Department of Management Studies (DoMS) at Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT Roorkee)[1] part of the IIT Schools of Management, was established in 1998 to impart education in management science. The MBA programme was launched by the institute to reflect the present-day needs of dynamic business and economic scenario and to harvest the talent of best technocrats of the nation by infusing the management concepts in them to face the challenges of corporate world.

In 2012, DoMS, IIT Roorkee was ranked 12th among B-Schools in India by 'Business Today' and was ranked 10th in 2013. In 2013 it was also conferred with “B-School Leadership Award” by Bloomberg-UTV in B-School Excellence Awards.

DoMS, IIT Roorkee offers 2 year full time MBA program with dual specialization and Ph.D programs in management domain. The department has 83 Ph.D scholars. It has a rich department library with over 6200 titles , apart from the exhaustive Central Library of IIT with 3,50,000 documents in all media, computer labs with softwares like SPSS AMOS, Primavera, LISREL, DEA and databases like iCube,CMI etc.; Access to numerous National & International publications like EBSCO,ABI Inform, Inspec, Taylor & Francis,Wiley,Oxford University Press,Tata McGraw Hill, HBR,etc.; WiFi enabled premises powered with 45 Mbps leased line.

DoMS firmly believes in the importance of values such as Hard work, Commitment, Integrity, Excellence & Leadership. The DoMS distinguishes itself from other B-Schools in India by giving it’s students a holistic education comprising of out of classroom activities oriented based curriculum which aims to rediscover, prepare & inspire DoMS students to bring out their best for others and themselves. Combined with the institute’s highly interactive & engaging pedagogy, students are required to complete a 9 weeks internship before post-graduating. It has a highly qualified faculty who has also made contributions to various researches in the same domain.

DoMS at IIT Roorkee offers a dual specialization in any two of the following categories:

  5. Human Resources


Academics

DoMS, IIT Roorkee follows a course credit system similar to that used in most American universities. Each individual course within the University is assigned a certain credit weightage and students are usually required to take a specified number of units to fulfill requirements for graduation. Courses are typically conducted as classroom lectures, guest lectures, case studies, live projects, industrial visits, knowledge sharing sessions & surprise quizzes apart from examinations.

Admissions

The admissions prior to 2012 were through Joint Management Entrance Test (JMET) held collectively by IITs and IISc each year.[2] After the exam, aspirants were required to fill the Application downloadable from institute website. They were called for GD/PIs based on JMET scores, academic consistency, qualification and work experience.

From the year 2012, the Department of Management Studies, along with similar departments in other IITs, only accepts admission through the Common Admission Test. The joint management entrance test (JMET), previously used for admission by the IITs and IISc has been discontinued. [3]


Student Life

The environment at DoMS, IITR is learning-oriented in alignment to practical applications of their skills. The student life at DoMS, IITR surpasses the limits of classroom & theoretical knowledge. The students are highly motivated by faculty to participate in various extra-curricular activities, which help them to sharpen their skills as well as to contribute to strengthen the institute. The various committees and cells nurturing at DoMS, IITR are:


Placement Committee

The placement committee at DoMS, IITR is a team of selected highly motivated students having dynamic and versatile skills to stimulate and maintain relations with the industry while simultaneously creating opportunities for summer internship & executive placements for their respective batch.


Alumni Relations Cell

The Alumni relations cell is an association of current students & DoMS, IITR, which performs the function of an interface between DoMS, IITR and its alumni. It aims to connect and maintain relationship with its alumni and create a network, which can efficiently contribute to its roots of alma mater. It achieves this goal by organizing the following events:

  • Reminiscence: Annual meet of last passed out batch with the batches currently pursuing MBA at DoMS
  • Regalia: Annual meet of all alumni of DoMS IIT Roorkee at DoMS
  • Shaping The Future: Rendezvous with IIT Roorkee alumni having industry experience of more than 25 years
  • Annual Chapter Meets: Rendezvous with DoMS IIT Roorkee alumni in tier-1 cities


Media Cell

Media cell initiates and responds to all internal as well as external communications of DoMS, IITR. It performs following responsibilities:

  • Takes care of all external communications of DoMS with other B-schools, MBA forums (Pagalguy etc.), social media portals (Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin) and MBA aspirants
  • Covers all the events of DoMS and interacts with national & local print media to publish news about the same
  • Takes care of all the content of DoMS IIT Roorkee official website and blog


Newsletter Cell

Newsletter cell is a team of students dedicated to publish monthly magazine ‘Domination’, which cover all the events & activities at DoMS and also includes articles written by students on versatile topics.

Clubs

  • OPERAZiONE (Operations club)

The official operations club of DoMS, IIT Roorkee which aspires to share practical knowledge on concepts of operations, Supply chain, Logistics and International Trade through organizing summits, guest lectures, industrial visits, Live projects, quizzes and simulation games. It organizes the annual Operations summit 'Abhyudaya' which in recent past has involved imminent speakers like Mr. Mangu Singh, M.D, DMRC & Mr. Pradeep Kapse, Technical Advisor, VECV.

  • MARKIIT (Marketing club)

The official marketing club of the Department of Management Studies, IIT Roorkee which not only aims at consolidating large scale events, but also lays impetus on peer-to-peer knowledge sessions that include discussions on prevalent trends/practices, case studies and quizzes under the gamut of marketing that eventually help everyone turn out to be better marketers and managers. It organizes the annual Operations summit 'Vipanan' which in recent past has involved imminent speakers like Mr. D. Bhattacharyya, Sr. Executive Director (HR), IFFCO & Mr. Shushobhan Chowdhury, VP and Head of Digital Strategy India, JWT

  • VITTARTH (Finance club)

Vittarth is the Finance Club of DoMS IIT Roorkee. The Club is known for enabling students to discover their true potential through knowledge sharing on finance and organizing various events which include guest lectures, presentations, simulations games etc. It organises events like Vyapar, iTax, Corporata & Banking and Finance Workshop. It organizes the annual Operations summit 'Manthan' which in recent past has involved imminent speakers like Mr. Rajiv Saksena, Associate Director & Dy. Head Corporate Group, North BNP Paribas

  • VYAVAHR (HR club)

VyavaHR is the authorized Human Resource club of the Department of Management Studies, IIT Roorkee which strives for academic and professional excellence in the field of human resource and imparting management ethics. It aims to create a network of students and professionals from different institutes, colleges and organizations working in this area. Through workshops, seminars, guest lectures and summits, it endeavor to provide a platform where one can test and enhance their knowledge in the field of human resource. It organizes the annual Operations summit 'Vihaan' which in recent past has involved imminent speakers like Mr. Alok Sheopurkar, Sr. VP and HR-Head, HDFC AMC

  • E-CELL (Entrepreneurship club)

The Entrepreneurship Cell is dedicated to encouraging, promoting and facilitating entrepreneurial activities among MBA students. The E-Cell’s primary activities involve assisting in the establishment of post-graduation entrepreneurial careers and linking E-Cell activities to entrepreneurial networking opportunities on and off campus. The student gets an insight of the development of new businesses through peer discussion and feedback, speeches by guest entrepreneurs, and faculty support including the Business Plan Competition and on and off-campus entrepreneurial workshops.

Events

There are various events organized in the department by students such as:

  • Jigyasa (National Level Paper Presentation Contest)

JIGYASA, a national level paper presentation contest and the flagship event of Department of Management Studies IIT Roorkee, has evolved along with the department since its very inception. In the past, Jigyasa has turned the spotlight on emerging topics such as Knowledge Management, m-Commerce, Innovation, Emerging Technologies, Globalization and Digital Inclusion etc .The aim of Jigyasa is to explore and understand the various perspectives and ideas in order to get a board insight into different aspects of knowledge.Jigyasa which is a sanskrit word meaning 'Curiosity', implies unending quest for discovering things around us. It is a platform for curious minds to show their creativity.

  • Umang (NGO Mela)

UMANG is an initiative to connect academia, non-government organizations, future managers, and social entrepreneurs to facilitate exchange of views and opinions on various social issues. It provides a platform to various stakeholders to interact on different socio-economic issues faced and attempts to sensitize them on the same.

  • Regalia (Alumni Meet)

REGALIA is an annual alumni meet of DOMS IIT Roorkee. Regalia gives a chance to the previous batches to relive their memories, while being back again. As alumni share their moments of joy with the hosting batches they make sure that along with it they guide all the students on how to get the best out of the place in terms of education, learning, experience, fun & free times at DOMS.

  • Confluencia (National Level Symposium)

Confluencia is a National level Symposium hosted by Department of management Studies (DoMS), IIT Roorkee. It aims at bringing together the ideas and opinions from eminent speakers and avant garde from government, academia and industry on a common platform. It makes an earnest attempt at not only defining the problem statements but also at evolving sustainable solutions. The event intends to provide an absorbing learning environment for all the participants.

  • Cognizance (Mgmt. Festival)

Cognizance is a vibrant technical festival was initiated in 2003, with an aim of providing opportunities to the student community to exercise its academic acumen and ingenuity and become a hub for ground-breaking ideas and solutions. Various managerial events are organised by DOMS.

  • Exuberence (Intra IIT sports meet)

Exuberance is Annual Sports Fest of DoMS IIT Roorkee.The event gives a chance to students from both first and second year students to show off their skills and prowess in every sport.

  • Bhor (Intra IIT CSR activity club)

Bhor Bhor is a Deaf awareness week event conducted by the collaboration between Anushruti school and Department of Management Studies. ‘Deaf Awareness Week’ was held from 24th September 2012 to 30th September 2012. This opportunity, identified by a group of committed individuals that included the Professors and the students, was translated into a tangible and grand event that could spend nothing but similes across the entire campus of IIT Roorkee with promises of getting better and bigger in terms of the social cooperation that it exhibited in between the two sections of the same society that continue to be same though differed by a misnomer of ‘ability’.
