Doll Domination is the second studio album from the Pussycat Dolls, released on September 19, 2008. The first single from the album, "When I Grow Up" is a hit, peaking at number nine on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart.[1] Also, it is a success in Australia, peaking at number two, and number three in the United Kingdom and Canada.

Background and production

The tracks on the album have been produced and/or written by Timbaland, The Clutch, Cee-Lo Green, Lucas Secon,Wayne Hector,Cutfather, Jonas Jeberg, Sean Garrett, Darkchild, Kara DioGuardi, Fernando Garibay, Lady GaGa, Ryan Tedder, and Chase N. Cashe of Zone 4 Inc.[2]

Each of the dolls has a solo song on a separate bonus part of the album. The Deluxe Edition of the album is also set for a release, with a slightly different cover and five solo songs from each of the dolls, as Jessica confirmed during an interview with NewNowNext.

On September 1 2008, "I Hate This Part" and "Take Over the World" were leaked onto the internet as live Versions and HMV announced a tracklisting for the album, which caused much confusion as it included Nicole's solo songs and unconfirmed song titles, and did not include the album's second single, "Whatcha Think About That".[3]

Promotion

On May 20, 2008, the Pussycat Dolls performed their new single "When I Grow Up" for the first time live on Jimmy Kimmel Live,[4][5] again at the MTV Movie Awards on June 1, and a third time on So You Think You Can Dance on June 12.[6] The song was released on May 27, 2008.[7]

Other promotions include hosting the 2008 Maxim Hot 100 on VH1. They hit the position number seventeen.[8]

Nicole made an appearance in Pussycat Dolls Present: Girlicious singing a song titled "Just Say Yes". It was going to be included in Nicole's solo album, though the song is included on this album instead. Nicole also stated that the group also worked with Dr. Dre and Scott Storch but the tracks have not made the final.

They also performed five songs at a Wal-Mart Soundcheck showcase: "I Hate This Part", "Take Over the World" and "When I Grow Up" from Doll Domination, and "Buttons" and "Don't Cha" from PCD.

2009 World Tour

On July 31 2008, while promoting the album in Asia, the group announced that a tour in support of the album would begin in early 2009, visiting the U.S., Europe, Asia & Australia. Dates will be announced following the album's release.

It has since been confirmed on E! News at the opening of the new Pussycat Doll Lounge by Robin Antin, the group's founder, that the tour will begin in Europe in late March 2009, and then visit Asia and Australia in May/June, before finishing up in the U.S. at the end of the Summer. India is also being rumored to be the first stop for the tour[1]. Robin also confirmed that it will be a co-headlined tour with another major act, similar to the groups 2005 tour with the Black Eyed Peas, 2006 tour with Rihanna and 2007 tour with Christina Aguilera.

On August 28 2008 Ne-Yo confirmed on UK radio station Capital FM that he would be touring with the group throughout 2009 in support of his latest album Year of the Gentleman. He said that the tour is currently going to be called "Dolls & Gentlemen: An Evening with Ne-Yo and the Pussycat Dolls", but that this wasn't confirmed. He also went on to explain that the show would feature sets from both acts, but that they 'would share the stage at some points too'. Tickets will go on sale after both acts release their albums. He stated the tour would kick off in April and that it would visit London, Paris and other European cities.

On September 7 2008, as the Dolls were interviewed by MTV about their Video Music Award win for "When I Grow Up", they confirmed that plans to tour with Ne-Yo had been shelved as his management decided to bring forward his tour dates to November 2008, leaving the group unable to complete these dates due to other commitments. Instead, the group will now tour alone. Nicole Scherzinger said that it was a "shame it couldn't happen, but his record company wanted the tour closer to his album release. He's in Europe in November, we weren't planning on touring overseas until March or April, so that we could spend more time putting a few singles out first. It's a real blow, because we had some amazing ideas for what we could do together." She also stated that the group were already in rehearsals for the tour.

The tour will kick off at the end of January in Europe.

Chart Performance

Singles

The lead single "When I Grow Up" was released on 27 May, 2008 to iTunes. It peak #9 on the Billboard Hot 100, #2 on Australian Singles Chart, #3 on Canadian Hot 100 and UK Singles Chart.

The second single "Whatcha Think About That" was released to iTunes on 9 September, 2008.

The second single in Europe and New Zealand will be "I Hate This Part", as confirmed by group on KISS 100 FM on September 18, 2008.

Critical reception

The album has received generally negative reviews from pop critics. Critic August Brown of the Los Angeles Times, states that the album does not live up to its 2005 predecessor, and gave the album one-and-a-half stars out of five.[9] Likewise, Nic Oliver of Music OMH gives the album one star, stating that, besides the singles "Out of This Club" with R. Kelly and "Love The Way You Love Me", "This is an album that reels off one clunker after another...this is an album heading straight for the bargain bins."[10] Margeaux Watson of Entertainment Weekly dismissed the Pussycat Dolls as a brand, rather than a band. Lead singer Nicole Scherzinger, who sings lead and background vocals for the album's 16 tracks, is also criticized for her over presence on the album, and the apparent absence of the other members: "This follow-up to 2005's multiplatinum PCD finds lead Doll Nicole Scherzinger in the spotlight, and she's no Beyoncé....After a while, listening to this CD feels like a one-way conversation with a vapid hot chick who's in love with the sound of her own voice...As for the others, well...can you name them? Do you even know how many there are?"[11]

Nic Oliver also writes that "the most notable contribution the rest of the group make is posing seductively on motorbikes on the album's cheesy cover image."[10] Dismissing their image as comparable to Bratz Dolls, Priya Elan of The Times writes that "Doll Domination lacks any distinct personality. The exceptions include "I Hate this Part", a break-up number on which Nicole Scherzinger is allowed to emote fully, and Whatcha Think About That?, which contains a cheeky rap from Missy Elliot.[12]
