C.I.D. is an Indian television series airs on Sony Entertainment Television. The series is about a team of detectives belonging to the Crime Investigation Division of the Mumbai Police. It stars Shivaji Satam. The series is regarded as the longest running crime investigation TV series in India. The first investigative series on Indian Television, is today one of the most popular shows on Sony Entertainment Television. Senior Inspector Abhijeet and Inspector Daya are also the major characters.
The series consists of hard-core police procedural stories dealing with investigation, detection and suspense. The protagonists of the serial are an elite group of police officers belonging to the Crime Investigation Department of the police force, led by ACP Pradyuman (played by the dynamic Shivaji Satam). While the stories are plausible, there is an emphasis on dramatic plotting and technical complexities faced by the police.
In 21 January 1998, Sony Entertainment Television and Fireworks Productions launched a weekly crime thriller called CID. CID set another record in 7 November 2004, when Mr B.P. Singh entered Guinness Book of World Records for canning an entire episode of CID named The Inheritance / C.I.D. 111 in just one single shot of 111 minutes (one hour fifty one minutes) without a single cut.
In 3 January 2005 Sony Entertainment Television and Fireworks Productions launched a daily investigative thriller called CID Special Bureau, which had a run of 168 episodes. But unfortunately in 27 April 2006, it ended its CID Special Bureau.
In 7 July 2006 launched a nation wide hunt called "CID Operation Talaash" in search of a new officer to join the CID team, which ended on 1 September 2006. Vivek Mashru was declared the winner of the hunt and his characters name is also Vivek.
CID is the longest running show in the history of [Indian Television] . [citation needed] It is a laborious effort of years by Fireworks Production, Mr. BP Singh, Mr. Pradeep Uppoor and their team of actors, writers and production. After its success CID's producers had arranged an Award function named "CID Gallantry Awards" on Tuesday, 26 January 2010 at 9:00 pm IST on Sony Entertainment Television to celebrate their 12th anniversary.
The C.I.D series is mainly popularly due to its strong performances, sometimes unintentionally funny dialogues, various twists and turns and eccentric cases. It has become a rage amongst the youth of India.
The CID team currently comprises of ACP Pradyuman, Abhijeet, Daya, Fredricks, Vivek, Tasha, Dr.Taarika and Dr.Salukhe. The actors – Shivaji Satham, Aditya Srivastava, Dayanand Shetty, Dinesh Phadnis and others, are the pillars of the show. Two new characters namely, Inspectors Sachin, Kajal were revealed on the 14 May 2010 episode of C.I.D, Dr. Sonali were revealed on the 21 May 2010 episode of C.I.D .More new characters and a new format is set to be unveiled on the 11 June 2010.
Episodes
Some episode of C.I.D. starts with a member of the team describing the events of a crime, which is followed by the crime being occurred, and the C.I.D being called out to interrogate the case. Occasionally, while the crime is being committed, the team is usually playing games in the bureau; such as playing chess, talking about Cricket, or picking on Inspector Fredricks for his actions. When contacted, the C.I.D. team goes to the crime scene, and start their search for evidence. Actually the CID is called by the Mumbai Police when a crime is too complex to solve using local police station based resources, or when cross-jurisdictional issues are involved. Additionally the CID team has the best equipped forensic pathology lab, and the latest in computerized equipment, and ballistic tests machines. They also are directly linked to the National Fingerprint database and to Interpol's international crime database. Hence their added value in the series. They always believe in one statement: "Every criminal always leaves something behind".
They search the setting until they find something, even the smallest thing, such as a strand of hair. The body, if it is a murder case, is taken to the forensic lab, where Dr. Salunkhe and his assistant, Dr. Tarika study the body. Dr. Salukhe tells interesting things on how the person may have died. He may have been stabbed by a knife, but he may be killed by poison. The C.I.D. team interrogates all the witnesses. After a lot of hard work, which involves lot of driving, running around and Inspector Daya breaking at least one door in each episode, the C.I.D. team solves the case and catch the criminal.
Each episode ends with the C.I.D. members catching the criminal after some brief action with guns and a handful of punches and kicks (mostly delivered by Daya) and explaining the details of the crime. The criminal always denies the allegations till one of the C.I.D. member slaps him/her. In the next shot, he/she is seen to be sitting on a chair in the bureau and confessing everything while crying. Finally one of the officers (mostly the ACP) tells the criminal what likely punishment they will receive for this crime. Mostly, capital punishment is awarded to men criminals and life imprisonment to women except in a few episodes. Now in the newer episodes, a few women have been awarded capital punishment as well.

CID for the record
Limca Book of Records / Guiness Book of World Records
- The Inheritance / C.I.D. 111
Popular detective series C.I.D. gets into the Limca Book of Records and attempted and entered the Guiness Book of World Records for its record-breaking single shot episode
B.P.Singh's all set to enter the Guiness Book of World Records for canning an 111 minute episode of CID in one single shot. A feat which director B P Singh feels every "Indian should be proud of because no one has achieved this before."
So far, a documentary called Russian Arch which is about a museum has been shot continuously for 88 minutes. This is the first time that anyone on television has attempted such a record-breaking feat. More than a decade ago, in 1987, Singh had shot an episode of his Marathi detective series Ek Shunya Shunya in a single take of 22 minutes.
But it was only two years back that the B.P.Singh approached the Guiness Book of World Records to enter his unusual Ek Shunya Shunya episode. However, he was told that he would have to shoot an episode for over 25 minutes to get into the book. That set him thinking. "Instead of 25 minutes I thought I should go in for a longer shot something which has never been attempted by anyone before not only in India but in the world. I got to know about the 88 minute documentary and decided to beat that." The question was how and when he would be able to achieve the feat.
In the year 2004 CID is entering the seventh year and Singh thought it would be the best time to do something drastic for the detective series to pep it up. The whole of last year was spent in exploring various ways of attempting it. This year he spoke to Tarun Katial, VP, programming and response, Sony, about his innovative idea. To Singh's pleasant surprise, he found that Katial was more than game for it. "B.P.Singh warned him that if I shoot a 120 minute episode in one take it has to be telecast in the same way i.e without commercial breaks," informs Singh. He was delighted when Tarun agreed to go along with his "crazy idea."
That provided the much-needed boost to Singh who didn't wait a minute to achieve his dream. He started scouting for a location that would fulfill his criteria. The bungalow had to be huge because the camera has to capture the entire action happening in different places at one go. His search ended in Lonavala and for six months, Singh along with his technical team visited the place and worked out a script. Since there was no precedence of such an episode, it was challenging to write a script without cuts. "It had to have all the ingredients of suspense, flashback and flashforward. There was no scope for the camera to cut and dissolve and nothing that could be hidden from it," confesses Singh. Sensing the daunting task he had set for himself, the director known for his horror serials, organised a pooja at the location before even narrating the story to his actors. "It augured a good beginning. The fact that everyone was present gave me the confidence that we could do it," smiles the director. Such was the enthusiasm for the record-breaking episode that Raj Zutsi and Kay Kay agreed to be a part of it without even hearing the story, leave alone the role.
Having got his story and cast in place, he decided to shoot in August. At that time helicopters were also a part of the shoot, for which they had obtained the requisite permission. "Unfortunately it rained incessantly for 10 days, as a result of which we had to cancel the shoot. We wouldn't have been able to get the appropriate lighting," laments Singh. The shooting was rescheduled to October and the first 10 days of the month were blocked. This time however, they had to shoot without the choppers because, "the State went to the polls and permission was denied." Sans the helicopters, the cast and crew rehearsed the episode from October 1–6, and finally on the 8th evening they decided to go for the final take. The shooting began at 6.30 pm, in time to capture the "magic hour lighting" which Singh wanted. "We chose 8th because if we goofed we could shoot again the next day." But Singh needn't have worried. Amazingly, everyone got it right in the first go itself. All the actors had perfected their lines and the operative cameraman Nitin Rao was raring to go. Singh, who otherwise captures all the scenes in the lens, had for this special one, decided to hand over the camera to another person, "because it's not possible for me to carry a steadycam weighing 27 kgs for two hours." So, Rao who is one of the busiest cinematogrpahers in the industry was booked two months prior to the shoot.
Titled The Inheritance, this episode is about a hotelier who comes down from South Africa to wind up his business and sort out his inheritance. All his relatives gather at the hotel in the hope of getting a share of his property. A murder takes place amidst them and the owner summons the CID. Just when the CID team thinks it has tracked the killer, two more murders are committed, this time in the presence of the CID thus intensifying the suspense.
This unique episode is to be aired on Sunday, 7 November 2004 at 8:00 pm IST. Shot continuously for 111 minutes, this is a unique attempt and understandably has been given a special slot. Starring in Singh's innovative experiment are Avinash Wadhwan and Krutika Desai among others. Thus B.P.SINGH created a history in television entered the "LIMCA BOOK OF RECORDS" and "GUINESS BOOK OF WORLD RECORDS".
