My World is the two-part debut studio album from Canadian singer Justin Bieber. The first part[8] of the album was released on November 17, 2009, via Island Records, and the second part will be released in March 2010.[9] Bieber worked a variety of producers such as his mentor, Usher, Tricky Stewart, The-Dream, Midi Mafia and more. The songs are mostly inspired by teen romance and typical coming of age situations, and musically the album is R&B influenced pop. The album received positive reviews from critics, and debuted at #6 on the U.S. Billboard 200[10], selling 137,000 copies in its first week[11], which was the best opening release for a new artist in 2009[12]. It also debuted at #1 on the Canadian Albums Chart[13].

The album's lead single, "One Time", was released on July 7, 2009, and reached the Top 15 of the Canadian Hot 100 as well as the Top 20 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. The followng three singles were released exclusively on iTunes. The second single, "One Less Lonely Girl", was released on October 6, 2009, and charted within the Top 10 of the Canadian Hot 100 and Top 20 on the U.S. Billboard. The third single, "Love Me" was released on October 26, 2009 and the fourth, "Favorite Girl," was released on November 3, 2009.[14]

Prior to the album's release, Bieber became the first solo artist in Billboard history to have at least four singles enter the Top 40 of the Hot 100 before his debut album's release.[15] To support the album, Bieber went on a radio/television promotion spree, a tour in Canada sponsored by Urban Behavior, and was the opening act for the Fearless Tour in the United Kingdom.

Promotion and Release

During the summer and fall of 2009, Bieber went on a promotion tour to promote his debut single, visiting several radio stations and performing exclusively. Some of his stops included American Top 40, Z100[16][17] and Radio Disney.[18] Internationally, he appeared on the European program The Dome and performed "One Time". His television appearances include appearing several times special guest on YTV's MuchMusic, presenting at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards[19] and performing on mtvU's VMA tour.[20] He performed "One Time" and "One Less Lonely Girl" on The Next Star's finale, on September 26, 2009.[21] On October 12, 2009, Bieber made his first non-MTV U.S. television appearance when he performed "One Time", "Favorite Girl", and "One Less Lonely Girl" on The Today Show's Toyota Concert Series. Many fans had begun camping out for the concert over thirty-two hours before his performance,[22] and Bieber went to surprise the fans that were already there.[22] The heavily packed concert resulted in high security and barricades nearly being broken down.[23] Bieber appeared and performed on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on November 3 and 17,[24] Good Morning America on November 14 and 15,[25] Lopez Tonight on November 17,[25] Chelsea Lately on November 18,[25] It's On with Alexa Chung on November 19,[25] and is scheduled to appear on The Wendy Williams Show on November 27.[25] In addition to the talk show appearances, he appeared on True Jackson, VP, coinciding with the days before the album's release.[26][27] He will be one of the headliners performing at Z100's annual Jingle Ball concert on December 11, and also at K-HITS 106.9's Jingle Ball.[25][28]

While promoting the album, Bieber was scheduled to appear at Long Island's Roosevelt Fields Mall, but the performance had to be cancelled.[29] TMZ first reported the story, and it was covered by several national media outlets. Over 3,000 screaming fans showed up for the appearance. The event got out of control and over 35 police units from Nassau County and Garden City had to be called in. According to TMZ, a fan screamed that Bieber was in an Abercrombie Kids store, and that is when the mayhem already taking place got further out of hand. [30] Several fans were injured, but no serious injures took place. The police told Bieber he could not come in because of the current situation and fire hazard. In an interview with WBLI 106.1, Bieber stated, "It was so crazy that I couldn't get to even come in the building," the singer said. "They [the authorities] basically threatened to put me in cuffs and send me away to jail."[29] The police arrested a Island Records senior vice-president, James A. Roppo, reportedly for hindering the police's crowd control efforts.[29] Bieber took to Twitter, apologizing to fans, and promising to make up for the cancellation.

Singles

Bieber's debut single, and the lead off single to the album, "One Time", was released on July 7, 2009. It was made into a music video, directed by Vashtie Kola. As of October 2009, the video has received more than 10 million views of Bieber's YouTube channel.[35] The single eventually went on to become a minor international hit. In Canada, on the Canadian Hot 100 the song reached #12 in it's opening week. In the United States, it reached #20 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #6 on the Heatseekers Songs charts. Outside of North America, it reached #30 in Austria, #14 in Germany and #1 in the Philippines. In early October 2009, "One Time" was certified Platinum by the Canadian Recording Industry Association[21] and Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America.[36]

iTunes released exclusive singles as part of "Countdown to My World." "One Less Lonely Girl" was released on October 6, 2009 as the album's second single. The single had 113,000 downloads in its first week, propelling it to debut at #16 on the Billboard Hot 100. Bieber's debut was the second highest debut of the week, only being surpassed by Britney Spears's 3.[37] "Love Me" was released on October 26, 2009, and peaked at #12 in Canada and #37 in the U.S.[14] "Favorite Girl" was released on November 3, 2009, and peaked at #15 in Canada and #26 in the U.S.[14] Due to the releasing of the album, the remaining songs on the album charted. "Down to Earth" charted at #61 in Canada and #79 in the U.S., "Bigger" charted at #78 in Canada and #94 in the U.S., and "First Dance" charted at #88 in Canada and #99 in the U.S. An iTunes bonus track, "Common Denominator" charted #72 in Canada.

Critical reception

Initial response to the album has been generally positive. Mikael Wood of Entertainment Weekly gave My World a B-, saying that the "sugary puppy-love ballads and dinky dance-pop confections" were not surprising. However, he commended songs such as "Love Me", calling it a "killer electro-glam groove", and overall commending the album, hoping that Bieber's "swagger" continues to grow with age.[3] Ashante Infantry of Toronto Star gave the album 3 1/2 out of 4 stars, saying that Bieber sounds like a "young Chris Brown with overdubbed New Edition-style harmonies", and that is production team "songwriters found the right combination of hip-hop beats and love-struck lyrics for the Canadian's earnest pubescent vocals."[4] Allmusic gave the album 3 1/2 out of 5 stars, comparing Bieber to Chris Brown and Ne-Yo, and calls the album "a set of songs that isn't quite top-level quality, but the singer more than gets by on his squeaky-clean charm and natural ability."[2]

Sputnikmusic.com, however, gave the album a 1.5/5, saying: "This album will no doubt sell hundreds of thousands of copies, and I urge you not to add to that statistic. If you take some masochistic pleasure in listening to the same song eight times in a row, then by all means go ahead and blow 10 bucks on this."
