Priyanka Chopra is an Indian actress who has appeared in many motion pictures and one television program. She made her acting debut in 2002, in the Tamil film Thamizhan. The following year, she made her Bollywood debut starring alongside Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta in the patriotic drama film The Hero.[1] The same year, Chopra played a supporting role alongside Akshay Kumar and Lara Dutta in the romantic musical drama Andaaz. The film was a major box-office success described as the "first universal hit of the year".[2] Chopra's role of a vivacious young girl received praise from film critics and won her the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut.[3][4] In 2004, Chopra appeared opposite Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar in the romantic comedy Mujhse Shaadi Karogi. The film, a commercial success, emerged as the third-highest-grossing film of the year in India. The same year, she starred in the critically acclaimed thriller Aitraaz. Her portrayal of a seductress (Mrs. Sonia Roy) received wide critical acclaim from critics and is often cited as her breakthrough role.[3] She also won the Filmfare Award for Best Performance in a Negative Role for the film, becoming the second and final woman[I] to win the award after Kajol.[4] Chopra starred in six films in 2005 including Waqt and Bluffmaster!, both of which were moderately successful.[5] However the other four films proved unsuccessful at the box-office, although her performance in Yakeen received rave reviews.[5]

In 2006, Chopra starred alongside Hrithik Roshan in the blockbuster superhero flick Krrish, a sequel to the 2004 science-fiction film Koi... Mil Gaya. Later that year she starred alongside Shahrukh Khan in the action-thriller Don, a remake of the 1978 film of the same name. Both films earned more than 1 billion (US$12 million) worldwide thus becoming on of the highest grossing films of the year in India.[6] After a successful 2006, Chopra starred in a series of commercial and critical failures, such as Salaam-e-Ishq, Love Story 2050 and Drona.[5] The mixed response to her films and performances at this time generally led critics to believe that the end of her career was imminent.[5] However, Chopra starred as Meghna Mathur (a troubled model) in the 2008 drama film Fashion. The film was critically acclaimed and grossed 600 million (US$7 million) at the box-office and was noted for being a commercial success despite being a women-centric film and the absence of a male lead.[7][8] Chopra's performance earned her the Filmfare and the National Film Award for Best Actress.[4] The same year, she starred in romantic comedy Dostana, which emerged as a financial success and received generally favourable reviews, with Chopra's performance and appearance in the film earning a positive reaction.[9] She then starred in the 2009 caper thriller Kaminey alongside Shahid Kapoor. After its release, the film received highly positive reviews becoming a commercial success and is considered as a cult film.[10] The same year she starred in the social comedy What's Your Raashee?, a film for which Chopra was reportedly being considered for inclusion in the Guinness World Records for being the first actress in the world to portray twelve distinct characters in one film.[11] Although the film was a critical and commercial failure, Chopra's performance was well received.[12] In 2010, Chopra became a television host with the third season of the action based reality show Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi on the Colors channel which surpassed the opening ratings of the previous two seasons.[13]

In 2011, Chopra starred as Susanna Anna-Marie Johannes, a serial sprouse killer in the critically acclaimed black comedy 7 Khoon Maaf, an adaptation of Ruskin Bond's short story Susanna's Seven Husbands. Chopra's portrayal was highly praised by film critics,[14] and earned her the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actress.[4] Later that year, Chopra reprised her role as Roma in the second installment of the Don series, entitled Don 2. Chopra and the film both received positive reviews from critics. The film was a major success earning over 2.06 billion (US$25 million) worldwide.[6] In 2012, she starred in the action drama Agneepath, a remake of the 1990 classic of the same name. Upon release, the film broke the highest opening day collections record at the time and became a financial success with a worldwide gross of 1.93 billion (US$23 million).[6] The same year, Chopra starred alongside Ranbir Kapoor and Ileana D'Cruz in the romantic comedy-drama Barfi! in which she played an autistic girl Jhilmil. The film received rave reviews from film critics and was a major commercial success, earning 1.75 billion (US$21 million) worldwide.[6] Chopra received unanimous praise for her portrayal, which several reviewers regarded as her best performance to date.[15] All three films emerged as one of highest grossing films of the year as well as one of the highest grossing Bollywood films of all time.[6]
