Regarding cleanup

Though I was not the one who put the cleanup template up, I'm going to put my view out there on why it should still be there today: I think that since the day the cleanup template was added, the article has improved a good deal—However, the main thing wrong with it now is that it's not substantial enough. I'd say that we could use more info on here about the operation and specifics of the card network itself and maybe its history instead of just corporate stats (Board, Advertising, latest marketing gimmicks, etc). Basically, this section: VISA (credit_card)#Features of the standard product of the VISA article is an excellent example of what we need here. (Except that that one needs to be wikified. But the content's good.) Anyone else have any opinions on how this article can be improved, or have some content to contribute? —Dan 03:27, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

I added a stub on BankNet and will try to expand it to include more about the technology backbone, but I need to research some first. I'll probably do the same for VisaNet, but I've worked more with MasterCard myself... --nathanbeach 20:41, 25 October 2006 (UTC)
I fixed the stub on Banknet —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 70.133.174.100 (talk) 04:57, 5 May 2007 (UTC).
I removed the Cleanup tag. If someone feels it needs to be re-added go ahead, but its been in place since June 06 without a single comment from July of the same year. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.142.39.30 (talk) 04:49, 12 February 2008 (UTC)

IPO

As you know MC had its IPO a few days ago, I updated the article to semi reflect it but it needs work, a lot of work -- Tawker 06:41, 29 May 2006 (UTC)

I'll try to get MasterCard to provide some more information to the site.

Master Charge when?

When was "Master Charge" created by the United California Bank? - Jerryseinfeld 16:58, 14 Nov 2004 (UTC)

The four banks (UCB, Wells, Crocker, and Bank of California) joined together to issue this card. They did this to compete with Bank of America. It was really Marine Midland out of Buffalo, New York that helped make Master Charge national. Until that time there were only regional card programs like: Mid-West Card Assiocation and CAP in New England. Master Charge was the early leader in sigining up banks, because banks felt Master Charge was a more open assiocation. Banks did not want to feel that they were promoting Bank of America by issuing a BankAmerica card. It was only after the success of Master Charge that Bank of America spun off BankAmericard into the National BankAmericard Incorperated (NBI). NBI became Visa in 1977.

Exclusive Deals

I think exclusive deals for credit cards like that are becoming more commonplace. There are at least two counterexamples with Visa, but I'm not sure where (or even if) to add these in the article: The Olympic Games have only accepted Visa for ticket purchases for years; while the NFL's New England Patriots started taking only Visa last year. Sure it might shut out holders of non-V/MC cards, but is it really "controversial"? Kirjtc2 01:13, 31 Mar 2005 (UTC)

What's funny is when these kinds of things happen by accident. For example, thanks to Visa's greed (they insisted on a $20 flat fee on all payments), students can't use Visa cards to pay their student fees. So our school is now MasterCard, American Express, or Discover only, at least when it comes to paying the university. Reference: [2] This is actually going on at many CSU campuses. —Dan 23:19, 13 May 2006 (UTC)

Formulae?

I know that credit cards' numbers must conform to certain restraints (this is how many websites check the validity of credit card numbers). Should details of the constraints be made available on these pages, or is there too much chance the information will be misused? - Jonon 11:16, 21 Apr 2005 (UTC)

No; I don't think that would really fit in here. I think this: ( Credit card number#Checksums ) is sufficient. —Dan 03:01, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

Slogan/MasterCard Priceless Ad campaign

The "(object+price)...(object+price)...Priceless!" slogan should be mentioned here... but how to present it? 202.156.2.138 14:10, 19 May 2005 (UTC)

I think some information about the MasterCard priceless ad campaign (In the format of Item 1: $XX, Item 2: $YY, Item 3: Priceless) should be included as I think it's a big cultural icon and has spawned numerous parodies on the internet. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by AmritTuladhar (talkcontribs) 13:06, 26 May 2005 (UTC)

I agree. Maybe if there is a specific name, there could be a seperate article. 64.111.156.148 23:49, 10 April 2006 (UTC)
The slogan and the whole TV ads format may have actually been plagiarized in 1997 from ads developed by Apesteguia en 1994 [1]200.10.231.249 (talk) 20:22, 30 July 2014 (UTC)

Controversy?

Why does the controversy section get such prominence in this article? MasterCard rightfully suing some twisted prankster is hardly one of the most important pieces of information there is to know about this large and important organization that there is to know. This article is not objective, too much credence is given to conspiracy theory style EFF thinking.

—The preceding unsigned comment was added by 70.112.182.147 (talkcontribs) 20:56, 30 November 2005 (UTC)
Are you kidding me? Mastercard cowing to State Department pressure will be the only footnote in history that even references mastercard. It is major major event and is being covered by all news orgs.

Focus on Litigation & Controversy Equals A Poor Article

It appears that the author of the article was in a rush to point out each and every one of Mastercard's legal disputes (almost the entire aritcle) while at the same time, there's very little information about the history and operation of the credit card company. While a trimmed down paragraph on legal issues is appropriate (with citations), it should be within the context of a well rounded article. One can see how weak this article is when comparing it to the articles on American Express or Discover Card. NPOV was added and than removed after paragraphs were edited. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 24.27.210.84 (talkcontribs) 08:32, 19 May 2006 (UTC)

The best way to make the article mor NPOV is to add more non-critical content. Arsenikk 12:08, 24 August 2006 (UTC)

Year problem

"This series of ads started in 1998 and there are numerous different ads. [3] It was created by McCann-Erickson. MasterCard actually registered Priceless as a trademark. [4] Actor Billy Crudup has been the voice of the ads since 1997."

So, erm...did the ads start in 1997, or 1998? BillyH 00:12, 3 August 2006 (UTC)

RPS/RPPS

I wonder if any mention could be made of MasterCard's RPPS system (formerly RPS), used for online bill payment services. I used to work for an online banking service, and use of this RPPS system was, from what I could tell, rather widespread. Some info here - [5] - Mike L - 10 Aug 2006

Cashplus

Removed the reference under "See also" as Cashplus is a uk only Mastercard branded-card and should not refernced here

Um.... why not? Lambertman 23:42, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

Because other wise all pre-paid cards should be linked from this site from all aorund the world - Cashplus is NOT unique. However if someone wants to add every MasterCard branded product on Wikipedia to this from all the banking providers - go ahead.

If you looko at the "see also" it lists all of the various other major card issuers - ie Visa, Cirrus etc etc - Cashplus is a Mastercard - no need for sperate entry

Actually, Cirrus and Maestro are owned by MasterCard. Their VISA equivalent are Plus and VISA Electron respectively. Now, on the other hand, I do think Cashplus should get a mention somewhere on the MasterCard page provided it is a product owned and provided by MasterCard, and not a service offered by another bank who simply chose to use MasterCard as opposed to VISA.
-- (A.szczep) 20:03, 17 September 2006 (UTC)
It IS a service/product by a bank (Broadcastle Bank plc)and not by MasterCard - hence it should not go in.
In that case I agree it shouldn't be included.

Peyton Manning

For what it's worth, the paragraph involving Peyton Manning in the advertising, which at the moment reads like this Currently, Indianapolis Colts Quarterback Peyton Manning, is doing some of His Life moments using Mastercard and incorporating football in his routine. (ex. Manning buys a cappucino and a man is sprayed in the face with steam, then at the end of the commercial, he asks "Are you okay, just put some dirt on it, and the man gives him a thumbs up, two movers dropping a $3000 dollar piano and Manning saying "They aren't saying BOOOO!!, they are saying MOOOVERS!!.) makes no sense to someone who hasn't seen the advertisement(s). I have no concept of how many commercials this is talking about, what happens in them, nor how they advertise MasterCard. Lindsay 07:05, 31 December 2006 (UTC)

nonprofit? not-for-profit?

I read that mastercard has (had?) some kind of tax break because they registered as a non-profit/not-for-profit entity.

Any info on this?

Is it a 501(c)(4)? Other? http://www.irs.gov/charities/nonprofits/content/0,,id=132157,00.html http://www.irs.gov/charities/article/0,,id=96184,00.html - 199.184.238.232 (talk) 16:19, 12 September 2008 (UTC)

Possible vandalism or original research?

Some anonymous IP user put in an assertion that the original Master Charge program was created by two clowns in Louisville, Kentucky. That sounds quite ridiculous on its face. Kentucky is hardly known for its innovations in anything, let alone financial services (I have several friends from there who are glad to have escaped). I've searched on Google and all the pages that came back appear to be mirrors of this article or paraphrases of it (where people were using Wikipedia as their main research source). There is nothing on MasterCard's site about it originating in Kentucky, either. Unless someone provides a citation soon to a reliable source, I'm purging that garbage. --Coolcaesar (talk) 04:42, 16 September 2009 (UTC)

I'm purging that garbage now. --Coolcaesar (talk) 03:08, 23 November 2009 (UTC)

the edit made by the person from 74.71.95.67 without a user account

1-I disagree with your reasoning as to why you deleted my edit. The CEO of a major international company -- that almost every consumer interacts with (via debit or credit card use) on a daily basis -- talking about the next year's strategic direction of the company *IS INDEED* newsworthy.

2-I noticed several mispellings in your reason comment.

3-I noticed that you are not a Wikipedia user. It only shows your IP address. If a user account with a long time of Wiki editing experience had a problem with my edit, I would consider it more carefully. Possible Mistake?

This article says that MasterCard is listed on the Dow Jones Industrial Average. However, I can not find any proof that it is listed on there. The Dow Jones Website and Cnn Money both don't list it, so should I change this? Thanks, Horai 551 02:43, 12 October 2013 (UTC)

Changed it. I can't find any proof that it is or it was listed on the Dow Jones Industrial Average. Horai 551 08:56, 27 October 2013 (UTC)

Credit/debit?

Given that the product name was "MasterCharge" for so long, does that mean it was a charge card as we understand American Express to be? Or has it been a credit card since the beginning? Georgia Yankee (talk) 15:04, 29 October 2013 (UTC)

MasterCharge was a credit card from its launch. American Express has both credit cards and charge cards. Regards, David J Johnson (talk) 17:50, 29 October 2013 (UTC)

MasterCard is a global technology company, not an american financial service company

The article currently states that MasterCard is an American Financial Service company which is not a true statement.

Some references :- [6] States "MasterCard is a technology company in the global payments industry" [7] states "MasterCard is a technology company and payments industry leader"

[8] states "MasterCard is a global payments and technology company"

[9] shows MasterCard global operations.

[10] describes the business model, "providing a sophisticated set of transaction processing and consulting services".

There is no mention of providing financial services anywhere. So is there any reason we cannot go ahead and correct this error?

Master Card Severance Plans

The company provides limited postemployment benefits to eligible former employees, primarily severance under formal severance plans. The company accounts for severance expense by accruing the expected cost of the severance benefits expected to be provided after employment over their relevant service periods. The company updates the assumptions in determining the severance accrual by evaluating the actual severance activity and long-term trends underlying the assumptions. Total severance expense of $24 million, $29 million and $23 million in 2013, 2012 and 2011, respectively, was included in general and administrative expenses in the accompanying consolidated statement of operations.96.2.110.63 (talk) 23:11, 27 February 2016 (UTC)

What is the status of the capitalisation issue?

I only see it written with a small C https://www.fool.com/investing/2017/05/13/mastercards-mission-to-become-a-full-service-payme.aspx. Other Wikipedia pages also list it with a small C e.g. https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mastercard ----Bernburgerin (talk) 15:35, 15 May 2017 (UTC)

You have a good point there. The c is now consistently lowercased all over the official Mastercard Web site, so it's clear the name has changed. At some point this article will have to be moved. --Coolcaesar (talk) 06:01, 17 May 2017 (UTC)
Might as well at least fix the capitalization in the article text (except for the parts that refer to its name prior to 2016, of course). Barbicels (talk) 23:46, 19 September 2017 (UTC)
In my opinion the title and the article text ought to change together, if they change at all. See the below move discussion for the last time this was considered (May 2017). EdJohnston (talk) 02:01, 20 September 2017 (UTC)

The result of the move request was: Not moved. Our own rules allow either upper or lower case C. User:John Cline points out that the company's own web site is not consistent. If the branding has changed, not everyone is on board yet. I suggest this move could be reconsidered when evidence accumulates that the re-branding has actually happened. We would also be influenced by how third parties refer to the company, as in the examples found by User:Davey2010. MasterCardMastercard – Per WP:COMMONNAME and WP:TRADEMARK. This is the third request move for this article as the rebranding of this service changed its name from MasterCard to Mastercard. This move is reconsidered as adequate evidence proves that the rebranding has actually happened. Primary source uses the term Mastercard in a consistent way, with its brand guidelines as its support. News articles and other third-party sources are also using Mastercard. I believe that it qualifies as the service's common name now. (Included one more article that is a technical move.) Wrong colors on circles

It looks like wikipedia made a mistake, that is specifically disallowed in the pdf. https://brand.mastercard.com/brandcenter/mastercard-brand-mark/downloads.html What that means is that orange should be R'G'B', (where primes mean sRGB tranfer) hex F8 DE 1C, orange+red F3 64 21 and Red E7 1B 24 for old logo and for newest f79e1b, ff5f00, eb001b. The problem is that png created from SVG have gamma 2.2 (in gAMA chunk of png, check with exiftool), but of course sRGB is not 2.2 gamma. 2A00:1370:812D:EB35:F401:87A1:3CE0:3250 (talk) 01:28, 4 May 2021 (UTC)
