Drake & Josh is an American sitcom currently airing on the Nickelodeon network which stars Drake Bell and Josh Peck. Both stars are from The Amanda Show, as is Nancy Sullivan, who plays their mother. Jonathan Goldstein plays their father, and Miranda Cosgrove plays their sister. The show debuted on January 11, 2004, and the show concluded story-wise with the TV Movie Drake & Josh: Really Big Shrimp, which aired August 3, 2007, but the last new episode to air was "Dance Contest", which aired September 16, 2007.


Main characters

Drake Parker (Drake Bell)

Drake is mostly dumb, knows nothing really that goes on. All he cares about is his guitars and girls. He has very more than 75 girlfriends throughout the series.

Josh Nichols (Josh Peck)

Josh generally serves as the comedic foil to Drake. He is usually the sensible one, and is seen as a nerd with little luck with women and an avid interest in science.

Megan Parker (Miranda Cosgrove)

Megan is Drake's younger sister. She enjoys frequently tormenting Drake & Josh, but in the episode "Megan's First Kiss" she says she loves Drake and Josh. She always appears to be a perfect little angel to their parents.

Walter Nichols (Jonathan Goldstein)

Walter is Josh's father and Drake step-father; a meteorologist who often is wrong about the weather. His rival is Bruce Winchill. Walter is often clumsy, out of date, even seemingly empty-headed (for example, he believed the Titanic to be a "fake" ship), and as a result lacks a strict handle on Drake and Josh.

Audrey Parker-Nichols (Nancy Sullivan)

Audrey is Drake's mother who works as a foot massager. She often is washing her hands and reminding the boys to keep hand sanatizer, probably because of her job. She is known to be a little clumsy, as she mentions that as a child, Audrey broke her ankle by tiptoeing downstiars on Christmas Eve. Audrey often ends up burning a lot of the food she cooks, for she says she didn't go to college.

Other Characters

Eric Blonnowitz and Craig Ramirez are two stereotypical "nerdy" honor students that are always being exploited by Drake and Josh, mostly due to Drake's hare-brained schemes and how Drake mixes their names up. The character of Eric was introduced before the character of Craig and has made more appearances in the show than Craig. If you see the difference, Eric looks more "nerdy" than Craig.
Helen Dubuois was introduced in "Movie Job" as the manager at The Premiere Theater, a movie theater where Josh (and formerly Drake) has a job. The role was originated by Yvette Nicole Brown. Helen is known for her intimidation factor, due to her loud voice and orders for her employees.
Josh's rival in school in Season 2 and eventually his girlfriend in Season 3. Though they broke up in the beginning of Season 4, they get back together in Drake & Josh: Really Big Shrimp.
"Crazy" Steve is an employee at The Premiere movie theater. He is hard working and pretty calm at times, until someone (usually Josh) critiques his work, and that is when he goes crazy. On Mondays, he goes particularly crazy, but calms down when She'll Be Coming 'Round the Mountain is sung.
Gavin has a mullet-like haircut and is always telling Josh to clean something unusual in the theater bathrooms. He then eventually cleans up the mess himself - his response (and catchphrase) being "I got it". He's also in love with Drake's mom.
  • Leah (played by Cathy Shim)
Leah is the female Asian employee at The Premiere movie theater who appears only in Season 4. She seems to get along well with Josh and is also afraid of Crazy Steve.
  • Bruce Winchill
Bruce Winchill is a weather-man who works for Walter's competition's weather station. He is never seen on-screen, but is mentioned a lot, beginning with the Season 3 episode Theater Thug. He is described by Megan and Audrey as having good-looking hair and is disliked by Walter so much that he even once said not to mention his name in the house (Vicious Tiberius).
Mrs. Alice/Linda Hayfer is Drake and Josh's English teacher. She adores Josh, due to his hard-working personality in class, but dislikes Drake very much, her catch phrase being "I hate you Drake."
Dr. Jeff Glazer lives across the street from Drake and Josh. He is always called on whenever a serious emergency happens at their house. Although he seems kind during the medical procedure, he is always charging a high bill for his services.
Trevor Wilson is one of Drake's friends. He was also a part of the The Amanda Show cast. He appears to be as unintelligent as Homer Simpson or Michael Kelso. He gave Drake and Josh a dune buggy, which he "fixed" himself. His parents make him take a head examination every month. He is often mentioned, but so far he has only appeared in "Dune Buggy". He also had a Chevrolet El Camino made in 1977, which gets engulfed in flames at the end of "The Wedding". He only appears in the episode Dune Buggy but is mentioned a lot throughout the rest of the series.

*Biggs guest starred in the episode "The Gary Grill", but died in May 2004 before it premiered. The episode was dedicated in his memory.

Many of the Drake & Josh episodes have product parodies in them. The following is an incomplete list of some of the more well-known occurrences:

  • In the episode of the theater thug on TV it has F.B.I's Most Wanted when in real life its Americas Most Wanted
  • In the dune buggy episode before the TV breaks as Josh is watching an old Tony Pajamas routine (a sketch starring both Bell and Peck) from the Amanda Show can be heard in the background.
  • In the episode where Drake & Josh are making salsa, and Megan wins the plasma screen TV, the musical background of the environmental show is an instrumental "Wait For You" originally by Elliott Yamin.
  • In several episodes, fake website domain names are mentioned like Skinillnesses.com, GetABus.org, whatswrongwithmybody.com, meganparker.com, etc. These websites are also mentioned in another Schneider's Bakery show, Zoey 101, which is why the domains redirect to the Zoey 101 page on Nick.com. Currently, they redirect to the Show List on Nick.
  • In the episode "Number One Fan", Drake says "Who wants to go to Chuckie Cheddars?" as a parody of Chuck E. Cheese.
  • In the episode "Battle of Panthatar", Josh turns on the television and hears the Hannah Montana theme song, but the announcer identifies the show as "Suzannah Louisiana" as a parody.
  • In the episode where Drake and Josh bet each other that they would not eat candy or play video games, respectively, Josh was tempted by the "GameSphere" (parody of the Nintendo GameCube. This may also be a reference to the South Park episode Towelie where the boys get a gaming console called Okama "Gamesphere"), a fictional game console. The controller shown for this console was an N64 controller and another was a third-party controller for an Xbox. They are also shown playing with PS2 more often. Josh also plays a Game Boy Advance SP. While supposedly playing a Mario game, Josh says "Take that, red turtle shell!" and Drake says "Jump the mushroom." Then Josh says "I'll jump the mushroom when it's mushroom jumpin' time!" Turtle shells and mushrooms are common in Mario games. Also in this episode, Drake walks into the bedroom and finds candy everywhere. Josh is wearing a top hat and has a giant candy cane. He is dressed like Willy Wonka from the movies Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
  • In the episode where Mrs. Hayfer assigns Drake to have a little brother, two cultural references are present, one of them mentioned twice. In one scene, Drake and Josh's "little brother" Sammy are pretending to be on a cooking show. Megan then shows up and asks "What's it called, the 'Iron Boob'?," referencing Iron Chef. Drake later walks in and asks the same exact question, with Megan walking by saying "My joke". Another reference is when Drake buys tickets to a "Blaine Darbey" magic show. This is a possible reference to the popular street magician David Blaine.
  • Many times Drake and Josh refer to people playing or taking part in the show. In "The Tree House" Megan says their parents are out with the Schneiders and Josh says "stupid Schneiders," referencing Dan Schneider, who is on the crew. In the episode Drake says he wished he had an inside out burger.
  • In the episode 'Megan's New Teacher', Megan walks into Drake and Josh's room to get her 'Pentendo GS', a parody of the Nintendo DS, although when she picks it up, it is a Game Boy Advance SP.
  • In Drake & Josh Go Hollywood Josh makes several references to his G-O, an MP3 player in the show. However, in the episode where Josh starts working at The Premiere, he makes a references to the new "iBot," a parody of the iPod.
  • Also in Drake and Josh Go Hollywood, characters are playing the Sony PSP:

  • In many of the Drake and Josh episodes, Drake and Josh drink a soda called "Dr. Fizz", "Mountain Fizz" and "Moca Cola" most likely referencing the popular sodas Dr Pepper, Mountain Dew and Coca-Cola.
  • Dr. Phyllis is a parody of Dr. Phil and it is also in Brandy and Mr.Whiskers.
  • In the The Great Doheny episode, Henry Doheny is a parody of Harry Houdini. Houdini actually claimed that he would one day come back from the dead, which is what Doheny does.
  • In Helen's Surgery, The Groove Machine is an obvious parody of Dance Dance Revolution.
  • In Helen's Surgery, the show Happy Times is a parody of Good Times and Happy Days
  • In The Gary Grill, The Gary Coleman Grill is a parody of The George Foreman Grill, which in turn is named after the famous boxer.
  • In the Megan's Revenge episode, OR is a parody of ER (also, OR probably stands for Operation Room).
  • When Drake is referring to girls as candy, he talks about a Megathon Bar, which is probably a parody of the Marathon Bar.
  • In numerous episodes, an Aerosmith, an Ataris, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, and a John Mayer poster are found hanging on Drake and Josh's bedroom wall. A Lars Frederiksen and the Bastards poster can be found as well, but the word "bastard" is censored by two bumper stickers.
  • Drake and Josh use a laptop with a pear on it, a parody of Apple inc. This same parody is used in Zoey 101, the upcoming show iCarly, Danny Phantom, and in one episode of The Fairly OddParents. They have been shown in pink, blue, and grey.
  • In numerous episodes, they refer to Galaxy Wars, an obvious parody of Star Wars. In a few episode they even use prop lightsabers(which appear to be Master Replica Force FX lightsabers). They refer to Princess Oblongata, a parody of Queen Amidala or Princess Leia Organa. Galaxy Wars is also referenced in Zoey 101.
  • The episode "I Love Sushi" is a homage to I Love Lucy, right down to the end credits, in which a scene where Drake and Josh are working in the sushi factory, is done in black and white with a heart surrounding the film, with a Latin version of the theme song played. The name of the factory that Drake and Josh worked in, Ball & Vance Fish Corp., is a reference to Lucille Ball and Vivian Vance who played Lucy and Ethel on I Love Lucy. The scene where the boys try to package sushi but can't keep up with it is a homage to an I Love Lucy episode (Job Switching).
  • The Episode "Driver's License," Drake mentions Inside Out Burger which is a parody of In-N-Out Burger. The same parody is used in the Tree House episode.
  • Also in Drake And Josh Go Hollywood, When Drake is driving Megan to the Airport with Josh, Josh is reviewing some of Drake's videos and the video he was watching in the car was the video in the Spring Fling episode of Zoey 101, This is video is also shown when Josh shows the Guy Drakes video in the men's room.
  • In the episode "The Drake and Josh Inn", the Four Schneiders Hotel is a parody of the Four Seasons Hotel, and to the creator of the show Dan Schneider.
  • In the end of the episode "The Peruvien Puff Pepper" Megan goes in her room and starts watching Drake and Josh clean up the kitchen, she says, "boob and boober" referencing to Dumb and Dumber.
  • In the end of the episode "Steered Straight" Drake and Josh are eating with Megan and their mother at a BF Wang's, an obvious reference to popular Chinese restaurant, PF Chang's
  • The show is filmed at Nickelodeon on Sunset, 6230 Sunset Blvd., Hollywood, Los Angeles, CA
  • In the movie Drake and Josh Go Hollywood, when Josh is beginning to read a magazine, there is a news flash. There is a man saying, "I'm standing here in front of the US Treasury (which is actually the Capitol building)..." He is obviously a reporter, and the station he is reporting for is called "CCN", an obvious parody of the popular news station CNN.
  • Mystic Mountain is a parody of Magic Mountain.
  • In the episode "Who's Got Game" the record store has many posters, including ones for Three Days Grace, Gorillaz, Jack's Mannequin, and Korn.
  • In two episodes, Drake and Josh mentioned that they are going to watch Canadian Idol, obviously a parody of American Idol (this could also be a nod to the actual Canadian Idol show that airs in Canada.)
  • In the movie Drake & Josh: Really Big Shrimp, one of the titles on the Premiere Theater's marquee is "Now She's Carly", which refers to Miranda Cosgrove on her new show, called iCarly where she plays Carly. Another title is "Four Great Seasons" which refers to the four seasons that have so far passed during the show.
  • In the movie Drake & Josh Go Hollywood, Megan is reading a Magazine called Persons, a parody of the People Magazine
  • In Drake & Josh: Really Big Shrimp where Josh says " I'm rocking my Daka Puffs right now" Daka Puffs is a parody of Nike Shox
  • In the episode Helicopper, the two young police girls that appear when Drake buys the 1000th ticket name two movie parodies: 'Dreamscope', a parody of Dreamworks, and also Paramore, a parody of Paramount. Also, in Drake & Josh Go Hollywood, while the brothers are on their way to Drake's live TRL performance, the two pass by the actual entrance to the Paramount Pictures studio in the red Dodge Viper.
  • In the episode Paging Dr. Drake it appears to be that Walter is reading a Newsweek magazine in the hospital, but you can only see the word News, it appears to be that Condoleezza Rice's face is on the cover, the magazine is also seen again in the episode Theater Thug.
  • The Premiere often has posters parodying actual movies, such as There's Nothing About Gary, A Walk to Forget, Janet of the Grapes and The Empress Fights Back. Also, in one of the episodes, Drake asks whether they should see She's the Dude, a parody of She's The Man which stars Amanda Bynes, star of The Amanda Show on which Drake and Josh also starred.
  • It is mentioned in the episode Honor Council that Drake and Josh have a pool(which Drake filled with lobsters). But in the episode The Drake and Josh Inn a tourist says they need more water in the pool to Josh, but could probably be referring to a pool inside the house.
  • Also in Paging Dr. Drake, UCLA and Harvard are mentioned.
  • In Really Big Shrimp, Spin City Records is a possible parody of Led Zeppelin's Swan Song Records
  • In the episode Paging Dr. Drake, the hospital that Drake and Josh are at is named St. Schneider. Named after the creator of the show Dan Schneider.
  • In the episode "First Crush", Drake and Josh perform in a coffee shop called "The Brew Note," which parodies a popular chain of jazz clubs named "The Blue Note".
  • In the 'Pilot Episode',(the first episode), in the scene where Josh is getting warmed up to fight Drake's girlfriend's ex-boyfriends, Eric, (the nerd) can be seen in the background
  • In the episode "Drew and Jerry" when Drake askes Josh if they are still going to the premier of Ghost monsters, Ghost Monsters is an obvious parody of Ghost Busters.

Movies

TV movie Drake & Josh Go Hollywood

Drake and Josh are left at home after their parents go on a cruise. They are told to bring Megan to the airport to visit her friend in Denver, but accidentally send her on a flight to Los Angeles. They go to Hollywood to get her back, and end up stopping a multi-billion dollar heist. The movie aired on January 6, 2006, and was a critical success.[citation needed]

TV movie Drake & Josh: Really Big Shrimp

Spin City Records is wanting to sign Drake for their label. He is on the road to fame and fortune, but Josh's inexperience as a manager (and his titular fondness) leads him to sign the contract without reading it, accidentally signing over creative rights for Drake's new song. The movie aired on August 3rd, 2007, and was ranked the most watched TV movie on Nickelodeon.[citation needed] Over 6 million viewers tuned in that night.[citation needed]

"Drake & Josh: In New York!"

A movie is in the works for a theatrical release in 2007 or 2008. It is mentioned at the of the end of Drake & Josh Go Hollywood that they will have to go to New York City to have Spin City Records sign Drake to their label. It is not yet confirmed but is listed on imdb.com and will be released by Collective Studios and Nickelodeon Movies, along with Paramount Pictures. Very little of the plot is known at this time., and it is hard to determine what the status of the movie is right now, due to the fact that nothing has been confimed by Nickelodeon or Dan Schnieder.

Merchandise

There is a soundtrack, Drake & Josh: Songs from and inspired by the hit TV show, that was released on March 8, 2005 on Nickelodeon Records.

Four episodes from season one have been released on DVD titled Suddenly Brothers. A second volume, titled Suddenly Family was planned to be released on September 13, 2005 [1], but was withdrawn for unknown reasons. On January 31, 2006, Drake & Josh Go Hollywood was released on DVD, with two episodes from the beginning of the third season included as bonus material ("Helen's Surgery" and "Mindy's Back".) Also, the episode "We're Married" was included in the TEENick Picks DVD. Also, one episode of the fourth season, Who's Got Game, is available on the Kids' Choice Awards Winners Collection, which are only available at Wal-Mart for a limited time. This DVD includes episodes of TV shows that have won at the Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards, including Drake and Josh, SpongeBob SquarePants, Zoey 101, and Romeo!.

There are a series of Drake & Josh chapter books. The books are entitled Blues Brothers, Sibling Rivalry, Go Hollywood, Kid Trouble, Alien Invasion, Surprise!, and Josh is done. These books are based on episodes from the series.

THQ released a video game called "Drake & Josh" on the Game Boy Advance on March 5, 2007 and a DS version called "Drake & Josh: Talent Showdown" that was released July 30, 2007.

Drake & Josh Really Big Shrimp is a possible DVD release in the future.

Awards & Nominations

  • At Nickelodeon's 2006 Kids' Choice Awards, Drake & Josh won over American Idol to win the orange blimp-award for Favorite TV Show.
  • Also at the 2006 Kids' Choice Awards, Drake Bell won the award for best actor.
  • At the 2007 Kids' Choice Awards, Drake Bell won the award for best actor again.
  • Also at the 2007 Kids' Choice Awards, Drake & Josh was nominated again for Favorite TV Show, but lost to American Idol.

Trivia

  • The living room set is the same set used in the Nickelodeon Sleepover Jam marathon. Ironically, Drake and Josh were special, unannounced guest hosts during that marathon.
  • Drake and Josh's bedroom is the same set that was used in the Bathroom "Stranded" sketch used on its precedor, The Amanda Show.
  • In the first episode, you can see Eric in the back of the crowd that is about to see Josh fight Buck.
  • In the first season, the door to Drake and Josh's room faces where the television is. In the later episodes, the door faces Josh's bed. This is because the house originally belonged to the Parkers (Drake, Megan, and Audrey). Once the Nichols (Josh and Walter) moved in, the Parker-Nichols family worked on the house to replace the door and added a platform where the drumset was to put Josh's bed, among other changes.
  • The house's wallpaper appears to change during the first season. The kitchen's wallpaper was changed around the same time that Drake's bedroom was renovated.
  • Dan Schneider got the idea to create Drake and Josh, out of a skit from the Amanda Show where they are fighting (like brothers) over a piece of shrimp that fell out of a window. Drake and Josh: Really Big Shrimp in many ways can be considered a homage to the skit, as shrimps and prawns are featured quite a few times in the movie and even affected the story. The skit from Amanda Show is featured in the end of the movie.
  • In many episodes showing The Premiere, you can see poster of the fake movies such as "Janet of the Grapes", "Kissed Her Sister" and "Austin Texas" (A parody of Austin Powers).
  • In the show, Audrey's name and job are never mentioned.
  • In the episode "The Storm", Walter does an outside broadcast that is on channel 7. But in "Steered Straight", it is mentioned that Walter does the weather on Channel 2. It is possible that during that time, he may have been assigned to the different channel.
  • In "Number One Fan" when Drake plays his song to his " Number One Fan" you hear thunder and see lightning. When the camera shot changes to the "#1 fan" it is sunny out the window.
  • In the episode "Pilot", when Drake discovered that Josh was Ms. Nancy, he asked, "Why are you dressed like Queen Latifah?" This referres to Queen Latifah who starred in Ice Age: The Meltdown, another film that Josh starred in.
  • In the episode "Little Sibling", Drake mentions an ice cream buffet called Jan & Berry's, a parody of Ben & Jerry's.
  • In the Episode "My Dinner with Bobo", the orangutang eater's name is Adrian G. Favershim. Favershim is a last name in the movie "The Great mouse Detective".
