The Romsey Academy is a mixed community academy in Romsey, Hampshire, England. The school was a secondary modern, called Romsey County Secondary School[1], until the 1970s when it became a comprehensive. It is often nicknamed "Priestlands" after its location. In 2000 it became a Specialist Language College jointly with The Mountbatten School[2]. In 2005 the school's specialisation changed to a Mathematics and Computing College.[3] The school has approximately 1100 children aged 11-16 and 100 teachers and the catchment area includes the villages of Ampfield, Braishfield, Sherfield English, Michelmersh, Timsbury and Awbridge.In August 2011 the School became an academy following a decision reached by the Governors. In 2010 81% of pupils achieved 5 or more A*-C grades in their GCSEs. 94% of pupils achieved at least a pass on A*-C.
The School currently operates a House system In which the four houses are named after the 8 Tutor group types, A,B,M,P,R,S,T,W.
ASD Support Base
The School runs an ASD Support Base designed to support pupils in lessons who find it difficult because of Special needs. The Base was started in 2002 for pupils with an austistic spectrum disorder and is directly managed by 2 teachers and 9 support staff[4].
Academy status approval
The Romsey school will become an Academy on 1st August, Following a decision by the Governors at the End of June 2011. The Romsey School governors and Senior Leadership team decided that there was a huge financial advantage in becoming an academy and that it would strongly benefit the school and it's students.
Awards
The school won the inaugural 'Community School of the Year' People's Service award from Children & Young People Now magazine in 2006[5][6], and the following year was shortlisted for the publication's 'Extended School' award.[7]
