Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing is a racing game currently in production for Wii, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Nintendo DS and Microsoft Windows, featuring characters from many Sega franchises, as well as guest characters. It is being published by Sega and developed by Sumo Digital. It was announced on May 28, 2009 and will be released on February 23, 2010.

The theme song for the game will be So Much More... by singer Bentley Jones.

Gameplay

The game is a mascot kart racing game, very similar to other games in its genre like Mario Kart, Konami Krazy Racers and Crash Team Racing. Characters race through various race circuits themed on different Sega franchises and collect power-ups to boost their speed or hamper their opponents. Additional boost can be earned by successfully executing drift turns, or performing tricks whilst in midair. Like Sumo's previous Sega game, Sega Superstars Tennis, each character has a special ability (called an "All-Star Move") unique to them that they may use to their advantage (such as Sonic transforming into Super Sonic and AiAi riding in marbles), which they can obtain if they are running behind in the race. How long each All-Star move lasts depends on the character's current position.

Vehicles are separated into four different categories: racing, off-road, bike and hovercraft. As the terrain on the tracks will vary, vehicles can be either assisted or hindered by the surfaces they drive upon. For example, racing-type vehicles perform best on hard surfaces such as wood or concrete, but are hampered by soft terrain such as mud, sand or snow. The opposite is true for off-road type vehicles. Hovercraft are not affected by any terrain and are able to perform multiple boosts after a jump, but they are unable to drift and have low acceleration. All of the vehicles also have their own specific engine sounds. By playing through the game, players can earn Sega Miles that can be spent in the in-game shop to unlock additional content such as characters, tracks, art and songs.[4]

The game will have customizable multiplayer options for up to four players on split-screen and eight players online, including Free Races and Arena Modes. There will also be Grand Prix, Time Trials and Mission mode.[5][6][7]

The game was showcased at E3 2009, where it was stated that the final version of the game will have over 20 different characters.[8]

At Summer of Sonic 2009 Steve Lycett, Executive Producer and Travis Ryan, Lead Designer of Sonic and Sega All-Stars Racing were present for a Q&A. A PlayStation 3 demo was also available for attendees to play. It was identical to the Comic-Con demo.[9]

On November 25, 2009, a special press event about the game was held in France, where the DS version made its playable debut.[6]

Planned characters

ToeJam & Earl were originally planned to be in Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing as a duo driving their spaceship, but Sega could not come to terms with ToeJam & Earl Productions co-founder Greg Johnson.[29] However, fans have called and mass-emailed Mr. Johnson for his characters' return.[30][31] He has responded on the official SEGA forums under the pseudonym 'Big Earl' stating "I'll give it another try and see if I can get the homies at Sega to talk again on the phone."[32][33] He later mentioned that the duo will not be appearing in the retail game, since it is too late in development, but the option for including them as downloadable content is still open, although Sega has yet to plan any specific details about DLC.[34][35]

It has been hinted in an interview with Sumo Digital's Steve Lycett in SEGAOnline magazine that Akira Yuki from the Virtua Fighter series could be an unlockable character.[36] The official minisite's All Star Moves section revealed Jacky Bryant as a playable character, with an icon of Akira representing his All Star move. Lycett has also talked about Vyse from Skies of Arcadia in an interview with Gamereactor.[37]

In its prototype form, Gilius Thunderhead from Golden Axe was a playable character who rode one of the Chickenleg monsters from the game. In his developer diary, Lycett makes it clear that this does not confirm him as a final character.[38] Segata Sanshiro was also considered as a possible character, riding a Sega Saturn, though is probably unlikely to show up in the final title.[39]

Lycett has also mentioned there will be various cameo appearances from other Sega characters who didn't make it in the playable roster.[40]

Development

Following the release of Sega Superstars Tennis, Sumo Digital decided to do a racing title, based on their experience with recent Out Run titles. In an early prototype of the game, Sonic raced on foot, Dr. Eggman rode an Eggpod with legs, Tails flew in a biplane, Amy Rose drove a car with Cream the Rabbit as a passenger and Gilius Thunderhead from Golden Axe rode one of the Chickenleg creatures from the game. This version, however, was reportedly not fun to play, largely due to the varying sizes between the different characters, but also because the drift mechanic wouldn't work with racers who were on foot. It was later revised so that everyone would be in cars, bikes, or modified flyers.[38]

The soundtrack for the game will consist of various old and new tracks from the various Sonic and Sega franchises, though it will also feature original songs by various artists including Richard Jacques. Each course will start with one track, with more being unlocked as players earn Sega Miles. The Nintendo DS version of the game will feature MIDI versions of the tracks composed by Allister Brimble.[4] The main theme song of the game will be So Much More by Bentley Jones.[41]

Downloadable Content

On September 22, 2009, Sega accidentally leaked top secret information from a corporate meeting with Sony Computer Entertainment America, in which it was revealed that characters from non-Sega IP were being considered as platform-exclusive DLC for the game, the notes mention having characters from Rareware properties and the Fable universe for the Xbox 360 version of the game.[42] On November 29, 2009, a prototype boxart by designer Chris Lewis was posted on his portfolio website, which depicted Banjo and Kazooie on the back of the box.[43] Access to his site was later blocked off from public access, and Lycett cited the rumors as improbable.[44] On December 15, 2009, images were found on Sega of America's official site, showing Banjo and Kazooie on the Xbox 360 boxart.[45] They were officially announced on December 17, 2009.[46] Lycett has hinted that other platforms may receive exclusive characters.[47]

The game's entry on Xbox.com states the game will support downloadable content.[48] In a Q&A with Development Director, Craig Duncan, it was said that DLC would only be made available if the game becomes a commercial success.[6] It has also been confirmed that the Ninendo Wii version will have Miis as playable characters.
