This is a notice to let you know about Article alerts, a fully-automated subscription-based news delivery system designed to notify WikiProjects and Taskforces when articles are entering Articles for deletion, Requests for comment, Peer review and other workflows (full list). The reports are updated on a daily basis, and provide brief summaries of what happened, with relevant links to discussion or results when possible. A certain degree of customization is available; WikiProjects and Taskforces can choose which workflows to include, have individual reports generated for each workflow, have deletion discussion transcluded on the reports, and so on. An example of a customized report can be found here.

If you are already subscribed to Article Alerts, it is now easier to report bugs and request new features. We are also in the process of implementing a "news system", which would let projects know about ongoing discussions on a wikipedia-wide level, and other things of interest. The developers also note that some subscribing WikiProjects and Taskforces use the display=none parameter, but forget to give a link to their alert page. Your alert page should be located at "Wikipedia:PROJECT-OR-TASKFORCE-HOMEPAGE/Article alerts". Questions and feedback should be left at Wikipedia talk:Article alerts.

Yesterday I spent several hours populating a new category for inductees into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame, using the precedent of the Category:Oregon Sports Hall of Fame and others. My work was speedily deleted by a robot acting on a precedent from last February where the same category was deleted with very little discussion. The original nominator makes reference to a guideline, Wikipedia:OCAT#Award recipients, which seems to contradict a great deal of consensus practice by Wikipedia editors. Certainly I believed the work I was doing was valuable to the project. I'm trying to get the latest deletion reversed long enough to re-open discussion. See Wikipedia:Deletion review/Log/2010 May 23#Category:Alabama Sports Hall of Fame. --Dystopos (talk) 17:05, 23 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Template:Alabama portal

FYI, {{Alabama portal}} has been nominated for deletion. 70.29.210.155 (talk) 04:55, 24 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

This is part of an ongoing consolidation of individual portal templates to {{portal}}. --Spyder_Monkey (Talk) 21:59, 24 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
And it has now been replaced by {{portal|Alabama}}. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 01:39, 3 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Mobile County Public School System

Is anyone in the city of Mobile? If so, Mobile County Public School System needs photos of its schools. I want to add the official MCPSS langauge translations of its own name to the MCPSS commons category once it is opened. WhisperToMe (talk) 14:24, 28 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Proposals/Birmingham

FYI, there is an effort to create a WikiProject for the city in England, under the name "WikiProject Birmingham", see Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Proposals/Birmingham. 76.66.193.224 (talk) 01:50, 7 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

We need one photograph and three street addresses.

List of United States federal courthouses in Alabama is complete except for one photograph and date of first use (for the Seybourn H. Lynne U.S. Courthouse & Post Office in Decatur), and three street addresses for former courthouses. bd2412 T 16:54, 1 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I think the Customs House in Mobile was on the site of the current GM Building (Mobile). That address is 107 St. Francis St. SW corner of Royal St. and St. Francis St. Rlm0710 (talk) 14:30, 4 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The dates match up. Thanks! bd2412 T 15:54, 4 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I got a photo of Decatur (and other historic sites in Huntsville and Decatur), and an address for Montgomery (from here). --Spyder_Monkey (Talk) 02:47, 9 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Luke Pryor Entry

The 1860 slave schedule on ancestry.com lists Luke Pryor as owning 24 slaves, not two as stated in the article. Author might want to double-check that figure. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 131.204.181.186 (talk) 19:17, 23 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Photo request: Julia Tutwiler Prison for Women, Wetumpka

For those of you near Wetumpka, Alabama, who wants to photograph the Julia Tutwiler Prison for Women? Just get the front entrance, which is located along the state highway. This copyrighted picture shows what to take along the front entrance - You may not be able to park at the facility, so you may have to have a friend behind the wheel while you photograph the prison from a moving automobile. This Google maps view shows a suggested point of photography of the facility. You can also see where the entrance that needs to be photographed is exactly located. WhisperToMe (talk) 17:55, 6 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yargh! I was just in Wetumpka on Saturday. I'll pop up there again soon. Does anyone know where the old Tutwiler prison is? It's listed on the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage. --Spyder_Monkey (Talk) 02:15, 7 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, Spyder. BTW, I'm not sure where the old Tutwiler is. I'll see if I can consult Google Maps. I know the old facility is in Wetumpka, near the current Tutwiler prison. WhisperToMe (talk) 02:58, 7 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
This map may indicate the current Wetumpka prison. WhisperToMe (talk) 04:05, 7 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Alabama articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release

Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

We would like to ask you to review the Alabama articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. You may wish to look at your WikiProject's articles with cleanup tags and try to improve any that need work; if you do, please give us the new revisionID at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8. We would like to complete this consultation period by midnight UTC on Monday, October 11th.

We have greatly streamlined the process since the Version 0.7 release, so we aim to have the collection ready for distribution by the end of October, 2010. As a result, we are planning to distribute the collection much more widely, while continuing to work with groups such as One Laptop per Child and Wikipedia for Schools to extend the reach of Wikipedia worldwide. Please help us, with your WikiProject's feedback!

A consideration for cross project consolidation of talk page templates

I have started a conversation here about the possibility of combining some of the United States related WikiProject Banners into {{WikiProject United States}}. If you have any comments, questions or suggestions please take a moment and let me know. --Kumioko (talk) 19:40, 27 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Monte Sano Mountain's Name Origin

Monte Sano Mountain's Name Origin: The Alabama Registry of Historical Places states that the name,"Monte Sano", is a Spanish term (not Italian, as this article states). Also, the Registry documents the use of the mountain as a place of healing and recovery for malaria-stricken soldiers upon their return from the Spanish-American War; hence the use of a Spanish, rather than English or Native American, nomenclature.
