- Commons only has two images of this large species including your new photograph, which is a welcome addition. If the article was a bit longer, your image should be shown in the article as well, but the article is only a Stub and it does not have much room for extra images. I have added a signpost template at the bottom of the Stub to commons, so that both images can be easily assessed. I have searched Flickr and Picasa Web Albums using several different search terms without finding any more Commons friendly photographs of this species so far.Snowman (talk) 08:34, 12 July 2011 (UTC)

Pop up blind
Hi JJ, Just wondering where you purchased this from: http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Pop_Up_Blind_with_Camera.jpg Cheers, --58.175.33.226 (talk) 11:58, 24 July 2011 (UTC)
- From this guy. The design isn't perfect (I wish the window would open a little lower and it was lighter), but it is fairly well constructed etc. JJ Harrison (talk) 22:08, 24 July 2011 (UTC)
- Cool thanks; and how effective do you find the blind is? Do you combine it with recorded bird calls? --58.175.33.226 (talk) 00:42, 25 July 2011 (UTC)
- Very effective. Provided you set it up when the subjects don't see you, then they will come very close. Recorded bird calls are only really going to work for territorial species (some honeyeaters for example), I rarely make use of them. Some observation can often suggest good spots. Geolocating your IP address suggests you are in Canberra or Queanbeyan, if this is true, then given how dry much of the bush is, setting up near a waterhole or other source of fresh water might be your best bet for bush birds. JJ Harrison (talk) 09:57, 25 July 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks for the advice! Few more questions: I know this will depend on many factors, but how long do you need to sit and wait in the hide before anything interesting comes along? Are we talking 30 mins, 2 hrs, 1/2 day? In terms of choosing a spot, what other things do you look for? You mention it's important for the bird not to see you set it up, so I'm guessing it would be futile to spot the bird go to where it was (before it flew off upon seeing you) and then set up there and wait? Also is it necessary to have the hide semi-"submerged" in surrounding bush or can you just have it more or less in the open? --58.175.33.226 (talk) 00:34, 27 July 2011 (UTC)
- I meant that if you set it up whilst the birds are close, then the noise and so on will probably flush them. It probably doesn't matter for many birds if they see you put it up from some distance away. The kingfisher above would have seen me put it up from about 25 meters away. Scaring the birds off to plonk down a hide is unlikely to be a successful strategy (you'd probably have to wait longer if they come back at all), you are better off making observations, then putting it down strategically when there is a gap in the action. Some birds, like robins or kingfishers often have favorite perches, setting up at one of those when they go elsewhere is probably a reasonable bet. Flowering plants, such as Grevillias, Banksias or Hakeas are often a good bet for Honeyeaters and lorikeets. The waiting time varies hugely, the kingfisher was maybe 1.5 hours to get that shot, but I spent about 2.5 in the hide. I had to wait about an hour for File:Rhyacornis fuliginosus - Doi Inthanon.jpg, whilst other times action can occur within minutes. If you pick good spots you shouldn't have to wait too long. JJ Harrison (talk) 06:54, 27 July 2011 (UTC)

Spot on sun
Hi JJ, I took a sunset picture some time ago and what I noticed while shooting was that there was what appeared to be a dark spot on the sun. Image, check note on commons. I am sure it's not camera dust and the spot appears in different pictures in the exact same position. I didn't know whom to ask so if you have any idea... --Muhammad(talk) 15:30, 5 September 2011 (UTC)
- Looks to be the right size for a Sunspot to me. Intense magnetic fields inhibit convection, creating slightly cooler spots which are darker since the sun is a Black body radiator. We are headed towards a Solar maximum in 2013 which will coincide with increased sunspot activity and more auroras. JJ Harrison (talk) 22:04, 5 September 2011 (UTC)
- I though it might be a sunspot but was really not expecting to see one so easily. Thanks for the info --Muhammad(talk) 00:13, 6 September 2011 (UTC)
- I could see four moons of Jupiter when I pointed my 500mm at it. I thought that was pretty cool. Not really possible to take photos without an equatorial mount or mucking around with stacking though (one just gets streaks). There are even galaxies close, but too dim for the naked eye to see, that can be photographed with such focal lengths (eg). JJ Harrison (talk) 06:00, 6 September 2011 (UTC)

Linking instead of transcluding at FPC
Hi JJ, I was wondering if you think that File:Tako to ama retouched.jpg would also require regular linking instead of transclusion. I am waiting for a translation of the text before nominating, but I don't want to cause too big a stink. The image itself is more explicit (and weirder... octopi) than the current hentai nomination, but significant in the development of the tentacle pornography genre and a notable work in and of its own right. Crisco 1492 (talk) 10:16, 13 September 2011 (UTC)
- If you have to think about it, then it is probably better to link rather than include a thumbnail. It is just so people don't get surprises at work/university/... I would do so if you nominated that image. JJ Harrison (talk) 10:18, 13 September 2011 (UTC)

- I've also got some OBP videos too, but I haven't uploaded them, since once encoded to ogg at reasonable visual quality they are above the commons file size limit and have stupid bit rates. I really wish we would hurry up with h264 video support, but I don't really know where to raise noise about it. I might see if I can cut shorter them at some point to make them fit. I was very pleased about the Honeyeater - I'm not sure that bit of behaviour has ever been photographed before. JJ Harrison (talk) 23:05, 16 November 2011 (UTC)

Hi JJ Harrison,
You may want to have a look here, where one of your photos have been nominated for FPC. A peculiar halo has been seen around the bird. Is it divine interference or some easy-to-explain artifact? Cheers, --Slaunger (talk) 21:43, 6 December 2011 (UTC)

Congratz on the POTD on Commons
I had not seen the that PIC for some time. I think that among your many excellent pics this one stands out from a compositional point of view as being extraordinarily good! --Slaunger (talk) 07:57, 5 January 2012 (UTC)
I appreciate the joke, but can you please resolve this back to something coherent before a closer ends up discounting both of your votes? Thanks. Papa Lima Whiskey 2 (talk) 15:51, 8 January 2012 (UTC)
Something for you!

WMAU camera equipment grant program
Hi JJ Harrison,
There is a discussion ongoing at Commons:User talk:John Vandenberg#Potential problem with the camera equipment grant program, where I have mentioned something about the resolution of your uploads and current license used. You may want to fact check that, as I am not entirely sure I am getting it right. --Slaunger (talk) 22:23, 10 January 2012 (UTC)
Yogo sapphire photo reshoots
Hi. I was wondering if you could help me out. See Talk:Yogo sapphire, specifically Talk:Yogo_sapphire#Reshoot_of_Yogo_sapphires and its subsections. I'm trying to get decent pics of two Yogo sapphires. Any help appreciated. PumpkinSky talk 01:37, 11 January 2012 (UTC)
