"Commander"
Song

"Commander" is a song by American recording artist, Kelly Rowland taken from her self-titled, third studio album. It serves as the project's international lead single as well Rowland's debut release with Universal Motown. Rowland stated that it was the recording of this single which caught the attention of record label boss Sylvia Rhone consequently leading to the new record label. It was written by American songwriter Rico Love and was described as a fun and aggressive club record with themes of female empowerment and deliberate linguistic errors.

French DJ and producer David Guetta produced the single with synthesized dance beats which blend R&B with electronica and house music. "Commander" was debuted at the 2010 Winter Music Conference and received universal praise from contemporary critics who applauded Rowland's decision to reunite with Guetta on another dance song noting that her vocal performance marries his production perfectly. The pair had previously achieved success with a similar dance production, "When Love Takes Over" (2009) which topped charts around the world.

Just over a month after release, "Commander" topped the U.S. Hot Dance Club Chart as well as peaking in the top ten in the UK and top twenty in Ireland whilst still impacting on other charts worldwide. The accompanying music video was directed by Masashi Muto, and portrays Rowland facing herself in various dance-off scenes. The single was promoted with a number of live performances including BBC Radio 1's Live Lounge and The Graham Norton Show. An extended dance mix also produced by Guetta was released alongisde the main single whilst an urban remix with American rapper Nelly was released in the United Kingdom.

Background and context

In 2009 just prior to following Rowland's collaboration with David Guetta on "When Love Takes Over" she announced her departure from Columbia Records which was said to be by mutual agreement.[1] However in an interview with Entertainment Weekly she revealed that the decision to leave was not hers and was more down to the records from the previous album, Ms. Kelly not being commercially successful. Following "When Love Takes Over" she fired Matthew Knowles as her manager.[2] Since then it was suggested that Rowland had fallen out with former fellow Destiny's Child singer Beyoncé Knowles. Much of the media reported that Knowles' decision to release one more video ("Why Don't You Love Me") from her album I Am... Sasha Fierce just before Rowland released "Commander" was unfair on Rowland.[3][4] However the singer insisted that despite the clip for Knowles' new single airing several days before "Commander" was released, the media was "making too much of a big real of release schedules and trying to create a feud where it doesn't exist."[5] She later clarified the matter, saying that "We all came out at the same time and it really doesn't matter... I think there's room for everybody... There's B[eyoncé], there's Ciara putting something out and [Lady] GaGa putting something out, but, because we started out together, people are going to say things like that. But I really don't care, I love her 'til our dying days and that's all that counts."[3]

Composition

Music and lyrics

"Commander" is an electro-house-R&B[6][7] song written by Rico Love. There are deliberate linguistic and grammar issues within the lyrics such as "there's no other who do it like I do it" and "you won't find no lady who does it like I does it". Lyrics were also said to speak of hair, fashion and competition with other women.[8] The production consists of synthesized dance beats[9]provided by David Guetta and is noticeably similar to his productions "Sexy Bitch" and "Boom Boom Pow". However near the end it also bares resemblance to work by hip-hop producer, Timbaland.[7] Rowland would later go on to explain how she wanted the word 'Commander' to be associated with dance instead of the military, "When I command you to dance ... I want you moving, you know? It felt good to have a song that I could express that in."[10]

Themes

Rowland was also quoted by The Daily Star saying of the theme of the song: "I hope to see women singing the song like they're in charge. It's important to know that we are commanders who have the power to shape our own destiny."[11] When speaking to Rap Up magazine the song's writer said "It's just such an aggressive record, it's a club record, it's a worldwide international record. She's stretching her legs out and she's showing her true vocal ability, she's like the queen of the night on this record."[12] During the video shoot of the song Rowland said "I feel like I've finally come into my own," referring to her exploration of a new sound. "With the sound of dance music getting embraced more, I'm very excited, seeing how fans have been responding to the music. Dance music is more of a European thing, but I've been looking on Twitter and seeing fans (in different parts of the country) talking about playing 'Commander'."[13] She said working with Guetta was "amazing" because it "effortless" and she feels a great sense of "chemistry" when working with him.[14] Rowland also felt she was trying something different, "In this generation and this day and time, no one is putting soul in dance music... no pop artist. I thought maybe that was something I could try. And then it works..."[15]

Release

"Commander" was selected as the album's first single. Rowland said "It’s definitely a club banger. You know the first time I heard it, I went bananas. It was a choice out of this song and another track, as to which would be the leading single and without a doubt we had to go with this one, I just fell in love with it..."[14] Then she told Universal Music Group executives at Pat Field's Disco Party in New York that she chose this song because "I know in my gut that it feels good. Nobody could take my thoughts away from that. I don't need anyone else to tell me it's good".[10] Officially sources announced that the song was released on May 17 and May 18 to the iTunes Store in France and the U.S. respectively,[16] whilst Rap Up magazine reported that Guetta's extended dance mix of the song will also released on May 18, 2010.[17] Later announcements from Love and Rowland on Ustream confirmed plans for an urban mix of the song[18] with a slower, smoother sound.[19] It features new vocals from rapper Nelly[19] following a request put forward by him to appear on the song[20] and was released as part of a Remixes EP in the UK.[21] The official press release dated May 19, 2010 from Universal Motown Records announced "Commander" as the 'international lead single', leading to speculation that a different song would be released domestically.[22] It was then revealed that "Shake Them Haters Off", penned by Ne-Yo[23] would be released exclusively for the United States.[24] However these plans were then changed and it was then revealed that on June 29, 2010 two singles will impact in the U.S.[25] "Grown Woman" will be sent to urban/rhythmic radio[26] and "Rose Colored Glasses" for pop radio.[27]

Promotion

After announcing several times that she was working with Guetta again for her own album Rowland debuted "Commander" at Cathy Guetta's Fuck Me I'm Famous party in Miami as part of Winter Music Conference on March 27, 2010.[28] Of the performance she said "I was nervous and anxious, but when I hit the stage I felt the inner 'Commander' come to life!"[29] On May 4, 2010 whilst playing a DJ set at a club in Frankfurt (Germany), Guetta premiered his extended house dance mix of the song.[17] She also performed the song with Guetta as part of a mini-set list at KIIS FM's Wango Tango 2010 festival at Los Angeles' Staples Centre on May 15, 2010.[30] International promotion for the song begun on May 22, 2010 at BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend where she performed "Commander" for the first time live in the United Kingdom.[31] This was followed up on June 15, 2010 with live performance and interview on The Graham Norton Show in the United Kingdom.[32] It continued with a medley performance including "Commander" on May 25, 2010 in Singapore.[33] This was then followed by three more UK performances including GMTV[34] on May 29, 2010[35] and an accoustic performance on BBC Radio 1's Live Lounge[36] as well as a performance on The 5 O'Clock Show,[37] both on July 1, 2010. She also appeared on another BBC radio show, this time Radio 2's Saturday Sessions with Dermot O'Leary.[38]

Critical reception

The song was well received by critics who noted Rowland and Guetta as a winning formula. Robert Copsey of Digital Spy said "...It looks as though they're going to be ruling the airwaves all over again. ... After she lulls us into a false sense of security ("I feel like the DJ is bodyguard / You see the way he keeps me safe? / With the treble and the bass?"), the track plunges into a pounding electro-house chorus that quite literally orders us to the dance floor ... The result isn't quite as fresh and inventive as some of Guetta's recent output - Kelis' 'Acapella', for example - but it goes a long way towards recapturing some of last summer's magic..."[6] The site's other reviewer, Nick Levine, agreed saying that the song "thumps as persuasively as Muhammad Ali circa 1967."[7] Ivan Ibarra of DjBooth.net also agreed saying "The David Guetta-produced jam will definitely have dancers fist-pumping in their favorite ‘‘Jersey Shore’‘ re-enactment. Vocally Kelly delivers a performance that marries Guetta's production perfectly..."[39] Robert Daw of Idolator said "if you think Ms. Kelly is taking the go-go boots off anytime soon, then you'd best go lean against the wall, flower. Rowland's Guetta-produced new single 'Commander' is pure strobe-light adrenaline rush. ... [it] will appear on Kelly's as-yet-untitled third solo album ... we're predicting a full on Rowland Renaissance!".[40] With Alex Catarinella of Paper saying "she belts out soaring vocals, is further proof that she's no longer the cute teenage girl sharing a chorus."[15]

Rebecca Nicholson of The Guardian said that before Guetta's collaborations with Kelis ("Acapella") and Rowland, she felt that "[David Guetta] was ruining R&B by turning all of my favorite ladies into Euro cheesemongers". However "Acapella" changed Nicholson's mind and she said that "'Commander' is further evidence of this".[41] Whilst Fraser McAlpine awarded the song four stars his review was neither positive nor negative. He said "Singers always like to sing about how brilliantly attractive and astonishing (and bossy) they are. Even if the words have a double meaning, which hints that they are merely mouthing the self-regard of a rampant egomaniac, who is laughing and rubbing his hands every time they start to sing, they don't mind. Why would they? The song mentions hair, and being better than the other ladies. That's what singers live for. [I awarded it] one extra star for the stoopid grammar switcheroo ... because of the chorus, which rules."[8] Gavin Martin of The Mirror made similar comments neither praising nor criticizing the song, instead saying it will put her "firmly in control of the dance floor".[42]

Chart performance

On May 18, 2010 on same day of release, "Commander" made its U.S. chart debut on the Hot Dance Club Songs chart at number thirty-six[43] and in the coming weeks rose up the charts before peaking at the top spot where it remained for one week.[44] It also charted in the top ten of the U.S. Hot Dance/Electronic Digital Songs.[45] In the UK the single was not due for full release until June 28, 2010.[46] However the single and dance mixes were released as standalone downloads on May 17, 2010[47][48] and it was added to to urban music radio[49] and the UK's biggest station mainstream station's, BBC Radio 1, C-playlist.[50] Consequently "Commander" debuted on the UK Dance Singles chart at number thirty-four.[51] In the subsequent weeks it was added to the B-playlist on the UK's urban music radio station BBC 1Xtra[52] as well as on BBC Radio 1.[53] This resulted in the song debuting on the UK Singles Chart at number 167.[54]

A week ahead of the release of the remixes EP[55] the song peaked at number two on the UK dance chart.[56] and nine on the official singles chart[57] It made its Irish debut at number twenty-four[58] before peaking at number fifteen.[59] Elsewhere the single had mixed success. It debuted and peaked in Australia on the Singles Chart at number sixty-four[60] though it faired better on the Australia Dance Chart debuting at number sixteen[61] and peaked at number fourteen.[62] In New Zealand the song debuted at number thirty-nine[63] before falling out of the top-forty the following week[64] only to return and peak at number twenty.[65] Currently in Belgium it sits at number three on the Flanders Tip Chart,[66] five on the Wallonia Tip Chart[67] whilst in Sweden it sits at number thirty-seven.[68]

Music video

The video was filmed on May 5, 2010 with Japanese music producer and promo director, Masashi Muto.[69] Muto's previous work includes "I Will Be Here" for Dutch DJ, Tiesto, as well as promo clips for Pepsi and Honda. His work is known for its scale, impact and colorful imagery.[70] Song writer Rico Love and song producer David Guetta make appearances in the video,[71] whilst Fatima Robinson handled the video's choreography.[13] An early version of the video was leaked online on June 1, 2010,[72] which was later addressed by Rowland via her official Twitter account where she made clear that the wrong edit of the video leaked online.[73] UK music channels MTV[74] and MTV Base[75] began playing the early version of the video on June 8, 2010[76] though it was not until June 21, 2010 when the official final version premiered on Rowland's website.[77]

A scene in the video for "Commander" where Rowland "fights" against herself, whilst dressed in two contrasting outfits.[78]

Concept and reception

Rowland revealed to Rap Up TV that the video has a futuristic theme, saying "The concept of the video is very futuristic and great. The red line in the story is that I am above all the lead but in the club atmosphere with cool people. I fight against myself with my haircut, makeup, and dance moves."[78] According to Love in the clip Rowland is transformed into a fashionista; "Kelly's look in this video is just utterly sexy. It's like a jungle feel. I feel like we're in Avatar somewhere, running through the woods, minus the blue paint."[79] Rowland said that for this video "I had to pull out my dancing shoes."[46] Guetta appears towards the end of the clip he "undergoes a 'Transformers'-like metamorphosis, turning into a mixer."[80] Paper magazine described Rowland's look in the video as "superhero-esque".[15]

As of 6 July 2010 the video has received critical acclaim with over two million Vevo views, according to a press release from Rowland's record label.[81] Robbie Daw of Idolator first said it had an "old-school Janet [Jackson] vibe"[82] and later called the video "a colorful, militant dance-off".[83] Laura Brooks of 'TeenToday' felt that the video had no storyline. She said "[It is an opportunity] to show off her lovely hair and her thighs, also features David Guetta who appears to have remembered at several points throughout the video that he’s left his iron on dashes off to remedy the situation."[84] E! Online's Natalie Finn said it takes the themes of the song and "dresses 'em in tight little outfits and turns 'em loose to break hearts and dominate the opposite sex at will."[85] However Alyssa Rosenberg of The Atlantic was critical of the video comparing the dancing of that Matrix Reloaded, "with guys who forgot to wash the home dye out of their hair" thus making the clip "dopey".[86]
