Reelection of 1892

The sentence "Neither Harrison nor Cleveland actively campaigned during the election—the first time no candidate campaigned in a presidential election," is incorrect. It was the last time, not the first, that no major candidate campaigned. In every Presidential election from 1788 through 1892, no major candidate campaigned, except for Stephen A. Douglas in 1860. William Jennings Bryan started the modern trend of frenetic campaigning in 1896. In 1892, Populist candidate James Weaver campaigned. --Paul F. Boller, Jr. "Presidential Campaigns." (NY: Oxford U.
