Welcome to my Talk Page!
  • I normally will respond on your own talk page, not here. I don't want to deprive you of the pleasure of watching a beautiful orange bar cheering your sight up :)
  • I usually archive discussions when this page exceeds 40 topics. Of course, at some moments of laziness, this page may contain way more than that. But please, don't panic - I'm too good at that without your help!
  • Needless to say, I have one golden rule I like to be observed at my Talk page: be nice, be nice, and after that, be nice. If after reading this, you still feel the urge to squeeze my neck for any reason, please visit this page, take a deep breath, and come back - I'll be waiting here! :)
  • You may of course post here regarding admin-related matters or requests for administrative help. Such messages have my absolute priority when replying. In extremely urgent cases, you may also wish to email me here. I'll address your concerns as fast as my human capacities permit.
  • Sometimes it may take me long to reply to you, but I invariably will try. If a few days pass without reply, please forgive me - I'll get back to you as soon as I possibly can, I swear!
Current state of mind is...

My userpage

Hello: I noticed your lovely work on Antandrus's page; he and I inhabit very similar spheres here. My userpage is extremely simple and rather clunky as you can see, suitable for a simple-minded person like myself, but I wonder if I could take you up on your offer to spiff things up a bit...? I'm not an especially frilly type, so I might suggest clean and understated as a general theme. But I will allow you carte blanche, knowing your work will be an improvement (which I admit isn't saying much given what's there now)! There's no hurry. Merci beaucoup! --Wspencer11 (talk to me...) 20:02, 9 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very much; viele Danke; merci beaucoup; mille grazie, etc. etc. Truly there is no hurry so please do not feel any pressure from me. --Wspencer11 (talk to me...) 18:57, 13 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there. Could you please reprotect this page, as a certain section (Israeli settlements) is bordering on an edit war and some editors refuse to use the talk page before they take unilateral action. I think before you unprotect it again, you should check that a FINAL consensus text has been reached on the talk page. At the moment we have a ping pong match. Cheers Suicup 08:27, 11 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

In hindsight, perhaps I shouldn't have involved you further in this contentious big little corner. If it is any consolation though, this was the same 3rr user that precipitated the issue, though I don't mean to cast any blame, just to perhaps say [as involved as I am], that protection wasn't a terrible thing - there is a lively discussion, but the entry itself seems to have reached a stasis of sorts. Anyhow, such are the ways of the wiki I suppose. Cheers, TewfikTalk 09:17, 15 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

a sad day

Hi, I'm having a hard time seeing balance in the content of this place. For the last few days I've gotten involved in discussions about the endless scribblings about tv show episodes. I fail to see this sort of thing as notable or encyclopaedic. There are other sites for this sort of thing. And today I see Plot of Les Misérables deleted. As I see it this is a sign of a fundamental flaw; anyone can edit but most people have no idea what's important and what's not. I see this site becoming an endless sea of articles about not much with a few important things lost amongst all the dross.

Am I wrong? Am I missing something? And see the musical if you possibly can. --Jack Merridew 10:27, 12 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Advertinsing

Before anything, Hi my real name is John Manuel and my user name is JohnManuel. My subject: I am not sure, but this link looks like an advertising to me. Can you tell if it were or if it were not, and it is fine to be inserted as an external link in the Machu Picchu article page. here John Manuel-21:56, 13 July 2007 (UTC) PD I will comeback right after this because I have two more issues, I think all are related. I keep forgetting it, thanks so much for semiprotecting the page Machu Picchu.[reply]

The link is advertising. For a good link or a reliable source, you should look at the CIA's website on countries. As well, the information on the link provided is kind of unsourced. I am and others are kind of monitoring Phaedriel's page, since she is away. Even though I am not an administrator, I will be glad to answer any questions. Miranda 22:36, 13 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Phaedriel, as I was moving around Wiki-land tonight, someone gave me a wonderful compliment on my userpage. I was happy to tell her that my new friend Phaedriel had done it for me. Hey, hate to keep buggin' while you're busy, but we're trying really hard (on the talk page) to get this article back to a good NPOV state, but could really use some help, from folks to consense with, and an admin (none have answered our calls) to finalize it all. Anything you could do would be greatly appreciated. Hope things are well! Murderbike 17:29, 17 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your offer for informal mediation. I embrace it wholeheartedly. Probably the main other people we need some agreement from are Custerwest (talk · contribs) & HanzoHattori (talk · contribs). Biophys (talk · contribs) and MichaelLinnear (talk · contribs) have also had some interest in this article, though not as vocal lately. (A quarter-Finnish, eh? I'm half, myself.) --Yksin 18:25, 17 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

P.S. Might a request for comments on the article also be helpful at this point? Can such an RfC be run at the same time as an informal mediation? Or would it be best to wait until after inf. mediation happens (assuming it does)? Also concerned about how best to address the plagiarism/copyvio I discovered last night. --Yksin 18:30, 17 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
As well User:Akradecki has piped in a bit, though hasn't answered my most recent call for help, User:Evilclown93 was the initial blocker. Murderbike 18:42, 17 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, these were the two admins who put a stop to the edit warring. Akradecki put a 24-hour block on Custerwest at one point for violating 3RR, I believe HanzoHattori got blocked briefly too. Evilclown93 is the admin who fully protected the article, originally a one-week protection that expired on its own, then an open-ended one after I noticed someone had been making edits again. (not that an open-ended full protection was necessarily what I was seeking, exactly...) I've got a section on my quick & dirty links page that have links to a couple of ANI reports done early on, as well as other quick refs to things about this article. --Yksin 19:06, 17 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Reply from my talk page. First Finnish word: Kiitos, i.e., thank you! Yes, what you said helps. I'll hold off on an article RfC & wait for the results of this information mediation proposal -- & hopefully an actual process.

Here's the diff for the copyvio (made by Custerwest). It's located in the article at Battle of Washita River#October to November, 1868, the entirety of the third paragraph down (after the block quote), that begins "The Indians believed they had good bargaining chips" and ends "deal directly with General Sheridan." This is a word-for-word quote from Gregory F. Michno's article "Cheyenne Chief Black Kettle" online at Historynet.com, on its second page, about halfway down in the fourth paragraph ("In October 1868...") starting with the third sentence. Custerwest actually sourced the article, but he made no indication it was a direct quote, so it amounts to plagiarism at the very least.

As I stated when I discussed this last night on article talk page, the information contained in this plagiarized paragraph represents a significant (though very disputed) view of what happened, & so needs to be represented in the article to meet WP:NPOV -- but plagiarizing is hardly the best way to do it. Kiitos again. --Yksin 19:06, 17 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Another P.S. I agree with what you said about the plagiarized text that "those parts to be rewritten to eliminate all possible concerns." I quite frankly don't know how to do it at this point though, because there are numerous statements contained within that passage that are very much at issue in the content disputes -- most especially statements made by Michno in the original article (& agreed with by Custerwest) regarding white captives in Black Kettle's camp. So to rewrite this gets into a whole lotta POV issues that are at the very source of the disputes about this article. The only parts of that passage that isn't disputed, to my knowledge, is that Black Kettle & associated chiefs went to see Gen. Hazen at Ft. Cobb seeking peace, that Hazen knew he couldn't make a separate peace with Black Kettle & co., & that he told them to go back to their camp & to deal directly with Gen. Sheridan. --Yksin 19:30, 17 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Plagiarism/copyvio still there. Is there further info needed before this can be taken care of? Kiitos. --Yksin 19:21, 18 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I did notice that your talk page is extremely busy with all kinds of issues. (As seems to be the case with the best admins). --Yksin 19:28, 18 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
& yet again, thanks. I somehow hadn't noticed that Custerwest's intro of the Clara Blinn stuff was part of the copyvio from the Michno article. This removal also resolved the issue of the (former) footnote 17, in which Custerwest had modified a quote from another source.
Murderbike has identified two further instances of plagiarism. --Yksin 21:19, 18 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

for that reason

i am delinking the red tribal entities for that reason, because they are red. i am writing them down, then i am planning on making a simple page for each, then relinking them to show as blue. hope this is ok, but i figured, why have them linked if they go nowhere. best wishes, Ono 18:49, 17 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

i understand that as well. I figured that one could make the assumption that, if a tribes name is in black, then it has no link and therefore needs one. If you would prefer it, you can revert my edits; it is really up to you. best wishes, Ono 18:59, 17 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again, I hope this find you doing alright Wiki and otherwise.

One of my articles just went DYK recently, a first for me (also the first biographical article I've written, though a bit on the short side) and one of my highlights of being on here.

So here's a Shirley Temple cocktail (non-alcoholic of course) for you, and some good old German beer for me. Cheers! --BrokenSphere 22:21, 17 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the comments. :) I'll add the John Salmon Ford article to my watchlist and set up a sandbox section; it has to be expanded 5x from its current state to qualify for DYK, so that'll take some digging and fleshing out. I'll start a draft as soon as I find the time. --BrokenSphere 22:55, 17 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Assistence: A vandal Who (perhaps) Want to Be at Admin

A User has put this is his User page "Check for Chewbacca defense in JohnManuel's comments?" Now, What I have done to deserve this offense? I consider this a Personal attack WP:PA. What this has to do with content or improving the Wikipedia? This is a vendetta, perhaps infantile but nonetheless harmful and It was done in response to my observations on this user's behavior, after he has chosen to harass, an attack me, several times, in many subtle ways, for some unknown reason with the objective to get ahead in his ways, and then accused me or irritate me or both. First Warning asking him to stop in here and for this which I did because this user wrote in spanish the "All Catholics Stink" in spanish" the diff now has been mysteriously deleted: here, but he admitted it after were slightly confronted by his admin ally, apologizing for what he has written but now is somehow deleted from the servers??. He has been blocked in the Spanish version of Wikipedia for his fastidious vandalisms. This user changed templates, victimized and insulted users, spam the whole of it. It is very active, go in to the village pumps, get involve in all sort of behavior. In here he does the same but act under the support of Jersey Devil (talk · contribs), Victor12 (talk · contribs), and Ericbronder (talk · contribs). The list is very long, in the Spanish version, but in here after he has been blocked has shown more caution in his misdeeds but he continues doing this, another sample of his fatidious vadalism, taking time from another user, exposing some sort of racism even in this remarks. And I fear that he as become like a Denial of Service kind of menace. Of course he is not the only one; but with the support offered by some users, we eventually and unknowingly, very soon, will have a vandal admin. He has been advised in how to fabricate his way to this point, it seems here. The story shows that this [vandals somehow become even a sysops] incidentally has happened and has harm many users, contents and the whole project at large. I would like you to tell me what we should do. Also, I have already, let some time to pass for "giving peace a chance", and maintain my sanity and neutrality, I think I did, also I have assumed good faith by willing and dealing; but now I am sure that I need to act against this sort of covert but stolid vandalism beyond all rationalism, i.e., this user act for the sake of it (Jackass morphology). Can you assist me in controlling this effectively? Thanks. Also, and again thanks for semiprotecting the Machu Picchu page. It helped. Sincerely.

PD I like your page layout and your poem about the original people of America, it moved me a lot and I identified with it completely. It reminds me of José Santos Chocano with a mix of César Vallejo. Yes I want to add more content, but in dealing with vandals, accusations and attacks, hardly I can. But I will eventually do it.

John Manuel-23:51, 17 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • Thank you for answered my request, I wasn't stress, I just don't accept vandalism, but my expectations remain realistic. But you have even put everything at easy. Perhaps You Can Help

I am unsure how to classify this image, Image:Cat dude.jpeg. It is a standard LOLCat image that I use on my userpage (via a contents page). Ownership of these images is almost always impossible to determine, which is why I originally tagged it as {{Non-free unsure}}. It was tagged for deletion as being in possible violation of Creative Commons. Since it is a common image, I tagged it as such. Still, it was tagged for deletion and retagged {{Non-free unsure}} and I am back to confused.

If you know what an LOLCat image would be classified under, template-wise, please let me know, I would greatly appericate it, because I like the little dude and I think that is all of us one time or another after a long night of editing. Replaceable fair use Image:Kevrichardson.jpg

Replaceable fair use
Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:Kevrichardson.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria.
