Mar Powathil was sincere towards East Syriac traditions, not antiochien traditions

[edit]

Mar Joseph Powathil has never argued for turning the Syro Malabr Church to antiochene tradition. The arguement of the author 79.97.60.110 is very surprising.

Mar Powathil has been arguing for restoration of Syro malabar liturgy to the East syriac tradition which was prevalent in all St Thomas Christians in kerala before the arrival of portuguese missionaries. Antiochien connection came only later, in 1663 when Mar Gregorios arrived to help the Arch deacon Thomas- Mar Thoma I to legitimatise his Bishopric consecration. This lead to subsequent antiochisation of that group.

I am wondering the author 79.97.60.110 is confused between the words antiochen and chaldean. The church of kerala was in communion with the Chaldean catholic church since 1552. Yet, it has to be noted that Mar Powathil has been arguing for sui irus sttatus of Syro Malabar church rather than rejoining the Chaldean catholic church. It was because of the efforts of Mar Powathil along with others in the past and present that the Syro malabar and Syro malankara churches were elevated to major Archi episcopal churches with sui irus status.

See the following citations from articles written by Mar Powathil regarding his love for East Syriac traditions not antiochien traditions.

3.As we know, the Orthodox Churches came into existence in Malabar due to severe and imposed westernisation on St. Thomas Christians both in the administrative system and in liturgical life. Even though these Orthodox Churches later turned away from the East Syrian tradition to the West Syrian, the faithfulness to the common Tradition remains as an important ecumenical obligation as CCEO Can. 903 binds us. 5.The Syro Malabar Church in Pazha-yakur and the others Puthenkur. One group was Latinized and the other Antiochianized. Both have partly given up their traditions. Both of them belong to the same root. Hence a profound ecclesial solidarity should be built among them. This division has not been on doctrinal . Divine Liturgy is not in source

[edit]

@SamX: The term "Divine liturgy" is not in this source (https://www.rediff.com/news/sep/05kerala.htm). It's not totally accurate either he's from the Syro-Malabar Church see Holy Qurbana. Sourcewise, it should be removed.71.201.78.227 (talk) 03:31, 20 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for pointing that out, I hadn't noticed that. I've removed the entire paragraph because none of the claims made there seemed to be supported by the source. Wikipedia has very strict policies about biographies of living people, so any information added to such articles must be supported by reliable sources, especially if it's contentious, controversial, or likely to be challenged. — SamX [talk · contribs] 03:36, 20 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
