"Umbrella"
Song

"Umbrella" is a song performed by Rihanna. It was written by Terius "The Dream" Nash and rapper Shawn "Jay-Z" Carter for Rihanna's third studio album, Good Girl Gone Bad.

"Umbrella" has been the Billboard Hot 100 number-one single so far for six weeks, making it the second most successful single of 2007 on the Hot 100 (most successful being Beyoncé's "Irreplaceable"). The song simultaneously topped the UK (where it is currently at number one for the seventh week, and was Rihanna's first number-one single), Canadian, Irish, German, US, Australian and New Zealand charts, along with the United World Chart.

Umbrella is curently on the Abercrombie & Fitch playlist.[12]

Background, single release and lyrics

According to a songwriter, the song was offered to many labels before being recorded by Rihanna.[citation needed] Karen Kwak at Universal contacted Antonio "L.A" Reid about the song.

In many parts of the U.S., the single was released on March 28, 2007,[1] although its proper release date was March 29, 2007.[2] The song premiered on the New York radio station Hot 97 and on her official website on March 29 at 5:00pm EST.

It premiered on UK radio station BBC Radio 1 on the Scott Mills show. In the UK, the song was released digitally on May 14, 2007 with the physical CD release following on May 28 2007, one week before the album was released.[3][4]

Many major radio stations in Los Angeles, Boston and New York City have played versions of the song that either shortened or completely removed Jay-Z's rap. On the issue dated April 28, 2007, the single debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 at number ninety-one.

To date, the song has received mostly positive reviews.[weasel words]

"Umbrella" became the first song by a female artist to debut at number one on the official UK Singles Chart solely on download sales. The song entered the charts at number one on May 20, 2007[5] selling 34,164 downloads that week. This also made Rihanna achieve her first UK number-one single. After 6 weeks at #1 it has reached sales of 252,868[6].[citation needed] In Australia, the single entered the ARIA Singles Chart at number one and has remained there for five weeks, becoming Rihanna's second number-one single (after "SOS"). It debuted at number one on the ARIA Urban Chart and has remained there for four weeks. "Umbrella" is the first number one single on Billboard magazine's Canadian Hot 100 chart. It reached number one on the United World Chart.

On the issue dated June 9, "Umbrella" topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart with a rise from number forty-one to number one; the song was downloaded 277,000 times in the United States, the highest debut week sum since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking downloads in 2003.[citation needed] It was also Rihanna's second number-one song on the chart, after "SOS",[7] and both songs have records for two of the biggest jumps to number-one on the Hot 100 chart. The song set a record on the iTunes Music Store with the biggest debut in iTunes's six-year history, according to the download site, beating a record previously held by Shakira and Wyclef Jean's "Hips Don't Lie".[citation needed] Its digital sales now stand at more than 1,000,000.[citation needed] On July 3rd, Umbrella fell to number 2 on the iTunes Music Store Top 100 Songs Chart due to heavy sales for Hey There Delilah by the Plain White T's.

Rapper Lil' Mama is featured on the remix, in which her first verse replaces Jay-Z's verse, and she has a second verse in the middle of the song. The remix was leaked to urban radio stations. On the Def Jam website a Travis Barker rock remix surfaced.

Chris Brown wrote an answer song titled "Cinderella" with the same beat but different lyrics. It had been released to radio stations by June 12, 2007. In it his verse replaces Rihanna's second verse, but they share the third verse and the final chorus. His chorus, however, differs from Rihanna's: instead of "You can stand under my umbrella", he sings "You can be my Cinderella". It is unofficially titled "Cinderella Under the Umbrella". The remix was not well-received on Pop radio, and most Pop stations stopped playing it because of complaints from listeners. However, the "Cinderella" remix is exclusively played in most Urban radio formats where the original version initially received little attention.

Promotion

Rihanna has been making formal appearances all over the United Kingdom. She also performed three of her new songs in Preston at the BBC Radio 1 One Big Weekend event. At a mini/promotional concert, she performed "Umbrella", "Shut Up and Drive" and "Breakin' Dishes". Rihanna performed the song at the MTV Movie Awards 2007. In Germany she performed the song exclusively at Viva Live and the 42nd edition of the highly popular chart show The Dome.

Music video

The music video was shot on April 13, 2007.[8] It was directed by Chris Applebaum. It premiered at 10:00 a.m. on April 26, 2007 at www.thisisrihanna.com. Downloads were made available for those in the U.S only. The video was released on the iTunes Store on May 11, 2007. It has remained at number one for three weeks so far.

The video starts with Jay-Z rapping in a rain of sparks. Rihanna starts singing in a steamy place. During the first chorus, she can be seen apparently walking around en pointe. Later, Rihanna is seen nude and posed in various positions with her body painted silver (inspired by the Red Hot Chili Peppers video for "Give It Away"). In the endcap of the video, she dances with her umbrella amid a shower of sparks falling like rain where Jay-Z was rapping at the beginning of the video.

There are two different versions of the video. The version that premiered on April 30, 2007 on MTV is different from the one that aired online. In the MTV version, water effects were added during the splashing sequence. This version is shown on television stations and on some websites. On May 14, 2007, the "Umbrella" video premiered on BET's 106 & Park at number nine and has peaked at number four as of May 30, 2007 , Rihanna's first video to chart on the countdown since her debut single, "Pon de Replay", in 2005. In this version, she can also be seen walking en pointe and the added water effects can be seen. On May 1, 2007, "Umbrella" debuted on MTV's Total Request Live at number ten, and by May 9 it had reached the number-one spot, where it has spent a total of 15 days and has been on the countdown for 38 days. The video also has over 17 million view on YouTube
