First female Mayor of Manchester, UK

[edit]

According to wiki page List of Mayors and Lord Mayors of Manchester https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Mayors_and_Lord_Mayors_of_Manchester the first female Mayor of Manchester (1947-1949), UK was Dame Mary Latchford Kingsmill Jones, JP who can be seen in all her glory, at web page http://artuk.org/discover/artworks/dame-mary-latchford-kingsmill-jones-206517# including the chain with Manchester Coat of Arms, in her portrait by the artist Ethel Léontine Gabain who is to be found on wiki page

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethel_L%C3%A9ontine_Gabain

I would thus suggest including Dame Mary at the appropriate position on the wiki page List of First Female Mayors at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_first_female_mayors Thank you,

Derek Jones Drdjoneswiki (talk) 14:16, 5 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

In your list you forgot my grandmother, Maggie Skipwith Smith, Wilson, La. She was the first woman Mayor of Louisiana in 1937. Thank you, Mary Morris

I found a source and we're a bit weak on early women mayors so I'll add it.--T. Anthony (talk) 22:02, 12 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Australian Lord Mayors?

[edit]

Should Lord Mayors be included? In Britain it's apparently a ceremonial title, but in Australia it's apparently a political title. Is it a similar title? I wondered on seeing Sallyanne Atkinson, Lisa Scaffidi, and Lucy Turnbull while searching for non-US names to add.--T. Anthony (talk) 21:59, 12 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Norma O Walker first woman Mayor in Aurora, CO 1965-67 —Preceding unsigned comment added by 12.104.27.5 (talk) 17:50, 2 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Why does this article stick in mayors of foreign cities? This is supposed to be for just America. Wikipedia is always doing this crap. Wikipedia tries so hard to be cosmopolitan that it stymies its function are an encyclopedia. These foreign, non-American cities should have a separate page if they are listed at all. No one cares to know the first female mayors of the world. We want to know the specific distinctions in our own countries. I wanted to find the first female mayor of Hartford Connecticut (IN AMERICA!) but if she is there she is buried under a sea of irrelevant junk. --71.80.127.93 (talk) 13:26, 3 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia has always been a multinational site. Any focus on the United States found in articles is the sole result of a majority of editors being from the US. There are, in fact, many articles that specify an American phenomenon, and this is not one of them.
Also, just press Ctrl F and type in Hartford, dude. 192.77.12.11 (talk) 04:10, 6 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
It took 10 seconds to find what you were complaining about.

Daurene Lewis

[edit]

I removed the claim that Daurene Lewis (1984) was the first black female mayor in North America. This list includes two who took office in the 1970s, the Dalhousie University Web page claim notwithstanding. --Tkynerd (talk) 16:03, 19 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Emma J Harvat?

[edit]

I'm not seeing any reference to Harvat... first elected femal mayor in a municipal with +10,000 people: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emma_J._Harvat — Preceding unsigned comment added by 63.152.56.155 (talk) 17:11, 24 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for pointing that out (and thank you for being patient should you still be watching this page). I've added her. ---Sluzzelin talk 01:05, 24 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Topicalization

[edit]

If no one opposes, I will move the individual mayors' names to the front of each listed item, so they can be seen, skimmed, and clicked more easily ... in a week or so. ---Sluzzelin talk 15:29, 2 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Alright, it became a month or so ... but I've done as threatened (diff). Any late objectors might wish to revert sooner rather than later, because soon people will be adding new entries following the current ("my") pattern, and reversions will become messy (and tedious, as I just found out) from that time on. ---Sluzzelin talk 17:44, 29 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
And now that I'm thinking about it (after months of not thinking about it, apparently), a table (with individually sortable columns by name, city, country, extras, etc) might be better :-| ---Sluzzelin talk 17:51, 29 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Suggestion: Fork off List of first female mayors in the United States

[edit]

I think a list for U.S. female mayors can be created so that those from other countries can stand out more.--RayneVanDunem (talk) 00:15, 12 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. BeenAroundAWhile (talk) 04:34, 18 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@RayneVanDunem and BeenAroundAWhile: Hey, I've been doing some maintenance work on this list and List of first women mayors in the United States which has existed for several months. It's getting a bit tedious duplicating maintenance changes on entries that are in both lists.
The U.S. mayors were separated out of this page, but it seems like the next step would be to remove some of the U.S. mayors from this page to achieve the goal of letting international mayors stand out more here.
Question: Should we remove all U.S. women mayors from this page, or pare it down to the most notable. I think it might seem odd not to have Salter listed at the top. And if we do leave some, what should the criteria be? My suggestion would be to keep the very first woman mayor for each state, with a section link to the state in the other page? I envision something like this:
1911
Kate F. O'Connor, first woman mayor of Arcadia, Illinois, United States United States
(For more first women mayors in Illinois, see List of first women mayors in the United States)
I welcome comments.--Krelnik (talk) 15:02, 24 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
