Template:Pakistani Cities Shakargarh is a city in the north-east of Pakistan in Narowal District of Punjab province. The city is located at 32°16'0N 75°10'0E and is situated at the west bank of the Ravi River[1].

Working Boundaries (WB)

The district is bounded on the northwest by Sialkot district, on the north by Kashmir, on the east by Gurdaspur district (India) which contains the Pathankot tehsil contiguous to Pakistan; and internationalised on the south by Amritsar district (India) .

Demographics

The total area of the Shakargarh is approximately 1,272 square kilometres. According to the 1998 census, Narowal District's population is 1,256,097 of which only 12.11% were urban[2]

It is an agricultural city, wheat, and rice being its main crops.

History

Before the independence of Pakistan, Shakargarh town was the headquarters of Shakargarh tehsil, which formed part of Gurdaspur district (Now in India). Under the Radcliffe Award, Shakargarh tehsil was transferred to Pakistan and attached with Sialkot district. Then in 1991, Shakargarh was attached with Narowal district. Now Shakargarh is functioning as tehsil in Narowal District. Narowal is functioning as a separate administrative district with effect from July 1, 1991.

SPORTS IN GOVT COLLEGE SKG

This institute has excellence record in sports especially in volley ball in which under the selection and training of PROF. JAVED IQBAL[D.P.E],who is also chief selector of gujranwala board volleyball team,the college team won eight successive intercolleges annual volleyball tournaments which is record in gujranwala board history. Many former college players are now playing in national team and also selected by many other national departments mainly by police and army.

Transportation

There is railway track in skg but no rails. Common source of transportation is buses. Teachers especially female staff have to struggle hard to reach the schools that are in villages.
