A total of twenty teams will contest the league, including seventeen sides from the 2009–10 season and three promoted teams from the 2009–10 Football League Championship. Arsenal, Aston Villa, Birmingham City, Blackburn Rovers, Chelsea, Everton, Fulham, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Stoke City, Sunderland and Tottenham Hotspur have ensured they will remain in the Premier League in 2010–11.

Newcastle United were the first team to secure promotion from the 2009–10 Football League Championship after third-placed Nottingham Forest drew with Cardiff City 0–0 on 5 April 2010[2], thus ensuring the team from the North-East would remain at least in the top two positions of the league. West Bromwich Albion joined them on 10 April 2010, after a 3–2 victory over Doncaster Rovers.[3] Both teams will make their immediate return to the highest English football league after being relegated at the end of the 2008–09 season.

Portsmouth were the first team to be relegated from 2009–10 Premier League after West Ham United beat Sunderland 1–0 on 10 April 2010.[4] Portsmouth ended an eight-year tenure as members of the Premier League.

Only two teams have yet to be confirmed as members of the league. One of these spots will be filled by the winners of the the League Championship playoffs. As to date, Nottingham Forest, Cardiff City and Leicester City have qualified for the playoffs. The last spot for the playoffs will be given to the best placed team from Blackpool and Swansea City. The other spot will be filled by of of West Ham United, Hull City or Burnley, who are the only three clubs left fighting to avoid relagation.
