Requested move

Per Wikipedia:Naming_conventions#Use_the most_easily_recognized_name this article should be at KevJumba (note capital "J"). Until recently, this was a frequently deleted and recreated page so the target name is protected. You can read about the AfDs and DRV in one of the templates above if you like, but basically the latest thing that happened was DRV where the page was allowed to exist. There are few users aware of this page, and none of them would object to this move as far as I know. - Peregrine Fisher (talk) (contribs) 18:26, 5 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Please check references before removing any information

While I do not own this article, I did write it. There is not a single piece of information in it that comes from my own personal experience. All I do is search google news, find articles about KevJumba, and summarize them. If you think some fact is not supported by a reference, I recommend you read the reference cited. I'm not sure why this article is attracting people who don't believe the information is reliably cited, but hopefully people will ask on this talk page first next time. Thanks.

As far as what I just reverted, the information is in the article that's referenced at the end of that section. You might want to read it. Maybe there's a better wording, I don't know. - Peregrine Fisher (talk) (contribs) 05:14, 6 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

article redirect - what's going on?

This article was redirected from Kevin Wu to the current name of KevJumba. It is still listed under Kevin Wu on GAN. What's going on? —Mattisse (Talk) 03:20, 25 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It should be changed to KevJumba at WP:GAN. - Peregrine Fisher (talk) (contribs) 05:24, 25 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Nationality

I changed the nationality to Chinese-American because he is chinese. please do not change it or if you do, please state the reason why. 97.117.246.242 (talk) 18:37, 26 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

His nationality is American. Basically, he's an American citizen. His ethnicity is Chinese-American, but ethnicity isn't one of the things that goes into Template:Infobox Internet celebrity. If you want to mention that he's Chinese-American it will have to go in the article itself. Make sure you find a reference that states his ethnicity though. - Peregrine Fisher (talk) (contribs) 00:05, 27 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I see that the lead currently reads Taiwanese-American. Can we get citations regarding nationality? Thanks, --Tom (talk) 20:13, 14 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Here's a Youtube video for a short interview he did with TaiwaneseAmerican.org starting at ~0:31 where he states "I'm Taiwanese." [1] -Multivariable (talk) 23:34, 6 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
He's referring to his "ETHNICITY" not his NATIONALITY. Those are two different things. Also, if you want to use Youtube as a source of reference. Watch his video "Kevjumba vs Iyaz", go to the 1:00 minute mark where Kevin says, "You know I'm Chinese, right?". Looks like Kevin has no problem with claiming to be Chinese.

Yes, but if you ever try to look up Kevin's dad's hometown, It's NOT going to be in China. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.0.243.72 (talk) 04:38, 13 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yup, his dad grew up in Taiwan. However, Kevin is of Chinese heritage. He is Chinese-American. His nationality would be American, and his ethnicity Chinese. Airplaneman 04:51, 13 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Or would his ethnicity be Taiwanese? Probably depends how long his family has lived in Taiwan.

No,actually it more depends on how a individual thinks of himself. As people can see,Taiwan is the core of "Republic of China" right now,and Republic of CHINA IS a Chinese nation according to its name, history and constitution, besides, most of ROC citizens are the descendants of Chinese immigrants from main land China, they speak Chinese, write Chinese, and still have Chinese custom,so they still can be Chinese heritage no matter how long they lived here, these are all facts even if some Taiwanese or Taiwanese-Americans are constantly trying to deny due to their political wishes.

He claims to be Chinese here: http://aarising.com/aprofiler/kevjumba.htm, you could put both? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.254.44.238 (talk) 05:00, 16 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

GA Review

This review is transcluded from Talk:KevJumba/GA1. The edit link for this section can be used to add comments to the review.

Putting aside my personal distaste for Youtube "celebrities", this article does a decent job of covering Wu. A few things came up during the review:

  1. I still don't know anything about his videos. What makes them special? What are they about? Can an example from a popular video be given? How about a quotation or two?
Done – I decribed the two that were mentioned in other sources. I think that's enough. I could describe more of them, but they aren't really that notable individually. - Peregrine Fisher (talk) (contribs) 20:38, 2 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  2. Stating that the videos "are funny" in the lead is point of view.
Done – I cited the reporter who said it. I'll change the later quotes so they're different later. - Peregrine Fisher (talk) (contribs) 01:21, 1 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  3. "his deadpan vocal delivery, animated facial expressions and tendency toward unexpected digressions" is repeated. Varying the prose would help.
Done – I summarized a different part of the article instead of repeating it. - Peregrine Fisher (talk) (contribs) 17:18, 1 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  4. "third most subscribed overall" - third most subscribed what? This problem is also repeated later in the article.
Done – I added that it was third most subscribed YouTube user with a description of what that means. - Peregrine Fisher (talk) (contribs) 17:18, 1 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  5. What "I have to deal with Stereotypes" video? You can't assume that the reader has watched any of his videos.
     Done – Described it. - Peregrine Fisher (talk) (contribs) 20:38, 2 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  6. "He chose the name KevJumba because his friend used MattJumba as a screename, which he thought was funny, so he decided to use Jumba in his own YouTube username." - this sentence needs a rewrite so that it is more formal and less repetitive.
     Done – I tightened it up. - Peregrine Fisher (talk) (contribs) 00:19, 3 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  7. Putting some of Yang's comments into your own words would help rather than just giving a long quotation.
Done – I reduced the amount of quoting. - Peregrine Fisher (talk) (contribs) 17:18, 1 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  8. Saying that he "currently has more than 300,000 subscribers" doesn't work for an online encyclopedia. This information will get dated, so this needs to be phrased some other way. "As of October 2008", perhaps.
Done – I did that. The problem is that people like to come in and update the number without updating the date. We'll see how it goes. - Peregrine Fisher (talk) (contribs) 17:18, 1 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  9. Can you give a brief description of the shows mentioned in the "Other work" section?
     Done – I added a sentence describing each show. - Peregrine Fisher (talk) (contribs) 00:19, 3 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  10. "Los Angeles Times" should be italicized.
     DonePeregrine Fisher (talk) (contribs) 01:21, 1 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  11. Can anything be said about his show on BlogTV?
Done – I summarized its basic stats. I think that's about all I can do without OR. - Peregrine Fisher (talk) (contribs) 00:19, 3 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  12. References 1 and 18 need publishers.

I will place this nomination on hold. Any comments or questions can be left here, as I have the page on my watchlist. Best wishes, GaryColemanFan (talk) 22:08, 31 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Looks good. The article has been cleaned up, and I have a much better sense of who he is now. Since the article meets all six of the GA criteria, I am promoting it. Congratulations, and thanks for your hard work and quick response.

If you have a chance, it would be great if you could review an article in return to cut down on the backlog at WP:GAN. Thanks, GaryColemanFan (talk) 20:19, 3 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the review. I have done 4 reviews and have nominated 3 articles and I try to keep things fairly even. I'll review another one soon. - Peregrine Fisher (talk) (contribs) 21:54, 3 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
One's ethnicity or heritage does not just stop at their parents, it can include all family history thus I bet Kevjumba also has actual Chinese heritage. There are many 3rd generation and beyond Asian-Americans who were born and raised in the USA. If we all went by parents, none of them would even be Asian. Kevin's profile should include both Chinese and Taiwanese as his heritage, since he claims both. That should be the end of the discussion. PinoyFilAmPride (talk) 18:27, 10 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Fanfluff

I lost my edit summary, sorry. It's not fanfluff, it's why he's notable, and it comes from a reliable source. - Peregrine Fisher (talk) (contribs) 23:32, 8 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

YouTube as references

I have been told a time or two that YouTube is not good for references. I know KevJumba is known on YouTube, but shouldn't you find something else to reference it if possible? Mr. C.C. (talk) 01:09, 2 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Well, it's definitely an OK source for a list of his videos. Where else will you find a complete list of his videos that is any more reliable than where the videos are at? Airplaneman 14:18, 30 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Chinese name

needs to be found, if possible. unless he really has that low Taiwanese consciousness. 华钢琴49 (TALK) 01:56, 22 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Biographical information

As a Good Article, shouldn't this article contain biographical information about him? Other than his hometown and college, it provides no information about his life prior to becoming a celebrity. Ωphois 05:29, 15 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

ancestry

ancestry- taiwan? does that mean he is hokien? — Preceding unsigned comment added by ASD955668FYDS (talkcontribs) 17:31, 8 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Chinese name

I can't seem to locate the source for the Chinese name given in the article. In particular, it doesn't seem to be in the video currently cited in the lead (It's just the Amazing Race video). Forgive me if I've missed something obvious. Leonxlin (talk) 00:30, 31 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Do we mention it?--Deely talk 03:07, 5 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

How can he be both at the same time? --Hartz (talk) 17:43, 24 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
