The 2011 Formula One season will be the 62nd FIA Formula One season.

Signed teams and drivers

After a dispute between the Formula One Teams Association (FOTA) and the FIA in the first half of 2009, a new Concorde Agreement was signed on 1 August 2009 by the then FIA president Max Mosley and all of the existing teams at the time. The new agreement provides for a continuation of the terms of the 1998 agreement, and runs until 31 December, 2012.[1]

By the beginning of 2010, a number of details for the 2011 Championship had already been announced or reported as confirmed from some sources. Even if under contract and currently, there is no assurance a driver will be awarded a position without official announcement by a team and is subject to significant change.

Planned and possible races

In January 2009, the Portuguese magazine Autosport reported the possible return of Formula One to Portugal, at the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve in 2011. F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone has also visited the Portimão circuit. He is concerned as to how many European races the sport will have in future, and doubts that other European countries can maintain their races. It is possible the Portuguese Grand Prix will return in 2011.[10]

Ecclestone is in negotiations to bring the Argentine Grand Prix back to the Formula One calendar.[11] Although the former Grand Prix track Autódromo Juan y Oscar Gálvez and a street circuit in Mar del Plata have been discussed, he demands a new circuit to be built.

The FFSA have a contract to host the French Grand Prix in 2011, although not at the Circuit de Nevers Magny-Cours. Intially the new Flins-Les Mureaux circuit was mentioned, however this was later scrapped[12] and other possibilities are now being considered, for example Circuit Paul Ricard.[13]

In September 2009, the Bulgarian Motorcycling Foundation announced plans to secure a Bulgarian Grand Prix at the old Dobroslavtsi airfield near Sofia.[14] On 13 November however, it was reported that plans for the race had stalled as the Bulgarian Government could not provide the necessary funds to go with the land, and private investment could not be found.[15]

In November 2009, former racer and team owner Toni Charouz announced plans for a Czech Grand Prix to potentially be held at a brand-new two and a half-mile circuit, three miles from the centre of Prague.[16] The race may not take place in 2011, but some time in the new decade; its inclusion on the calendar depends on the success of a DTM event to be held once the circuit is complete.

In December 2009, plans were unveiled for a street circuit in Rome, to be held in the city's EUR district. The event is schedule for an August 2012 calendar space, though promoter Maurizio Flammini admits it could be brought forward to 2011 if the required infrastructure is built "in record time".[17]

Changes

Calendar changes

  • Tyre supplier Bridgestone has announced that it will not renew its contract with Formula One at the end of the 2010 season,[28] meaning a new tyre supplier will have to be found.
