Re: difference of opinion on Ray Gravell edits

I was under the impression that the contents of the interview would be of biographical interest to people reading the article, especially with regard to his career and background. I'm new to Wikipedia, so by all means please point out where I may be infringing a guideline, but I don't think the word "immaterial" can be fairly applied. The interviewer is David Parry-Jones, the author of "The Rugby Clubs of Wales" (Ref. 1), and the interview corroborates several of the biographical details in the article.

Redshoesproductions (talk) 10:12, 24 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the heads-up, I'll be more than happy to make a few factual additions to the article. As far as self-promotion goes; in the spirit of disclosure: the interview was conducted by David Parry-Jones on behalf of the Wales Video Gallery before my company was in any way involved in the charity. I immediately saw the potential of Wikipedia to make this information freely available to any and all interested parties. As far as I was aware, the interview was as material as, for example, the photo at sporting heroes and didn't require any textual content to be inserted to the article to justify making it available. I didn't think there would be anything unethical about linking to it, as I was simply providing free access to the material in line with the Deed of Trust of the charity.

Redshoesproductions (talk) 13:28, 24 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for that. In future, I'm going to follow Shudde's suggestion and mention the link in the article's talk page, leave it to someone uninvolved to add to the article.

RE:Template:Welsh Premier League seasons

Sorry if you were wondering what was going on. I had problems with the templates and had to rename one as two templates were just duplicating themselves. I have ameded this now and there is now two season sections. One is League of Wales and the other is Welsh Premier League. Onshore

Although the league changed in 2002? Also I didn't try to delete the League of Wales seasons as it was in use until 2002. I had to change League of Wales seasons to League of Wales seasons (1992-2002) because it was duplicating the information with Welsh Premier League seasons Onshore

Okay fair point. Well it's now says "League of Wales / Welsh Premier League" hope you have no objections to this? and we'll leave it at that Onshore

So what is going to happen when the Welsh Premier League is split into two divisions in a few seasons from now? Onshore P.S. I'll leave the navbox as it is because at this rate it would have just blown out as a fude or something

Also Thank You for sorting out the caregories, it was taking me ages trying to change it to League of Wales :-) Onshore

Why is BBC always wrong? Where's Nery Castillo playing next season?

BBC is even worse than ESPN, they told us that Peter Crouchs deal was about 11 million. I have a question about Nery Castillo regarding next season. Is Castillo going to return to Shaktar Donetsk next season or did he ofically transfer to Manchester City. I'm a little confused right now about that and you're the one who knows everything and I just want to know what's going on next season regarding Nery Castillo.

'You should also realise that they didn't use the same formation in every match'. What am I supposed to know. my opinion is that scolari always used a 5-3-2 formation with Brazil and yet you criticize me for not knowing. I take it you are another one of the upper class snobs in wikipedia who claim to be right about everything.

formation for Brazil.

have a look at formation (association football) on wikipedia and have a look at 3-5-2 and you will see Brazil 2002 World Cup winner played it all the way throughout the tournament. Ronaldinho played as a central midfielder and Rivaldo played as a striker alongside Ronaldo and Cafu and Roberto Carlos played as wingers.

yep I was right about you. you are an arrogant upper class snob who claims to know everything like everyone on wikipedia. just because people get things wrong you like to put people down by showing off your arrogance.

enforcing policy!!!! why are u involved with people who want to make people be wrong all the time and writing u should do this and that and effectively saying ha you're wrong and I'm right and I am the best because I am a computer master with wikipedia who has got A's and B's in computer science or whatever and there is nothing u can do about it. why mate? why be involved with nasty people like that.

I've expanded the Jimmy Murphy (footballer) article a bit and added his WBA playing stats. I've made a couple of corrections (his place of birth and when he joined Albion) so if these conflict with your sources please let me know and we can discuss and maybe footnote if necessary.

I noticed you changed his DoB from 27 October 1910 to 8 August 1910. My WBA-based sources have his DoB as 27 October 1910 though, so I was wondering where you got this info from? Cheers. --Jameboy (talk) 15:42, 1 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Tevez loan

I noticed you removed my cited loan, on the Tevez article, saying "it is not a loan. you cannot be on loan from a company". Please note that football clubs are companys, and while not on loan from West Ham he is on from Kia Joorabchian (MSI). You can be on loan from companys per all these reliable sources. [1][2][3] And more recently (this week) [4][5][6]. I think this is quite strong evidence that he is on loan.

CL 2008 Edits

1. a lot of material was not relevant ot the match (and hence the article). 'reactions' was an open ended section that drifted off into things that had nothing to do with the match. this is an article on the 2008 final, not the whole 2008 CL, the city of moscow, or what arsene wenger, capello or joe bloggs said about the result. 2. the road to the final is given in the CL 07/08 article itself. extensively. 3. the intro needed tidying - how is the teams that play at the Luzniki stadium relevant to the match and the article?

i've explained most of the edits briefly, please use the talk page to discuss further.

Jw2035 (talk) 21:43, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

When writing an article, the writer should assume that the reader knows nothing of the subject. Obviously, in this case, this doesn't mean explaining what football is, what the Champions League is, etc., but it should require a short explanation of how the teams got to the final, a short piece about the match itself (as a concept) and its marketing/branding, and the aftermath with respect to the two teams. That is what we have at 2008 UEFA Champions League Final, and I think it's rather well done. It could do with a little trimming in the "Road to the final" section, but other than that, I believe you went a bit OVER THE TOP with your edits. – PeeJay 21:47, 2 January 2009 (UTC)
explanaton of how the teams got there is in the CL 07/08 article. the match summary is unaltered and ok. 'aftermath' is too open ended - you could have reactions from everyone and anyone; look at articles on european cup finals from 20 years ago - do they record the reactions of minor journos, managers who werent even there, etc.. no they don't. quotes from the managers present, players, etc. may have a place here, but it's scope should be strictly limited - what was there simply rambled! it is not necessary to explain what the champions league is, where the logo came from (that's not a new thing btw), who plays at the ground, what a coincidence everthign is, who roman abramovich is and where he comes from, etc...see my point! Jw2035 (talk) 21:53, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

besides, using the last 20 years worth of finals as a template, i could have justifiably pruned 2008, 2007, 2006 and 2005 down to along the lines of 2002, 2001, 2000 and so on. one paragraph, match summary and the teams is all that is really required Jw2035 (talk) 22:00, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

yes, 2007 was a featured article. and guess what? no 'reactions' or 'aftermath' ramble. route to the final is a paragraph and a table. sectioned match summary. no cruft about who plays where, 'coincidences' or what abramovich had for breakfast. read the article and then have a look at my edits - i've brought the 05 and 08 articles far closer to the format of the 07 article and removed an awful lot of unnecessary and irrelevant trivia. please do not revert again without using the talk page Jw2035 (talk) 13:51, 3 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

look, i'm sure you've worked very had on these articles, adding fascinating lists of 'coincidences', 'reactions', 'quotes from wenger' 'what abramovich thinks' etc... but I'm working to the featured article 2007 which has none of this. this is not your pet page. either edit constructively or i'll just keep reverting Jw2035 (talk) 17:29, 3 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

just because 2 other people also disagree doesnt make the article any less crappy with the above elements. the others have been willing to discuss the final articles - you have simply reverted, often without explanation. Jw2035 (talk) 17:41, 3 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

ok, i'll remake the edits one by one, and you can object if you see fit Jw2035 (talk) 17:49, 3 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

well, happily, wikipedia has a history page and i've even taken the trouble to number the edits. all are perfectly justifiable. you are simply protecting 'your article' now. either be civil, be constructive or find somethign else to work on Jw2035 (talk) 18:52, 3 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'd like to request your input at an attempt to moderate this dispute. Oldelpaso (talk) 18:01, 4 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Please see http://www.fifa.com/mm/document/affederation/administration/regulations_on_the_status_and_transfer_of_players_en_33410.pdf

Article 19, Protection of minors

1. International transfers of players are only permitted if the player is over the age of 18.

2. The following three exceptions to this rule apply:

a)...

b) The transfer takes place within the territory of the European Union (EU) or European Economic Area (EEA) and the player is aged between 16 and 18. In this case, the new club must fulfi l the following minimum obligations:

i) It shall provide the player with an adequate football education and/or training in line with the highest national standards.

ii) It shall guarantee the player an academic and/or school and/or vocational education and/or training, in addition to his football education and/or training, which will allow the player to pursue a career other than football should he cease playing professional football.

iii) It shall make all necessary arrangements to ensure that the player is looked after in the best possible way (optimum living standards with a host family or in club accommodation, appointment of a mentor at the club, etc.).

iv) It shall, on registration of such a player, provide the relevant association with proof that it is complying with the aforementioned obligations;

c)...

In this case, Man United has provided all of the above by leaving him with his parents in his own country with his original club. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Eddyji999 (talkcontribs) 23:50, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi PeeJay, I noticed that you relinked dates in the English football transfers articles, citing the fact that they need to be linked for the sorting to work. Without reading all the United sections again I can't be sure, but I don't think it has anything more. When I am king all non-fiction books will have indexes. Premier League season articles

Hi PeeJay, I was wondering whether you had any ideas about how to cleanup the season articles for the Premier League because at the moment they seem to follow completely different standards. For example, some give season summaries for each of the teams (but in some cases, as for the review for Arsenal in 2002-03, they are much longer than all the others and Charlton do not even have a one line review). Some give statistics and others don't, the leads are of completely different lengths etc. I added the rest of the results for the 2002-03 article and feel this needs to be done for all the other articles. What are your ideas? Cheers. 03md (talk) 19:14, 12 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The stadiums/stadia argument

My OED is from 1974 but the English language's pluralisation techniques has not change in the past 34 years. Melinywig (talk) 20:32, 14 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

If you can prove to me, by your OED, that stadium comes from latin and only latin then i shall concede to your "stadia" My 1974 OED and everyone i've asked agrees with me, some of them studying latin. i know people get confused about words from latin like some saying "a bacteria" when they mean "a bacterium" but i am not one of them. Melinywig (talk) 22:15, 15 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Then My argument stands tall. Greek works adopted into Latin do not decline the same way in Latin as normal Latin words. The word is Greek and therefore the plural is stadiums. Melinywig (talk) 22:17, 15 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Have you ever considered that the word isn't second declesion Latin? In fact if it is a borrowed word it is more likely to be a masculine word in the third declension and therefore will not decline stadium/-um/-i/-o/-i/-a/-a/-orum/-is/-is. (Yeah i know my Latin) Besides what you said is that the word is Greek so we have borrowed it from Greek and therefore it pluralises in the way we want it to, which is usually by adding an "s". Melinywig (talk) 22:27, 15 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

But it isn't tradition to do pluralise that way. If the word is from Latin then and only then should it pluralise the way you think it does. The word is Greek and therefore does not pluralise like a Latin word. Melinywig (talk) 22:16, 16 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

kk Melinywig (talk) 22:23, 16 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Just to let you know, I was under the impression "stadium" was Latin and hence declines "stadia" in the plural. The Greek word is "stadion" which also declines "stadia" in the plural. Peanut4 (talk) 23:10, 16 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I see you are quite active on the Man Utd page. I would like to point your attention to this discussion here. I added his height as 5'7 from what I thought was a reliable source [see info box], but having seen photos of him with players I think this is disputable. Do you think you could find out his height with a reliable source?

a or an?

"The Football Conference is a football league in England" from it's article... "The X is a <sport> league" has to be the correct way to go? — CHANDLER#1000:59, 15 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Wouldn't it be the same as "a elephant cage", that doesn't sound wrong to me, though that might be because i'm not native in english. Perhaps [[Association football|football]] it like in the article? — CHANDLER#1001:11, 15 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

CONCACAF

If you're going to revert the template, please also change the whole article to reflect this, so as to have consistency. The reason I reverted the template was because I layed the article out in compliance with that. So if you're going to change one, change the other as well. Thanks. -- Grant.Alpaugh 01:08, 15 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Please revert your last change to United States men's national soccer team as it was your fourth revert to the article in only a few hours. -- Grant.Alpaugh 01:10, 15 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Following the name of the article would use Stade Rennais instead of Rennes, therefore your rv is in violation of 3RR. This is no different from my block for edit warring. -- Grant.Alpaugh 01:22, 15 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hey the OED from 1974 siad that sadiums is the correct plural. don't know when your's is from butt all of the english agree with my stadiums. i do not believ that the word stadium is derived form latin, if it is and you can prove it i shall concede. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Melinywig (talkcontribs) 22:10, 15 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, looking at the article, it looks like all of the points have been taken care of except for one I made about Cantona; the sentence: "From then on, it seemed to some that the match had ceased to be primarily a tribute to the Busby Babes and more about Cantona." - is a very bold assertion by an encyclopaedia. I think it needs to become "...was criticised by the press as ceasing being primarily a tribute to the Busby Babes, and more a testimonial to Cantona." This would need to be sourced, I'm going to assume that source 52 covers it. It's one of those which seems obvious to those of us who actually follow English football, but needs some external verification for WP:OR grounds. I also want to say thta I'm not looking at the article on prose grounds, as I consider that my weak point, so you may want to ask for some feedback on readability etc. from those experienced in the area of FAs. Also, you might want to look at this a few times over, as I've just come back from the pub. Best wishes, and I hope this makes FA! – Toon(talk) 01:45, 16 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

1983 FA Cup final

Is it right now? That's at least how I did on the 1974 European Cup Final, I might have forgotten to add those last parameters in the docs. — CHANDLER#1015:20, 16 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I can do that, but will you see which team won as clear then? — CHANDLER#1015:28, 16 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Manucho/en dashes/email

I'm assuming you haven't gotten around to this, but Manucho is not on the 2008-09 page.

Thanks for the knowledge on the en vs. em dashes.

Also, please email me. I have something to share with you, but I don't want it to go public yet. I can't find the link to do so.

Wembley Cup Final Templates

1968 European Cup Final
EventEuropean Cup 1962–63
Date29 May 1968
VenueWembley Stadium, London
1967
1969

I propose you use your template and you could replace these templates which are on Wembley Stadium (1923)

Every Wembley Cup Final should have this templete

I will go up the 1969 FA Cup Final at put in the details when I finish the job.

I have done 1923-1962 could you check the useless parts but keep the Wembley picture because it shows you the groud with the final.

I agree but when i get to the 2008 FA Cup Final it will be England v Wales.

Cardiff City v Portsmouth

Eligibility

If Andrei Arshavin were to sign with Arsenal, which will likely happen, and he already played for Zenit St. Petersburg in the Champions League this season, would he still be eligible to play for Arsenal in the knockout stages of the Champions League? – Michael (talk) 23:14, 16 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

PJ, as I was looking at this article, I notice there are a few small differences between Manchester United F.C. season 1903–04 and 1903–04 in English football. 1 is the colors. One grey, the other orange. 2. in the MUFC articles, it's Aresenal, in the English football it's Woolwich Arsenal, which do you prefer. Thanks, Calebrw (talk) 04:54, 17 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I changed the names of the 3 clubs you mentioned in my project, but not on the WP page. I'll check both 1902–03 and 1903–04 later to see if they have been updated. PS: Cheer on ManUtd for me. Calebrw (talk) 14:18, 17 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Highest transfer fees received

Looking at the Highest Transfers received section, should a reference to Mikel John Obi be added, even if it isn't added to the table? Thanks! Patken4 (talk) 17:48, 17 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sam Black

I'm afraid there isn't - the nearest is a "Sammy Black" who played for Arsenal, Plymouth and Southend in the 1930s. Mattythewhite (talk) 08:47, 19 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Tom Cleverley

FYI, It looks like Tom Cleverley came on as a sub for Leicester City, at least according to Soccernet.com. Patken4 (talk) 22:21, 19 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I know that Mascherano was owned by MSI but since he signed a permanent deal with Liverpool for £18.6m, should his name be on the Template:2008–09 in English football? – Michael (talk) 02:20, 20 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

What's the difference, I mean Bosingwa's name is on the template and so is Luka Modrić's and there transfers occured before the transfer period began as well. – Michael (talk) 22:38, 20 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Do you think it is best to keep the 5th Round, 6th Round and Semi Final Articles?

Why are you making a big deal about sales inclusion? If you want to know why North American, PAL region, etc. sales are not included, maybe you should ask every single user who did not look for this information. You are not listening at all - there is no bias in including only Japanese information unless it serves to prevent other information from being included. If you want that information, you may find it. Information does not have to be neutral - why don't you remove the review table, since it only has English sources? - The New Age Retro Hippie used Ruler! When there is ZERO sales information besides that, removing the only sales information is doing nothing but harming the article. It doesn't matter if it was the worst selling game of the year, it still is reception and should be listed. You fail to establish that at any point it would be inappropriate to include. - The New Age Retro Hippie used Ruler! Single-match templates and layout

Hey,

Regarding this revert - I've got to admit that I didn't know we had a prevailing style here, but is it documented anywhere? Much of that section looks like it should be combined into a template. Could you give me some examples of other articles which follow that layout and I'll see whether I can whip one up? Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 09:21, 22 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks!

Thanks for adding the license tag on File:Carling Cup logo 2008-09.gif. Much appreciated. --Mosmof (talk) 17:12, 22 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
