personal attacks, edit warring, righting-great-wrongs, and general WP:NOTHERE behavior from an IP over the past 48 hours. They have been warned, but apparently to no positive effect. JoJo Anthrax (talk) 08:17, 13 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

DeclinedWarn the user appropriately then report them to AIV or ANI if they continue. Lectonar (talk) 09:53, 13 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The IP editor was warned about their disruptive editing at Talk:Shroud of Turin on their Talk page, by three different editors: here, here, and here. That certainly seems "appropriate" to me, but...well, whatever. JoJo Anthrax (talk) 12:18, 13 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The warnings are a prerequisite for the reporting to an appropriate noticeboard, like the linked AIV above; this will then probably lead to a block. We don't lock an entire page, be it article or talk-page, to prevent just one single IP to edit it. Lectonar (talk) 12:30, 13 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Indefinite semi-protection: BLP policy violations – Addition of unsourced birth date and unsourced last name (legal name) by IPs and new users. Mann Mann (talk) 09:13, 13 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Temporary semi-protection: Persistent vandalism. Mike Allen 10:07, 13 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Semi-protected for a period of 3 days, after which the page will be automatically unprotected. Lectonar (talk) 15:08, 13 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Indefinite semi-protection: Persistent disruptive editing – Persistent disruption by a block-evading IP user. See this report [1] and this discussion [2]. They originally used IPs under 117.6.92.0/24, but continue to evade the block here [3] and here [4]. ADifferentMan (talk) 10:08, 13 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Indefinte extended confirmed protection - multiple users, probably socks, are reverting the removal of unsourced contents, as well as the removal of a promotional website link. Those people are warned multiple times, but they keep on the revert, without responding to the talks. --Haoreima (talk) 12:09, 13 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Reason: High level of IP vandalism. 2409:4050:2E9F:D0FB:0:0:53C8:3B10 (talk) 13:30, 13 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Declined – Not enough recent disruptive activity to justify protection. Lectonar (talk) 13:34, 13 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Temporary semi-protection: Persistent disruptive editing – Repeated addition of spam links: resumed from IP after account was warned. Vanamonde (Talk) 13:48, 13 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Pending changes: Persistent disruptive editing – Persistent history of disruptive editing, would recommend pending changes. 𝑭𝒊𝒍𝒎𝒔𝒔𝒔𝒔𝒔𝒔𝒔𝒔𝒔𝒔𝒔𝒔 (talk) 14:14, 13 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Pending-changes protected for a period of 1 year, after which the page will be automatically unprotected. Isabelle Belato 🏳‍🌈 15:12, 13 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Reason: Persistent disruptive editing – Despite the bans and page protection, the person remains committed to removing Noktundo from List of Territorial Dispute (removing all mentions of it) despite repeated disprovings of their argument. They have offered at maximum one source or so, and are engaging in a significant POV push, disregarding opposition from multiple editors.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/162.221.123.225

This is their most recent effort to remove all mentions of Noktundo, please protect the List of Territorial Disputes again. They remain committed to this effort, at one point they had vandalized the talk pages for this page and some others by creating 20+ topics on this singular issue. Sunnyediting99 (talk) 14:22, 13 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Newest update, Talk:Noktundo#I am deleting Noktundo from the list of territorial disputes page
User has been IP hopping, and has began insulting users again Sunnyediting99 (talk) 14:41, 13 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Reason: Persistent disruptive editing – IP hopper continues their vandalism and disruptive editing as well as personal attacks, despite efforts to have talked to them. They had been banned via an ANI Notice and discussion

Most recent edit, calling other users "American propagandists" and other insults Sunnyediting99 (talk) 14:44, 13 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

For reference, this is what the page looked like before I intervened, notice just how many topics they created using various IPs
https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Talk:Noktundo&oldid=1186573443
The banned sockpuppet user (who is abusing multiple IPs) remains committed to the deletion of Noktundo and must be stopped. The best way forward is via page protection Sunnyediting99 (talk) 15:19, 13 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Temporary semi-protection: Persistent vandalism – Vandalism from multiple IP/socks. MacAddct1984 (talk | contribs) 14:49, 13 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

That's because it was linked from the Google homepage, and that so many IP users are undoing it suggests I am successfully spreading the message. 156.201.45.162 (talk) 14:51, 13 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Already protected. Lectonar (talk) 15:03, 13 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Reason: Vandalism from a variety of IPs and new registers. Apparently fueled by moral outrage re a recent incident. signed, Willondon (talk) 14:55, 13 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Semi-protected for a period of 3 days, after which the page will be automatically unprotected. Lectonar (talk) 15:03, 13 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Temporary semi-protection: Persistent vandalism. MacAddct1984 (talk | contribs) 15:18, 13 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Semi-protected for a period of 1 week, after which the page will be automatically unprotected. Isabelle Belato 🏳‍🌈 15:21, 13 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Reason: Disruptive editing, vandalism, and content dispute on a General Sanctioned topic. The editor may also have been canvassed or is engaged in canvassing other people here for Wikipedia and in reddit. They are also engaged in spreading my username and making grandiose claims about my edits on social media like this. I also have suspicions about this IP address A, also editing per the request of this user. TruthGuardians (talk) 15:23, 13 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
