The X Factor (British TV series) series 9
Template:Infobox reality music competition The X Factor is a British television music competition to find new singing talent. The ninth series will begin airing on ITV in August 2012.[citation needed] It has so far been confirmed that Louis Walsh, Gary Barlow and Tulisa Contostavlos will return to the judging panel. Geri Halliwell was a guest judge for the Liverpool auditions and Leona Lewis will fill in for the London auditions, as a replacement for Kelly Rowland has not yet been found.
Dermot O'Leary will return as host on ITV, whilst Caroline Flack and Olly Murs will return to host The Xtra Factor on ITV2, although Murs will only be present for the live shows due to his tour commitments.
Judges and presenters
On 17 April 2012, it was confirmed that series 8 judge Gary Barlow would return to the judging panel for series 9,[1][2] and on 3 May it was announced that Louis Walsh would also return for his ninth year on the panel.[3][4] Series 8 judge Tulisa Contostavlos is also returning,[5] but Kelly Rowland will not return due to other commitments.[6][7] A fourth permanent judge was not found in time for the start of the auditions, so guest judging roles were brought in, with Geri Halliwell[8] and Leona Lewis[9] confirmed, and Gwen Stefani, Robbie Williams[10] Melanie Brown, Rita Ora,[9] and Rod Stewart[5] named as possibilities. Alexandra Burke is also in talks to return as a guest judge.[11] It has been reported that Halliwell is the only person in line for the permanent judging position, with her guest judging slot being described as a "trial run".[8] However, other names reported to be in line for the permanent role are Anastacia, series 1-4 judge Sharon Osbourne,[12] Alesha Dixon and Rochelle Wiseman.[13] Series 4-7 judge Dannii Minogue,[14][15] Katy Perry, Nicole Scherzinger and Rihanna are said to have turned down the role.[13]
Dermot O'Leary will continue to present the main show on ITV,[16] while Caroline Flack and Olly Murs will return to co-present companion show The Xtra Factor on ITV2, but Murs will only present during the live shows as he will be on tour.[17]
Auditions
This series, for the first time, applicants were able to audition online via Facebook. The closing date for online auditions was 8 May 2012.[18] The show's producers also sent a "mobile audition van" to 18 locations throughout the UK and Ireland in order to audition singers who could not make the arena auditions. The mobile auditions began in Plymouth and finish 18 days later in Brighton. The van visited a different location every day except when it spent two days in Dublin on 28 and 29 April. The other towns and cities it visited were Aberystwyth, Bangor, Blackpool, Carlisle, Edinburgh, Inverness, Aberdeen, Dundee, Middlesbrough, Wakefield, Derby, Norwich, Colchester, Southend-on-Sea and Chatham.[19]
