Joy is Canadian singer-songwriter Fefe Dobson's official sophomore studio album. This is because her second album, Sunday Love was not released. During production of Joy on her manager's record label (21 Music), she was re-signed to her original major record label (Island Records). Both labels are now working on the album that is scheduled for release on June 15, 2010.[4]

Background

After parting ways with her previous label, Island Records, Fefe Dobson decided to go back to her roots and create a new album on her own terms. She said in an April 2007 interview that her new efforts were coming along nicely and should see the light of day sooner than later.[5]

In early 2008 a new song, "Watch Me Move" was heard in promos for the NBC show, Lipstick Jungle.[6] It was also used as the Title theme for comedian Margaret Cho's The Cho Show.[7][8] "Watch Me Move" was released as a digital download on September 9, 2008.[9] In an interview in January 2009, Dobson said that "Watch Me Move" was a "teaser to what's to come" and hinted that the first single and promotional video will be released soon and will have a "soft rock vibe".[10][dead link]

A song was posted by Dobson in February 2009, titled "I Want You". The song was featured on her official website for a time, and is now on her imeem. In April 2009, Dobson released a video blog of updates, stating that her album is finally complete, and that it should be available soon. In May 2009, she posted a mix of both "Watch Me Move" and "I Want You", entitled "I Want You 2 Watch Me Move" on her imeem, MySpace, and official website. Dobson confirmed that the song is the first official single from her upcoming album, Joy. A music video was shot for the single on May 23, 2009. Photos from the video shoot were subsequently released by MuchMusic. Dobson officially released "I Want You" as a digital download on July 3, 2009.[11] The song is featured in promos for the VH1 show, Megan Wants a Millionaire.[12][13] On August 5, 2009 the video premiered on MTV,[14][15] The N,[16] and LOGO.[16] It consists of four incarnations, the individual songs of "I Want You", "Watch Me Move", "I Want You (remix)" and a mash up titled "I Want You 2 Watch Me Move."[14][16]

On August 27, 2009 Dobson gave us a "sneak peak" of her song "Paranoia" also stating that it will be a single.[17] It was featured in the promo for the Fox series, Fringe.[18]

"I Want You" is in at least three versions of TV Spot ads for the movie Whip It.[19][20][21] The 2009 film is the directorial debut of Drew Barrymore.[22]

Tommy2.net first revealed the cover on March 20, 2010, [23] with the tracklist following on April 2, 2010. [24] Even though Fefe herself stated that "Paranoia" would be a single, the song was left off the final tracklist which may lead to it being a bonus track.

Live performances

  • August 11, 2009 — Showcase performance at the Mercury Lounge in New York City.[25][26] Attendance was by invitation only and included fans and music industry tastemakers. "Fefe performed a set — which included old favorites from her self-titled debut album and upcoming sophomore effort, Joy — that was drenched with passion, soaked with edge, and slicked with pop perfection."[27] "Her new songs were incredibly well received and displayed the incredible growth and maturity of Fefe’s music."[25] One of the new songs heard was "I Made Out with Your Boyfriend" and a video was captured by a correspondent.[28] In an interview at the showcase Dobson mused, "It's almost like when an animal is in a small cage, but when you let it out it's running around like crazy. That's how I feel when I'm onstage."[29] There are also photos of the event.[26][27][28]
  • September 27, 2009 — "I Want You" at the finale of the second season of the Canadian Cable TV show The Next Star.[32]
The Show Must Go...On The Road Tour!!

Dobson is currently performing on a twenty city tour across Canada in March and April 2010 on Hedley's "The Show Must Go...On The Road Tour". Hedley announced the tour in support of their new album The Show Must Go which was released November 17, 2009. "Fefe Dobson and Stereos will be along for the whole trek, while Faber Drive and Boys Like Girls will support on select dates."[53]
