Vivian Jenna Wilson (born April 15, 2004) is an American student whose estranged father is the businessman Elon Musk. She is a transgender woman, and in July 2024, began openly criticizing Elon Musk in response to his public comments on her gender transition. She currently studies languages in college.[1]

Early life

Wilson was conceived by Justine Musk via in vitro fertilization and born in 2004 as a twin.[2] She has a twin brother, Griffin, followed by younger brothers Kai, Saxon, and Damian.[3] She describes Musk as largely absent as she grew up and, when he was around, he could be "cruel" and allegedly harassed her for displaying "femininity and queerness".[4][5] According to Wilson, Musk often instructed her to "appear more masculine".[5] Justine Musk and Elon Musk divorced in 2008, and agreed to share custody of Wilson and her other siblings.[6] She attended school in Santa Monica.[7]

Wilson began her treatment for gender dysphoria at the age of 16, which, according to her, Musk did not initially support.[1] In June 2022, at the age of 18, a California judge approved her request to change her legal name and gender on her birth certificate,[8][1] after she applied in the Los Angeles County Superior Court.[9] In the petition for the changes, Wilson stated she no longer wished to be related to Elon Musk "in any way, shape or form".[10][9] In October 2022, Musk blamed his estranged relationship with Wilson on "neo-Marxist" influences due to the elite university she attended.[11]

Public responses to Musk

In a July 2024 interview conducted by Jordan Peterson, Musk spoke negatively of Wilson's transition, shared anecdotes that he suggested characterized her early supposed homosexuality, and deadnamed her. He said he was "tricked" into granting her request for gender-affirming treatment, as California law required his permission since Wilson was under 18 at the time. Musk ultimately described her as having been figuratively "killed by the woke mind virus" in conjunction with her transition.[4][1]

Wilson initially responded to his remarks in a series of threads, dismissing many of Musk's anecdotes as untrue.[12] She later addressed them in an interview with NBC.[5] She denied that he was tricked into agreeing to her treatment, which she characterized as "lifesaving." She also rejected previous comments implying she was a Marxist, though she opposes wealth inequality.[1] Wilson included in her retorts jabs at Musk for his alleged ketamine abuse and his cult of personality.[13]

Musk's former partner Grimes expressed her support for Wilson following Musk's and Wilson's comments.[14]
