Development
In January 2022, it was reported that a musical film based on the Disney Channel animated series Big City Greens was in development at Disney Television Animation. It was announced for a simultaneous release on Disney Channel and Disney+.[2] Anna O'Brian directed the film.[3] The film was developed in conjuction to the series; due to this, series creators Cheis and Shane Houghton had to increase the size of their crew, with part of the crew working on the film and others back-and-forth between the film and the series.[4]
Writing
The script had already been written a year before its announcement.[5] The duo conceived the film as a stand-alone story as to avoid alienating audiences unfamiliar with the show.[4] For the film, the Houghton brothers wanted to do something that couldn't be done in the series. Shane said they wanted it to feel like a big event and spectacle, with Chris adding that the story had to be one that could only be told in the longer format.[5] Due to this, the producers decided to set the film primarly in space, as well as to further explore the relationship between Cricket and Bill, as they felt the feature-length format would allow them to explore "an emotional depth" that couldn't be properly depicted within a 11-minute timeframe.[4]
Casting
The film stars the series' regular voice cast as well as guest stars Cheri Oteri, Jack McBrayer, and Raven-Symoné reprising their roles from the show, with Renée Elise Goldsberry and Joe Lo Truglio voicing new characters.[3] Astronaut Scott Kelly also makes a cameo as himself.[3][4]
Music
Big City Greens composer Joachim Horsley was announced to return to score the film.[2] Songs for the film were written during lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[5] The opening song serves as a reintroduction to the Green family and the show's concept, which the Houghton brothers incorporated as a way to introduce the characters to new audiences.[4] A soundtrack for the film is set to release on June 7, 2024, the day after the movie.[3]
Release
Big City Greens the Movie: Spacecation is set to premiere on Disney Channel on June 6, 2024, followed by its release on Disney+ the next day.[3][6]
