Request to repost article - Dark Motif

Dear JohnCD,

After reading the "Why your post was deleted" article you published, and thoroughly going over the rules for posting new articles (specifically section A7), I still can not understand why the article I posted was deleted. It does not seem to me like it falls in the A7 criteria.

As I mentioned in the talk page, I would be more than happy to edit the article to comply with the rules for posting new articles, but why the material posted did not comply with those rules is still unclear to me. I read and re-read the related posts and articles but still can not see what part of article A7 I am in violation of.

I can give links to many sites who referred to the studio in their news in order to establish that the studio did receive attention from the press. I did not post any of these links in the article itself as according to the guidelines one should not place news links in articles. Would that make a difference?

Thank you for your attention and consideration.

Sincerely yours, Afarshezif

Afarshezif (talk) 07:01, 11 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

In assessing it against WP:CSD#A7 I looked for a "credible claim of significance or importance", but all the article said was that the company was a video game developer which is working on a game, plus a bit about aims etc - nothing about any actual achievements. There must be hundreds, if not thousands, of companies like that, and Wikipedia is not a business listing directory (though Wikicompany is).
Although a credible claim of importance is enough to pass A7, if an article is to be kept it needs to establish WP:Notability, which is not a matter of opinion but has to be demonstrated by showing "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject." Significant means more than just listing-type mentions; reliable excludes Myspace, Facebook, blogs, places where anyone can post anything; independent excludes the subject's own website, affiliated ones and anything based on press releases. The test is, have people unconnected with the subject thought it important and significant enough to write substantial comment about?
Think hard about whether Dark Motif can pass that test, because if not you will be wasting your time. Read WP:Notability (organizations and companies) and the WP:FAQ/Organizations. Then, if you want to go ahead, reply below here and I will userfy the article for you - undelete it into your user space where you can develop it. JohnCD (talk) 11:48, 11 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Dear JohnCD,

Thank you for your detailed explanation, I now better understand the reasons behind the deletion of the article. Nevertheless, I did some research during the past week and , with your permission, I would like to make one last attempt to establish a claim for this article.

You see, I believe this studio and the product that they are working on (Adam Syndrome) deserve a place on Wikipedia even if only because of the innovation they propose to the specific genre of games they belong to. I can't call myself a real fan but I consider myself an avid follower of the genre and I can tell you that this studio has picked the interest of many gamers out there as is evident in many forum discussions and in quite a few languages. In addition, they also picked the attention of genre-specific press, who have been following their progress for a few years now and are reporting to their readers. A quick search of mine yielded many such reports, of which I'm showing you only a short arbitrary assortment in various languages, demonstrating coverage on genre press around the world:

If you still insist that this studio does not deserve any mentioning at all on Wikipedia, I'll accept your opinion and let it rest, but as a gamer I truly believe that this very interesting studio should indeed get mentioned on Wikipedia simply because many people do find them very interesting.

Sincerely yours, Afarshezif Afarshezif (talk) 07:22, 22 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I am about to go away for two days and have not time to look at all those, but that looks much more promising. I have "userfied" the article for you to User:Afarshezif/Dark Motif where you can develop it. Say why it is important or significant, with links to the references. JohnCD (talk) 09:17, 22 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Dear JohnCD,

Thank you so much for considering my request. However, I found it hard to follow your advice and say why Dark Motif is important or significant, simply because it would seem like I'm glorifying or advertizing the studio, which is neither the case nor acceptable on Wikipedia. You see, I'm not a very good writer myself, so my sole intention was to plant the seed and let other (more qualified) people add to it - like a stub, if you may.

As for links to references, I believe that when more beefy facts will start finding their way into this article in the future, the links to references will start to add up as well. At the current state of the article, it seem to me that there is too little on it to start adding links to references. I looked at many other similar studios before creating this article, and since they have very short articles as well, no references are used there either. Here are two random examples but there are many, many more: like http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P%C3%A9ndulo_Studios,_S.L. and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autumn_Moon_Entertainment.

Anyway, thank you again and I hope it is enough.

Sincerely yours, Afarshezif Afarshezif (talk) 08:37, 25 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Each of those articles links to notable games the company has produced, which themselves have more substantial articles. (Also, because the quality of the existing 3,500,000 articles is regrettably uneven, and our standards are probably rising, the argument "but those other articles are just as bad" is not generally given much weight).
What is needed is not promotional language, but a completion of the sentence "This is not just another videogame company, it is important and significant because... " backed up by independent sources. Has the company actually produced any product yet? If not, maybe an article should wait until they have, and their output has received critical attention. That was embarrassing, I meant to paste that into the talk page of a redirect I just created, but still had this open tab (I have been going over the user accounts of the sock, putting the templates up etc). Thank you for the quick CSD, which in spite of the name, are not always speedy.--Cerejota (talk) 11:05, 17 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

No worries, and you used a nice accurate G7 tag which meant I could zap it straight away without having to make enquiries. Speediness depends how many admins are working CAT:CSD which sometimes has 150 entries or more. That account has been unblocked because the master account was soft-username-blocked with a block notice that includes "you are welcome to create a new account with a username that represents only you"; I would personally have left a week's block as a mark of disapproval of the rather egregious socking, but I will leave him a note to explain. JohnCD (talk) 11:17, 17 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah this was not a hundred-socks-4-ever case, but it wasn't pretty either. But like with Spider Ledesma (oh, what a beauty!), makes me wonder if there are people impersonating the actual people and being nasty on purpose to descredit the people they purport to be...--Cerejota (talk) 11:28, 17 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thank You for Your Help

I am grateful for you coming to my rescue JohnCD. I feel like a newbie in a mental mosch pit...

Your help has brought me back into the fold. I felt like I was being bullied, and got flamed on my first attempt at editing. All biographies are self-promoting, yet I was faulted for that.

I am becoming more "notable" as the music emerges. A web search will show my "presence".

Please reply where I can send you a promo CD if you would like some eclectic Americana music.

The songs are also available at http://www.arthurdavenport.com

With Very Best Regards,

Thank you, but all I have done is point out that your piece is no longer a copyright violation. The deletion discussion has still to decide whether you meet Wikipedia's quite demanding inclusion criteria explained at WP:MUSICBIO, and you should read Wikipedia:Autobiography and Wikipedia:Conflict of interest to understand the reasons why writing about oneself in Wikipedia is strongly discouraged. Christian-New Age Dialogue

Hi John,

I'm not sure I correctly understand the response to my request to restore the article "Christian-New Age dialogue" to my userspace. But I'm thinking the request was denied. If so, I'm asking you to reconsider. I certainly understand all the comments you made about the piece. Although I'm not sure I agree with them all, I respect them all and thank you for your explanation of Wikipedia's purpose. John, I'm still stunned and reeling from all of this. And I'd like the piece restored to my userspace until I can decide quite what to do with it. I'm thinking perhaps it would be more appropriate for one of those Wiki offshoot areas that are not part of the encyclopedia. But I'm, as I say, stunned at the moment and need time to decide. In the meantime, I'd like to have access to the piece. One question that has been on my mind and it's a very important one: Is the topic of "Christian-New Age dialogue" something you see as inappropriate to the encyclopedia? Thank you for the time you're taking here. ````Christian-New Age Dialogue — Preceding unsigned comment added by Christian-New Age Dialogue (talkcontribs) 18:45, 21 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

No, your request was not denied. I am sorry if my second paragraph was so discouraging that you missed the first, which started with  Done, and gave a link to where I have put the article in your userspace at User:Christian-New Age Dialogue/Christian-New Age dialogue.
As regards the topic, it is not in itself inappropriate, but an encyclopedia does not initiate anything or cover speculation, so an article would only be acceptable if such dialogue had actually been taking place, and had been the subject of sufficient comment in reliable sources (not blogs and the like) for an article to be made by summarising them. The policy WP:No original research is absolutely fundamental to the encyclopedia, and includes the prohibition of "synthesis": "Do not combine material from multiple sources to reach or imply a conclusion not explicitly stated by any of the sources." An article which cites references about Christianity and about New Age beliefs to try to start a discussion about dialogue between them is not encyclopedic.
For other places to post it, you might get ideas from WP:Alternative outlets. A possibility could be Wikiversity - I know little about it, but I understand it is less structured and does not object, as we do, to original research.

A barnstar for you!

The Original Barnstar
Thanks for the help on my talk question :)

Can you also tell me how exactly this translation thing works? I mean if we put that Template:Translated page .... in the talk, would the section mentioned be translated automatically? Or do we need to do it by ourselves and just post this for credit attribution only - if this is the case, won't there be many pages which are translations but don't have this template? Wraith1097 (talk) 05:20, 23 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the barnstar! No, I'm afraid nothing happens automatically - everyone is a volunteer, nobody has to do anything, and work like writing or translating an article only gets done when someone has the time and interest to do it. The {{translated page}} template is only a convenient way of providing attribution. There is a procedure described at WP:Translation for requesting, or rather suggesting translation of an article from another Wikipedia; if, for instance, the Spanish Wikipedia's article on a given subject is better or fuller than the English one, the template {{Expand Spanish}} could be placed on the English article; but that is no more than a suggestion for anyone interested in improving the article. If there is no existing English article, WP:Translate suggests writing a basic stub article and tagging it with the Expand tag.
Yes, there probably are many pages that are translations but don't have this tag. Trying to prevent this is the reason for WP:CSD#A2: if a page in a foreign language is posted here, it may be listed at WP:Pages needing translation to see if someone is able and willing to translate it; but if it is a copy of an article on another WP it is speedily deleted to avoid losing attribution, and the person who posted it is pointed to WP:Translation. Christian-New Age Dialogue with wee problem

Hi John,

I thank you very much for your response re the whereabouts of the "Christian-New Age Dialogue" article. I found your response very informative and helpful -- especially your clarification re no original research. I also stumbled on the reason I thought my request for restoration was denied. I now have found the article (and monkeyed with it some) at User:Christian-New Age dialogue/Christian-New Age dialogue. But that's not my user name! No wonder I couldn't find it. My user name is "Christian-New Age Dialogue" with a capital "D." The article is "Christian-New Age dialogue" with a lower case "d." Would you kindly move it so that I can access it on my own userspace?

Why'd you delete User:Porchcorpter?

I noticed you deleted User:Porchcorpter; however, you did not give a reason. I would assume the only valid reason would be G7, except I can't find a spot where Porchcorpter requested deletion of his user page. Again the only reasoning could be that he placed a G7 template on his user page, in which case I could not know; however, a reasoning was still not placed along with the deletion. Ryan Vesey Review me! 12:31, 26 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Porchcorpter himself requested deletion by putting {{db-userreq}} on the page. The deletion system supplies a drop-down menu to specify the reason, which is usually filled in automatically if the page has a speedy tag on it. I don't know why that didn't happen this time; with U1 deletions I go to the history to make sure the tag was really placed by the account owner, and possibly I clicked "delete" while still on the history without going back to the page, and didn't notice that the reason slot was not filled in. No, it's not an A3 because it does tell you something; and as an over-the air channel not an internet one, it doesn't come under A7. I suggest "unreferenced" and "notability" tags and see if it improves or, if you search and can't find any sources, consider AfD. JohnCD (talk) 12:51, 27 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Okay I found this page here: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Jessica_judd&redirect=no&rcid=460248210

It sounds like a real person and that it might qualify, but it also seems like it needs some sort of note on it.

Thanks.

Wgolf (talk) 18:10, 27 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It's certainly a mess, but as you say it's a real person and there is enough assertion of importance to pass A7, so you were right not to speedy-tag it, though I don't know enough about athletics standards to know if it would pass AfD as notable. Someone else has moved it to Jessica Judd and added maintenance templates, so you can see what they have used. JohnCD (talk) 20:20, 27 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Deleting 926 Mainstreet Apt 2.

Hello,

I see you deleted the page I created for 926 Main Street Apt. 2. I do not understand why, as the band featured two members of the group Harry and the Potters which has an extensive wikipedia to document their history. I linked between the two pages to indicate the connection of members.

Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bunnyfoofoowiki (talkcontribs) 20:21, 27 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Notability doesn't stretch like that - they may be in one notable band, but that doesn't mean that another one they start is automatically notable. Has this band achieved anything to meet WP:BAND? If so, reply below here, and I will userfy it for you - move it into your user space - so that you can work on it to explain and add references. JohnCD (talk) 20:34, 27 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

John, many thanks for the message on my talk page. I was aware it was a borderline CSD, but I was erring a bit on the side of IAR since its such an obviously unsuitable article.
