Following Wikipedia policy on article names (which says "What .. would the average user of the Wikipedia put into the search engine?") we have been listing Japanese woodblock prints artists under the names they are commonly known by in the West - which means we do not use their complete names (which are rarely used in the West, and for artists of this era change over time anyway). Please see Talk:Sharaku for an extended discussion on this topic. Please leave them where they are. Thank you. Noel 20:35, 10 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Same thing as with Sharaku:

Utamaro - 12,800
Kitagawa Utamaro - 1,530

Please stop doing this! Noel 04:40, 20 Aug 2003 (UTC)

PS: I think "Outamaro" is the French spelling - Google shows only ~50 hits on this from English pages, so I think it should be totally deprecated. Noel 04:47, 20 Aug 2003 (UTC)

Excellent expansion of the article, Jnc! However I'm putting the reference to Outamaro back in, as I've seen it in some 19th century English language publications. In my opinion, it's usefull to include such minutia just in case someone came across and old reference to "Outamaro" and wanted to research who that was; we can assure them that we're talking about the same person as Utamaro. Cheers, -- Infrogmation 19:02, 20 Aug 2003 (UTC)

OK, that makes sense. I may tweak your wording a teensy bit to indicate that that usage is archaic, hope that's not a problem.
Also, thanks for the kind words, but it wasn't much work - it was most a merge upload of stuff I already wrote for my website. Noel 19:55, 20 Aug 2003 (UTC)

Not that it deserves mention in the article, but 'Utamaro' is also the name of a male masturbation toy.

Utamaro and His Five Women

[edit]

Do you think Kenji Mizoguchis 1946 film Utamaro and His Five Women should be mentioned? 惑乱 Wakuran (talk) 23:31, 12 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Reason for Utamaro's sentence

[edit]

I'm reading a Japanese book about the Edo period (面白いほどよくわかる江戸時代) where it states that the picture for which he was sentenced was thought to have been satirising the then Shogun, Ienari, and this is why he was sentenced. In this current article it says he was sentenced for insulting Hideyoshi. In the current Japanese Wiki article, it gives both reasons. I don't have an English source though. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Rsm77 (talkcontribs) 01:57, 23 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
