Hindupur (Telugu: హిందూపురము,Kannada: ಹಿಂದೂಪುರ) is the second biggest town and Mandal headquarters located in Anantapur district in Andhra Pradesh, India. Hindupur was given its name by a Maratha Chieftain called Murari Rao, who named this town after his father Hindoji Rao, or after a king named Hindurao. The Hindupur Parliamentary Constituency is also a Special grade 1 municipality. The border between Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka state passes through Hindupur and Koratagere taluk in Karnataka.

Demographics

According to The Imperial Gazetteer of India[2], Hindupur was a taluk of Anantapur district in Madras province. There were 74 villages covering an area of 426 square miles. The population in 1901 was 92,088, compared with 80,486 in 1891. Hindupur, the headquarters has a population of 19,575. The Penner River and Chitravati River runs through the taluk.

As of 2001 India census,[3] Hindupur had a population of 125,056. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Hindupur has an average literacy rate of 62%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 69%, and female literacy is 55%.

Civic issues

Hindupur is prone to intense heat during the summer and ground water reserves in this area are scarce. This region is prone to droughts during summer. Hospitals and emergency facilities are largely inadequate at best and many people are infected by diseases like cholera, diarrhea in summer and Chikungunya, malaria and dengue fever in winter[citation needed].Hindupur has a Vibrant Muslim Population.

Hindupur's future expansion is severely restricted due to the scarcity of water. It is not uncommon to see people buying water at premium prices(Lately around 2 rupeees / bucket),usually through private "Tankers". These tankers basically pump out water using powerful borewells, essentially depleting ground water reserves[citation needed]. Recently[when?] water cans which are purified in local water purifying plants are the drinking source and ground water is high in fluoride content which is also highly salty in mature, makes almost impossible to drink bore-well water.
