The cast of the sixth season of Weeds. Left to right: Alexander Gould, Hunter Parrish, Mary-Louise Parker, Kevin Nealon and Justin Kirk.

The American comedy-drama television series Weeds was created by Jenji Kohan and airs on premium cable channel Showtime. Mary-Louise Parker stars as Nancy Botwin, a suburban widow who begins selling marijuana to support her family. Elizabeth Perkins also starred as Nancy's neighbor, Celia Hodes, a demanding PTA mother, but Perkins departed the series at the end of the fifth season.[1] The show follows a serialized format and details Nancy's progressively deeper involvement in illegal activity as she takes care of her family.

The ten-episode first season premiered on August 5, 2005 and concluded on October 10. Season two, which comprises 12 episodes, began airing on August 14, 2006 and finished its run on October 30. The series' third season received an order of 15 episodes, premiered on August 13, 2007 and ran until November 19. The 13-episode fourth season premiered early the following summer on June 16, 2008 and concluded on September 15. Seasons one, two and three have been released on DVD and Blu-ray Disc formats in Regions 1, 2 and 4. At the 2008 Television Critics Association, it was announced that Weeds had been picked up for fifth and sixth seasons of 13 episodes each. As of 2010 Showtime has renewed Weeds for a seventh season with 13 episodes which premiered June 27, 2011.[2]

There have been conflicting reports over the potential for an eighth season of Weeds.[3] At the completion of the sixth season, Jenji Kohan remarked that, “In my mind, it is [the last season]. Everyone’s contract is up next year, [including] the actors and mine. Seven years is a good run, and I’d rather leave while on top.”[4] However, halfway through the seventh season run, Showtime Entertainment president David Nevins remarked that he is “optimistic” that the show will be renewed. Kohan also expressed hope that the show would be renewed.[3] Regardless of renewal, the seventh season finale was crafted to “stand up on its own as a series finale if it has to or be a prelude to an eighth season.”[5]

As of September 12, 2011, 87 episodes of Weeds have aired.

Weeds has steadily gained live viewers from season to season. The first season premiered to 540,000 viewers[6] and averaged 380,000 viewers[7] to become Showtime's highest-rated original series in 2005.[8] Season two averaged 160,000 more viewers than season one[7] after 570,000 viewers tuned in to the premiere;[9] the finale received 626,000 viewers.[10] The third season's debut was watched live by 824,000 viewers[11] and the finale by 737,000[12] such that viewership was up 19% from the second season.[13] Season four premiered to 1.3 million live viewers in its first airing to become what was at the time "Showtime's most-watched single original telecast in at least four years."[9] The first airing of the finale was watched by 1 million viewers[12] and multiple airings of episodes throughout the week after their initial broadcasts averaged 2.72 million viewers—16% more than the third.[14]

The Newmans begin to settle into their new life, as Nancy makes a deal with the hotel concierge to supply hash to guests and Shane makes nice with a group of mothers at the park, although they quickly become suspicious of him. Silas becomes interested in college, and college girls in particular. After being interrogated by Cesar and Ignacio, Doug unwittingly leads them to a homeless man who found Andy's old cell phone. Ignacio accidentally kills the homeless man, and Doug must help Cesar dispose of the body. Andy is promoted to sous-chef, and he reluctantly supplies Nancy with used cooking oil, who uses it to barter for weed with a hippie grandmother and her daughter. On their way back from the trade, Nancy and Andy are confronted by cops.

Having had her van booted by the cops and, fearing the authorities will eventually track them down through the registration, Nancy decides to leave Seattle behind. Andy confronts her about the feelings that exist between the two of them, and she "releases" him from the hope of anything ever happening between them. Silas is devastated about having to leave a normal life behind and Shane manages to bluff his way out of a tough situation with the mommy group. Cesar and Ignacio, with Doug in tow, manage to track the Botwins to their motel and take Shane hostage, while the mommy group calls in child services to take Stevie. Latrice, Nancy's rival at the hotel, and her boyfriend, Quentin, discover her scheme and decide to get even for being left out.

Nancy manages to dodge the situation with Latrice and child services, while Cesar suggests a trade off: Stevie for Shane. Ignacio takes Shane and Doug to wait in a diner, where Silas and Andy have coincidentally decided to wait for Nancy to return from the negotiations. Silas and Andy are soon discovered, while Nancy shoots Cesar in the leg with a crossbow and takes his gun. Nancy goes to the diner, where she winds up in a Mexican stand-off with Ignacio, negotiating the freedom of her family. Ignacio is sure she won't shoot him, until Shane takes the gun from her and Ignacio, acquainted with Shane's dark side, lets them go. The Botwins, reunited with Doug, find themselves on the run once again.

The Botwins and Doug have made it to Montana and Nancy decides to take a break from running and treat the family to an afternoon at a local carnival. Andy and Silas enter themselves in a butter sculpture contest to win a luxury class RV unaware that, rather than making a sculpture out of butter, they must eat a butter sculpture. New connections are formed among the family; Silas and Andy bond over a joint, Shane makes Nancy see the similarities between them and Doug bonds with Stevie. Silas wins the contest, but must leave the RV behind in order to remain anonymous.

After buying an RV that was once owned by a pastor, the Botwins settle in a small, off the grid town. Nancy's growing frustration about their new lifestyle leads her to an out of the way bar, where she gets drunk and has rough sex with the owner, Jack (Mark Paul Gosselaar). Andy and Doug soon make a reputation in the town when they pass themselves off as pastors, and Shane sets them up with a series of appointments to make money. The next day, Jack's wife shows up and tries to attack Nancy, while Andy and Doug are exposed as frauds and the townspeople drive the Botwins back onto the road.

Traveling through Colorado, Nancy notices that Stevie's stool has turned green and insists on taking him to see a pediatrician. While peddling hash to parents at a children's concert, Silas tries to teach Shane a lesson about responsibility by making Shane think he had lost the hash money and Doug bonds with some of the performers. The doctor's diagnosis for Stevie's condition is not serious, but it begins to make Nancy fear the effect their lifestyle may be having on Stevie, prompting her to make a radical decision: pull off one giant hash sale and move the family to Copenhagen.

Nancy returns to her hometown of Dearborn, Michigan and calls upon her old high school teacher Warren Schiff (with whom she also had an affair) to help hide her family while they secure fake passports. Warren feeds Silas' curiosity about his teen-aged mother and, after learning about her high school boyfriend, starts to doubt that Judah was his real father. Andy has no luck acquiring passports but manages to trade the RV with a family who was living out of their car. Nancy meets a guy, Ellis, who claims he went to high school a few years behind her. To help move the hash, Andy mixes it with alcohol, Red Bull and Ritalin to create a new drug, testing it on Doug with great success. Silas and Shane take a trip to visit Silas' possible biological father, and Shane swipes his hair brush to do a DNA test. Ellis is revealed to have been tracking the Botwins, and makes a phone call to an unknown person to say that he has found them.

Hooman Jaka (Assaf Cohen) fixes Nancy up with a man who can get fake passports, and sends Andy to make the deal with a man named Daoud Mahmud who in turn, asks Andy to kill Hooman as payment. Silas bonds with Lars, his suspected biological father while Nancy's suspicions are raised about Ellis Tate by Warren, leading her to search through old yearbooks where she discovers Ellis is not who he says he is. She confronts him and he reveals himself to be Vaughn Coleman, an investigative journalist who has been tracking her since she left San Diego who plans to write a story about her life. He offers to help expose "the bad guys" before they find her first, and Nancy agrees to go on record about her life. Andy tells Hooman about Mahmud's offer, and the two decide to help each other.

Andy fakes Hooman's death to trick Mahmud into supplying the passports, but the ruse is unsuccessful and Andy must barter with Mahmud's wife for the passports. A paternity test proves that Lars is Silas's real father, and he decides to stay behind instead of going to Copenhagen. Nancy is interviewed by Vaughn about her life, in return for the money needed to get the family out of the country. She returns the next morning to discover his hotel room has been ransacked, and she is ambushed by Guillermo Garcia Gomez and Esteban, who have somehow tracked her down.

Andy, Doug, Shane, and Silas arrive in New York City and visit Nancy at the halfway house. Seeing them at the house takes Nancy by surprise and prompts her to sneak out through the back door. Andy and Shane stay at the house to wait for Nancy; Ed tells them that Nancy likely changed for the worse while in prison. Doug visits an old college friend who invites him to a job interview. Silas convinces a modeling agent to sign him on as a client. After failing a job interview, Nancy visits Zoya's brother. He agrees to sell her one pound of marijuana for the cache of explosives and lures her into smoking marijuana. Upon returning to the house, Nancy talks to Andy and Shane and confesses having smoked. Overhearing that, Ed drags her to his office for a drug test.

After testing positive for marijuana use, Ed arranges for Nancy to start anti-drug classes run by Ms. Keen. “You need a job, to accrue savings, establish a residence, and show family support” to leave the halfway house. Jill tells Nancy that she intends to seek full custody of Stevie. At Nancy’s urging Shane obtains admission to City College of New York. Doug gets a job as a CPA from his college friend. Silas gets his first gig as an underwear model in New York City, but he storms out in an angry fit after he almost suffocates. Andy, who saved Silas’s life, lands a date with the shoot’s producer. Nancy trades Zoya’s weapons for pot from the Sarge and discovers an opening in the sales market. When Silas discovers that Nancy is dealing again, he manipulates her to obtain a cut in her action.

As Jill pressures Nancy for custody of Stevie and tuition for an expensive school, Nancy obtains the pro bono help of lawyer Steward Havens. Andy starts a casual relationship with Maxeen; she is in a polyamorous marriage with her husband Charles who is dying of cancer. Shane uses some of his student loan money to build a nice bedroom in their apartment for his mother as a thank you for going to prison for him. After ending his modeling career, Silas revels in his new, equal partnership with his mother. “We have a new relationship where she treats us like real people.” While Nancy shuts down a rival pot dealer, Silas gives away all of Nancy’s pot in free samples to build a client base. Needing to sell the product, they both borrow $1,000 from Shane to buy more; unfortunately, an incident in Afghanistan involving a defiled niqab disrupts the Sarge’s marijuana supply chain. Doug starts steroids to prepare for corporate softball and hires Nancy as an assistant. The CEO makes a romantic move on Nancy, but he pulls back after she outs the firm’s pot dealer.

Doug discovers irregularities in the bookkeeping at his new company; Tillerman encourages him to overlook them. After saving Charles from a hypoglycemic attack, Andy breaks off his relationship with Maxeen. Nancy and Silas fly to California for a custody hearing. As a legal tactic, Jill’s lawyer postpones the hearing for two months. This infuriates Nancy as intended, and she storms to Jill’s house and makes a scene. Thanks to Silas, Nancy receives an unofficial audience with the family court judge. He encourages her to “return to those who helped you succeed... Be the Nancy who raised Silas.” To that end, she visits Heylia James, who is not happy to see Nancy again.

Nancy and Silas ask Heylia to supply them with pot; as a reply, she shoots a gun at them. Dean is living with Heylia in exchange for legal advice, but Conrad has left her to live with his girlfriend. Heylia blames Nancy for her loneliness. “I had a full dinner table before you showed up.” Heylia incites Silas to confront his mother about Lars. After Silas reminds Heylia he helped Conrad improve the MILF strain, Heylia agrees to supply Nancy. However, Silas will live with Heylia and help grow the crops. After Doug’s company refuses to give Andy start-up money, Shane gives him $80,000 so Andy’s business can serve as a front for Nancy’s operation. While taking classes in applied criminology, Shane impresses an adjunct professor and NYPD investigator with his observational skills. Silas returns to New York with 30 pounds of MILF weed. He spars with Nancy over the marijuana selling business. Silas has plans for a large and elaborate messenger structure that insulates the Botwins from their sales force; Nancy, who needs to make money quickly, pushes for a smaller and more direct approach. Silas turns to the female modeling agent (7x02) for messengers to sell MILF weed. Andy resents that Nancy is trying to use his bike shop as a cover business. Shane’s professor tries to teach Shane about moral gray areas but discovers Shane already knows about them. He hires Shane as an intern. Doug is suffering the side-effects of anabolic steroids including "roid rage." Agents from the Securities and Exchange Commission make Nancy an offer. The SEC will help her complete her sentence early in exchange for becoming an informant against Clive. Zoya is out of prison and catches Nancy making out with her brother.

Zoya confronts Nancy after discovering her affair with the Sarge. Nancy reaffirms her commitment to Zoya but continues her affair. Zoya prevents Nancy from taking her delivery of drugs from the Sarge. After the SEC saves Nancy from returning to prison, she must commit to being their informant. Unfortunately, her boss at the SEC is unimpressed with the results she delivers. She agrees to wear a wire while on a date with Clive, but he declares, “No. Work. Talk. Please.” As Andy’s business grows, he and Silas spar over their separate businesses. Denny and Emma give Silas a shakedown warning. Emma expresses a romantic interest in Silas. When Clive and Nancy visit the Botwins’ flat, Demetri brings a large cache of pot. The ensuing conversation about the load of bud is recorded by the SEC. Seconds later, Zoya arrives and introduces herself as Nancy’s business partner and “the love of her life.” Shane and Detective Ouellette stakeout the detective’s step-son. They then talk about their respective families at a bar over drinks.

Nancy tells Clive that the SEC is investigating him. Before Clive flees, he gives Nancy the keys to his townhouse. During a shakedown meeting with her SEC handler, Doug arrives and informs him that the solvency of the government’s pension plan is dependent upon Vehement’s success. Doug and Nancy are released. When Andy tells Zoya that Nancy slept with Clive, Zoya runs off. Nancy, wanting Zoya to leave, burns down Clive's townhouse. (Zoya is a known arsonist and threatened to incinerate him on the wiretap.) Afterwards, Nancy tells Zoya that she will be a prime suspect for the arson and sends Zoya to Burlington. (It’s a lie; the SEC gave Nancy the evidence linking Zoya to the fire.) Shane offers to be Nancy’s man inside the NYPD; “I can protect you.” She turns him down. Shane steals intelligence on Pouncy House and delivers it to Nancy. The intelligence provides her “an insane competitive advantage," but Nancy ignores it and does not appreciate it. When Ouellette discovers the theft, he arrests Shane. After telling Emma that he is not shutting down his operation, Silas takes her to breakfast. When she expresses dissatisfaction with working for Denny, Silas offers her a job and gives her a tour of his facility. Silas reads the NYPD file on Pouncy House and discovers that Emma actually runs the operation. He then discovers that his office has been raided and that Andy’s office has been turned up-side-down, literally.

Andy and Nancy grill Silas who gave Emma access to the back office. When Nancy refuses a delivery from The Sarge, he threatens to muscle out Pouncy House. When Silas goes to Columbia to confront Emma, Andy takes her hostage with a nail gun. All three return to the bike shop. Andy demands that Emma clean-up the bike shop but leaves to allow Silas to guard her. Nancy visits Shane in jail: “I did three years so that you wouldn’t have to. I just want you in college.” Shane replies, “Save that dream for Stevie.” In the end, two deals are reached. Emma and Silas agree to a merger. He will supply the weed; she will run sales and distribution. Nancy will help Ouellette bust Pouncy House in exchange for Shane’s freedom. Jolene Wait of the SEC arrives at Vehement to investigate the government’s pension plan. She inadvertantly learns from Doug and Tillerman that Clive disappeared with a large amount of cash. Also, Clive was the operation’s “money guy.” Without him, the scheme would quickly collapse.
