Woqooyi Galbeed, also known as Maroodi Jeex, is an administrative region (gobolka) in northwestern Somalia.[1] It lies in the territory of Somaliland, a self-declared republic that is internationally recognized as an autonomous region of Somalia.

Overview

Woqooyi Galbeed is bordered by Ethiopia to the south, the Somalian regions of Awdal, Sanaag and Togdheer, and the Gulf of Aden. The highest point in the region is Mount Buuraha Wagar (2004 meters), which rises southeast of Berbera. Its capital is Hargeisa.

The Woqooyi Galbeed region consists of the following districts:[2]

Woqooyi Galbeed was later renamed Maroodi Jeex by the Somaliland regional administration, which also divided the province to create three other sub-regions: Gabiley, Gaaroodi and Hawd.
