  Do be civil
  Do keep cool!
Do maintain a neutral point of view
  Don't spam
  Don't infringe copyright
Don't edit where you have a conflict of interest
  Don't vandalize
  Don't get blocked
If you need further help, you can:
  Ask a question
or even:
Ask an experienced editor to "adopt" you

Alternatively, leave me a message at my talk page or type {{helpme}} here on your talk page, and someone will try to help.

There are many ways you can contribute to Wikipedia. Here are a few ideas:
  Fight vandalism
Be a WikiFairy or a WikiGnome
  Help contribute to articles

  Perform maintenance tasks
Become a member of a project that interests you
  Help design new templates

Remember to always sign your posts on talk pages. You can do this either by clicking on the button on the edit toolbar or by typing four tildes (~~~~) at the end of your post. This will automatically insert your signature, a link to this (your talk) page, and a timestamp.

The best way to learn about something is to experience it. Explore, learn, contribute, and don't forget to have some fun!
To get some practice editing you can use a sandbox. You can create your own private sandbox for use any time. Perfect for working on bigger projects. Then for easy access in the future, you can put {{My sandbox}} on your userpage.

Hi Chad, I was thinking about your class when putting this list up a few days back. Preliminary Googling of the redlinks here suggests that at least a few of these journalists died in the line of duty--might be a place for some of your students to start.

Online Ambassador

Hi. I've signed up as an OA for your course. I've previously done OA duty on a US Public Policy course. Perhaps you could contact me by email (or, if you prefer, on my Talk page) so that I can get up to speed with where the course has got to, plus discuss how you and the students would like me to help. Best. --GuillaumeTell 19:10, 7 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hello again. Today I had an unexpected but welcome message on my Talk page from User:Sahara6sb and I've replied on her Talk page - have a look at what I said (and feel free to complain to me if you don't like it). I was rather surprised that you'd posted a message to her on her User page rather than her Talk page, and even more surprised that you'd added a {{Cleanup-link rot}} tag there. User pages are just for users to say as much or as little as they want about themselves. Talk pages are for ... Talk. Clean-up and other tags are for WP articles, not User or Talk pages. Hope this doesn't sound too brusque. Best. --GuillaumeTell 01:44, 12 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Dr. Tew, Could give me a few pointers on how to use Reflinks? I know you would like me to run it for my journalist articles but I am struggling. Thanks, Sahara6sb (talk) 06:51, 12 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I understand as I was confused the first time, too. You know how you open a new window in a new tab in your browser? You'll want to do that when you run the Reflinks. Be patient when you run it as its crawling the web looking for all that information and never comes up instantly. When you have the two browser tabs loaded -- one is your Wikipedia page with sources and the other is the results from the Reflinks tool -- you just go to the first reference in Reflink and change the box to either citation web format, which is default, or citation news. Many times our citations will be switched to news. Then you copy what's in that box and paste is between the open and close REF tags on your Wikpedia target page with your sources. When you save it, you should see the full link and the title will most likely have the link embedded so you can click on the title to see the original. Just like before, that Reflist template displays everything automatically. Isn't Wikipedia great? So many useful tools. Crtew (talk) 07:07, 12 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Online Ambassador Program

Hi. I've signed up as an Online Ambassador for your course - GuillameTell is the other ambassador for this project. Please let me know of any help that your students may need. Do you also require a list of journalists killed abroad, whether they currently have a Wikipedia article or not? Thanks. ~AH1 (discuss!) 02:17, 18 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Adopt a journalist project

Hi. Thanks for the note. I'll be happy to help (and if I can't, I can contact other helpful Wikipedians). I'll get up to speed by taking a look at how things have been going so far. Best. --GuillaumeTell 18:05, 13 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. March break perhaps explains why the Ambassador program has been quiet lately - I can take a look at the article drafts and deliver helpful suggestions as needed; do you want the ambassadors to abstain from editing the user drafts until they are ready for publication? In any case, typically WP:AFC is reserved for anonymous editors who do not have accounts, and it is recommended that new editors use the "Article creation wizard" available on any redlinked mainspace page, such as this one. I can see at this point that Pending AfC submissions (AUTOPAT may be relevant for such purposes) is already severely backlogged, so it may be advisable to submit articles directly to Wikipedia after review and checking for NPOV. Thanks. ~AH1 (discuss!) 18:55, 14 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Having students create a sandbox page and submitting it to a Wikipedia ambassador seems fine; however, I'd rather not have to review 50 article drafts on the same day! In need of a reviewer, we could find additional Wikipedians who are currently involved in the larger OA program or I could try to find groups of editors who would be willing to "review" student-submitted articles (and maybe even clear the existing backlog). The standard template may become confusing, but I suggest instructing students on the essential layout of an article. This may include, for example, a lede, sections and subsections (appropriate titles), body text, citations, a bibliography/list of references, external links, and categories. The categories and external links are a bit more advanced, but the layout is really not difficult to learn.
Now if students are trying to edit the main page, we might have a problem. Currently only admins are allowed to edit that page, while everyone else is able to "view source". It's good to start on a citation-based level, that is drawing information first from the reliable sources (but without copy-pasting anything!) and then adding more information. Hope this helps! ~AH1 (discuss!) 02:28, 16 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Re: article - "Death of Jamal al-Sharaabi"

Well, it looks like we have two options here. One is that we can speedily delete (CSD G2, G7 or R2) the existing article after moving the page and its edit history to the student's userspace, and then tagging the redirect page for deletion (add notes such as "author request" or "unfinished student project", etc). The other option is to tag the article using {{underconstruction}} and add the Wikipedia-university collaboration tag on the talk page (optional). It's quite possible for there to be occasional conflicts between common practices of the educational environment and that of Wikipedia. In any case, the article itself has a few issues: the external links are formatted improperly, thus resulting in the [ref] tag errors. Overall, the article needs expansion, more context and likely more references in other media sources. ~AH1 (discuss!) 22:14, 22 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The speedy delete & move sounds like the best option. She needs to submit this through the AFC and the other option seems to bypass that. Should I have her move that page?Crtew (talk) 22:24, 23 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The article looks well-developed by now, but she can move and CSD the page if necessary as part of the assignment, mentioning such on the edit summary. In an interactive editing experience it is easy to forget that the submissions are live and able to be edited in real-time. Have you decided the process for article submission, and how did it work in past years? - hopefully this won't have an adverse impact on the students' ability to earn course marks! ~AH1 (discuss!) 11:57, 27 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Astro, I actually grade them independently from Wikipedia's system. Some journalists, especially from local situations, are often hard to get into Wikipedia because of notability issues. Those journalists just may fit better in already existing articles about a topic. But I can't judge those in the same way I would a western journalist who is covered in the international press. So I actually have a rubric page, if you search my name User:Crtew you'll see a rubric in one of the titles. I use that for grading! The submission process works well because it pushes students to do quality work and it's another independent perspective on what quality is! That's a great thing for students to be exposed to. Thanks for your help! Crtew (talk) 16:15, 27 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding your journalist assignment

Hello, Crtew! I'm contacting you in regards to the assignment you give, in which your students write about a journalist who has been killed. I was asked to move Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Karim Fakhrawi to the AfC namespace, as there was a previous version of the article still in place there. Although your student has cited reliable sources showing significant coverage, it appears, at least from the article your student has written, that coverage of his death is the only coverage that the journalist received. You might consider advising your students about the 1E part of the notability policy for people, which discusses the issue of people who are only notable for one event. If the journalist is notable for other things as well, your students should be advised to add the additional information to the articles. Thanks! Kjb1902, about your article on Abdisalan Sheikh Hassan: Good search for references! You were also able to fill out all the major sections in your draft. Checked on 29 April 2012. The big problem was when I checked your sources, you had mixed up two journalists; I removed the factual errors that resulted from this mistake. I also edited out the last of the "peacock" and POV statements; Wikipedia is an encyclopedia and so just like the objective era of journalism, "Just the facts!" Hey Dr. 2, I think I made the necessary changes. Am I ready to submit? Spirit of Steph (talk) 18:53, 27 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You had a lot of good references and a very good draft. You didn't use all those sources, however, as effectively as you might have to detail the significance, the cirmstances of death, and the public dialogue that the incident provoked. I made some changes with those. Submit! Crtew (talk) 19:27, 30 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I have finished making changes to my article! Thanks Decurry (talk) 22:52, 24 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Dr. Tew, I think my article is ready to be submitted. It is in my sandbox (per the instructions of our Wiki ambassador). Please inform me of any changes that need made and the next step that I need to do to submit. Thanks. Sahara6sb (talk) 16:36, 30 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Decurry, Good work, I did use some info from another student who was working on the son and some of my own info. You packed too much detail at the top about the murder for the significance. If you look at the copy now, you might think that I did the same thing, but what I was trying to do is to get the big picture. It was a complicated story that expanded out to other articles, like the one for Yolanda. This article was the inspiration for a new category in Wikipedia: "Victims of the Mexican Drug War." It's new. I created it and assigned some other journalists to the category. I also added a map for Veracruz and template for the Mexican Drug War to the article. Go ahead and submit! Click on the submit on the topmost banner. Good Luck, Crtew (talk) 21:29, 30 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

LexisNexis

Hi Dr2. I am havin major issues trying to get sources from LexisNexis. I have tried just searching Wanderley Canuto Leandro and then I have tried search Wanderley since that is what he is known by. Can you please let me know what I'm doing wrong? Thanks! Jill Ackerman (talk) 14:27, 25 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I don't believe this will pass Wikipedia because of the lack of SIGCOV and you haven't established his importance in the lead. Why should he be in an encyclopedia? If you were able to search Lexis Nexis for Portugese sources and translate in Google, I'm sure you would get news coverage. Have a Rice Librarian help you out. Take a look: I added links to deorphan it. You still had problems with bare links as not all of them were fixed. It took about 1 minute and 2 cuts and pastes to fix. Crtew (talk) 20:17, 1 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Can you tell me how to search in Lexis Nexis? I have tried many times and I always come up with nothing. Thank you.

Jill Ackerman (talk) 00:13, 2 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

1. There is a lecture I posted in Blackboard on searching Lexis-Nexis with graphics in the Part II folder. 2. If you're still having problems, then it's best to speak to a librarian to help with your search strategy. Many times that's what the actual problem is but people don't play around with the combinations enough to draw out the target articles. 3. I suspect that you're not looking foreign language articles, as I said above.

Essay

Dr. 2, I would like to express my feelings about your statement on my page "Looking over this one day effort, I'm not seeing hard work or detail". I've spent several days on this project only to lose all my information and had to start over. Once I got what you based your statement on was when I decided to give up on this project and depend on being able to complete the other essays. I have been waiting on you to post information that would help me better understand this assignment since March. I was one of very few students that had completed your request on your email from Feb 28 with the reporters name and info by spring break. Since you never responded to any of my e-mails I was depending on essay 2 & 3 to help my grade thinking they didn't have anything to do with this Wiki site project. I totally didn't understand how to use this tool and have only been able to complete what I have by viewing my classmates postings to understand this project. I've received several e-mails from other classmates that were having the same problem. Please review and let me know if I can submit. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Wnwilson1 (talkcontribs) 03:22, 28 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Dr2,

I think I may be finished with my essay. I ran Reflinks like you asked me to and it said, "no changes were necessary: reference template found." I sent you an e-mail on Tuesday, but you never got back to me so I did the best I could. I deleted all of the references that I didn't use in my essay to get rid of all of the clutter. However, my info box now looks different than before so I may have deleted something that I didn't need to. Please let me know what needs to be changed. I will submit it as soon as you tell me to. Thanks,Elbrown1234 (talk) 16:00, 28 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Dr.2, I am really concerned because I have not received a response from you and tomorrow is our last day. I have sent a couple of e-mails with questions and I have wrote on your talk page. I cannot improve my essay if I do not know what needs to be changed. If you feel that I am ready to submit then please let me know. Thank-you Elbrown1234 (talk) 06:41, 1 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Your new edits were good. I sharpened up the lead as it had too much information in it. The more specific details should be in the body. The lead is big picture stuff. He was the second journalist to be killed within a week after the start of the Bahraini uprising. There are also torture photos that were available on Wikimedia Commons (Creative Commons license), and I selected the least gruesome one for the page. It's also categorized. Please go to the page and look at the top banner. Yours is the new type and you have a "click here" to save link. Use that to submit once you look at my changes. I'll see that it's submitted in my watch list. Good luck -- it looks great now, Crtew (talk) 17:37, 30 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

He is the only Iranian journalist listed as having died cover the War in Afghanistan. But you need to explain the context behind the Taliban attack that killed him. Ask a Rice Librarian to help you find an article about the death incident. Fill out the context. Look at the other foreign journalists who died during that war as a model. Article Submission

I believe my article is ready for submission although I still had some questions. I went ahead and left links in it for fellow student articles that have yet to be completed and I left a reference to the only photo I could find of Bashir Gedi but after much reading, I gathered that I could only add a photo after the article was approved by Wikipedia. I hope its close to meeting their standards because I eliminated my own bias, corrected my spelling and grammar, and verified my references. I hope I ridded the article of bare URLs but I am not overly confident that I have but I was stumped as to what else I could have done. Dredd45 (talk) 02:58, 1 May 2012 (UTC) Brian McKinney[reply]

Dredd45, I won't accept any articles that have bare links, which are those plain URLs that you see that look like http:// blah blah blah. It's so easy to trun the Reflinks tool. You right click on the reflinks tool on a PC in the bare links banner and that opens another window (can be slow but don't worry). Then you copy from open to close ref tags and psate it to replace the open to close ref tags with bare links in your target article. Easy! You must do this and then resubmit. Also tell us why Gedi was important. Focus on the role that Radio Shabelle plays! Write that up for the impact section.Crtew (talk) 05:52, 1 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Help request

I generally agree with the other reviewer's most recent comments when it comes to asserting notability and whether the article is to be about the journalist himself, or his murder. Taking a look at the article myself, it does indeed have significant inter-continental coverage from a variety of countries, as well as numerous sources. The "Impact" section is perhaps the most significant, because it suggests the journalist's death is making a landmark case, possibly setting a precedent in Somalia. That section will need expansion, and more references. The "Personal" section, though, might be better being called "Biography", "early life" or something along those lines, depending on the focus of the article. The article actually provides little context, in the sense that it mentions over two dozen other journalists being killed in Somalia since 2007, but why is this journalist more notable than say, the other 25 journalists who likely don't have articles? The "context" section, while helpful, seems a bit misplaced—it may be better to discuss the ongoing conflicts and/or the role of media in Somalia and the surrounding Horn of Africa region, and depict the generalization that Somalia is a dangerous country as a backstory to the main text. What was the journalist covering around the time of the 'assassination', and what were the reactions from the media channel, from authorities, and from any international colleagues? What about the possible motives, and is the suspect saying anything, and are there any extremist militants involved or is this a run-of-the-mill targeted crime? What was the context of the death threat, if available, and finally is the event itself notable, that is the actual shooting or any background conflicts in Somalia unfolding when he was killed, or just the act of the murder itself that most citations focus on that support notability?

In summary, I recommend deciding whether to write the article to focus on the deceased journalist himself (in which case the article functions as a biography), on the killing of the journalist, or indeed on the series of events that led to the killing. Once this is clearly established, the availability and integration of references should reflect this theme—while there is indeed significant coverage surrounding the death, it is a good idea to include a wide variety of citations for each section, and streamline the sections to bring out the content.

Hope this helps. As an aside, when do classes conclude for the winter/spring term for your course, and does it vary between different universities in the US? ~AH1 (discuss!) 01:25, 2 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I've also had a look at the AFC and generally agree with User:Dalisays's comments and with what AH1 says above. An alternative approach which struck me was based on the fact that 24 (or whatever) journalists have been killed in Somalia since 2007. A more general article (maybe Journalists killed in Somalia since 2007) encompassing the background plus all the deaths and their circumstances, with refs, would seem to me to pass the notability test (but obviously that couldn't easily be done in time for tomorrow). Category:Journalists_killed_in_Somalia could possibly provide some ideas - and there are lots of articles on the ongoing civil war in Somalia. --GuillaumeTell 16:45, 2 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The articles in this category seem to be judged upon the swing between WP:SIGCOV and WP:VICTIM and WP:1E. That's the issue. I also agree that the article could be improved and you both make great suggestions. Can you help me with this Notability problem in general?Crtew (talk) 18:38, 2 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
