The 96th Indianapolis 500 is scheduled to be run on Sunday May 27, 2012 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.[1] It will be the premier event of the 2012 IZOD IndyCar Series season.

For the first time since 1996 all entries will feature turbocharged engines,[2][3] and all entries will be brand new model-year chassis,[4] as part of the ICONIC Project. This will be the time since 2003, and only the fourth time since 1985, that all cars will be new model-year chassis.

Background and news

For the first time since 1947, the defending champion will be unable to defend his crown due to fatality. The 2011 winner Dan Wheldon[5] was killed in a crash during the 2011 season finale the IZOD IndyCar World Championships. Several winners have missed the following year due to either retirements or racing in a different series. The last time the defending champion did not participate in the race due to injury was 2004 winner Buddy Rice, who suffered a concussion during practice, and sat out the 2005 race.

Broadcasting

Time trials and Carb Day will be covered live in the United States on NBC Sports Network.[6] The 2012 Indy 500 (race day) will be broadcast live in high definition in the United States on ABC.[6]

The IMS Radio Network will broadcast the race live on approximately 400 affiliates, as well as AFN, the LeSEA broadcasting network, and World Harvest Radio. The broadcast will be carried on XM channel 145 and on Sirius channel 212 through the "Best of XM" package.
