Legislative Assembly elections are speculated to be held in Maharashtra in 2024 to elect the 288 members of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly.
Background
The previous Assembly elections in Maharashtra were held in October 2019. The Bharatiya Janata Party-led alliance NDA[1] achieved a clear majority to form a government, but due to internal conflict, the Shiv Sena left the alliance (NDA) to form a new alliance with the Nationalist Congress Party and the Indian National Congress. This alliance was named the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA)[2] and it formed the state government with Shiv Sena leader Uddhav Thackeray becoming chief minister.
Following the 2022 Maharashtra political crisis, Shiv Sena politician Eknath Shinde, along with 40 MLAs from his party, formed a government with the BJP with Shinde becoming the new chief minister. After the 2023 Maharashtra political crisis, the Ajit Pawar faction of Nationalist Congress Party also joined the government.
