Cody Rhodes and Goldust (also known as The Brotherhood[1] or The Rhodes Brothers[2]) is a professional wrestling tag team competing in the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) promotion. Cody and Goldust are half-brothers in real life and were once managed by their father, WWE Hall of Famer "The American Dream" Dusty Rhodes.

The tag team was formed when Cody was fired[A] from the WWE after losing to Randy Orton when he questioned the company's chief operating officer Triple H's authority rules. Goldust returned the following week and fought Orton to rehire Cody, but he lost. As a result, Goldust also was fired, and Dusty attempted to convince The Authority to rehire his sons. Eventually, Triple H and his wife Stephanie McMahon made a decision that the half-brothers would face the two members of The Shield, Roman Reigns, and Seth Rollins, at Battleground. As a stipulation, if Cody and Goldust lost, they would never work in the WWE again, and Dusty would lose his job as a WWE trainer at the Performance Center. This marked the debut match of Cody and Goldust as a tag team with a victory over Reigns and Rollins immediately returning to their jobs.

They were one-time WWE Tag Team Champions as they captured the title in a victorious no disqualification match over The Shield (Reigns and Rollins) with help from the Big Show on Raw. In January 2014, their reign ended when they faced the New Age Outlaws at the Royal Rumble Kickoff in a losing effort.

History

Early years and confrontations

In 1995, Dustin Runnels (better known by his ring name Goldust), the son of WWE Hall of Famer Virgil Runnels (better known as Dusty Rhodes), resigned from World Wrestling Federation (WWF), as it was then known.[B] The gimmick of "The Bizarre One" (the character's nickname), is somewhat spooky, mysterious, with sexually suggestive mannerisms. Vince McMahon, the promotion's chairman, would describe it "androgynous".[4][7] On 22 October 1995, Goldust won his first match against Marty Jannetty at In Your House 4 pay-per-view. After that, he would become a three-time Intercontinental Champion,[8] nine-time Hardcore Champion,[9] and one-time World Tag Team Champion with Booker T.[10][4] However, his contract expired in the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), as it is now known, and they refused to renew it in December 2003.[11] In 2008, Runnels returned to the WWE and turned face on Cyber Sunday under his Goldust persona as part of the three choices (the other two being Roddy Piper and The Honky Tonk Man) that the fans could choose to face Santino Marella for the Intercontinental Championship.[12] After a four-year stint in the WWE, he would be released in 2012.[13]

His half-brother Cody Runnels (known by his ring name Cody Rhodes) is a second-generation professional wrestler and the son of Dusty Rhodes.[14] Using his real name, Cody began wrestling in WWE's developmental territory Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW) in June 2006.[14] On 2 July 2007, Cody made his television debut in a backstage segment with his father Dusty and Randy Orton, where Orton introduced himself to Rhodes and slapped Dusty as a sign of disrespect.[15] On July 9, Rhodes slapped Orton in return and, the following week, Rhodes faced Orton in his debut WWE match, but lost.[16] In the following years, he would become a two-time Intercontinental Champion[8] and a five-time Tag Team Champion (three World Tag Team Championships and one WWE Tag Team Championships) with Legacy and Hardcore Holly.[14][3]

In January 2009, Goldust participated in the annual Royal Rumble match and stared down his half-brother, Cody Rhodes, who ultimately eliminated him.[17][18] In 2010, Goldust married[C] WWE Diva Aksana on November 2 on NXT, with Dusty Rhodes and "Dashing" Cody Rhodes in attendance.[20] In 2013, Goldust made a surprise appearance at the Royal Rumble match on January 26; he appeared as the eighth participant and was once again eliminated by his half-brother.[21] Although he hinted at a possible feud with Cody, he later confirmed in an interview that his return was a one night only deal.[22]

Formation and Tag Team Champions (2013)

Renee, it's no secret that I have been the screw-up of the family ... I've got second, third, fourth chances here, I've mess them all up. Cody getting fired is ridiculous, all because of Triple H ... embarrassing my family's name, the Rhodes' name, that's not cool! So tonight, Cody has a second chance, he gets it cause I mean business.

On 2 September 2013 on Raw, Cody Rhodes was fired[A] from the WWE after failing to defeat the WWE World Heavyweight Champion Randy Orton, a non-title match into which Rhodes was forced after he questioned the company's chief operating officer Triple H's authoritarian rule.[24] Goldust returned the following week to challenge Orton, also in a non-title match, in a failed attempt to get his half-brother Cody rehired.[25] Eventually, their father Dusty Rhodes returned to Raw to convince Stephanie McMahon to give his sons their jobs back. He was unsuccessful and McMahon ordered the Big Show to knock Dusty.[26] In return, the Rhodes Brothers ambushed The Shield on Raw before their 11-on-3 handicap elimination match.[27]

In the next week, Stephanie McMahon and Triple H offered Cody and Goldust their jobs back if they could defeat Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns of The Shield at Battleground. If they lost, they would never work in the WWE again and Dusty would lose his job as a trainer at the Performance Center. All three members of the Rhodes family were immediately attacked by The Shield.[28] On October 6 at Battleground, Cody and Goldust made their debut match as a tag team with Dusty as their manager. They were victorious against Rollins and Reigns, and they were given their jobs back. Various WWE Superstars came out to celebrate with the Rhodes family, including Arn Anderson, Dean Malenko, and Dave Finlay.[29]

Almost 24 hours after Battleground, The Brotherhood was scheduled to team with Daniel Bryan against The Shield. They were declared the winners because Reigns brought a chair into the ring. When Triple H, who was at ringside during the match, decided to restart the bout in a no disqualification, Orton came out of nowhere through the crowd and struck Bryan with an RKO, and Rollins finished for the pin.[30] On October 11 on SmackDown, Cody and Goldust marked the first-ever WWE loss of The Wyatt Family.[31] Cody and Goldust heaped more misery on The Shield as they captured their first WWE Tag Team Championship reign by winning a no disqualification match on October 14 Raw (with the help of the Big Show) over Reigns and Rollins. This was Goldust's first championship title in the WWE in nearly 11 years.[2][32]

On the following Monday on Raw, The Shield faced The Usos in a Number One Contender's Match, in which the winner has the right to face the tag team champions for the title. It resulted a no-contest when Cody and Goldust (who was on commentary during this bout) attacked a taunting Roman Reigns, who interfered in the match.[33] General manager of SmackDown Vickie Guerrero, who was in charge of Raw after Brad Maddox's storyline injury, would later confirm that Cody and Goldust would face The Usos and The Shield in a triple threat tag team competition for the Tag Team Championship at Hell in a Cell, in which they retained the titles.[34] The night after the pay-per-view event, the brothers experienced their first loss as champions to a triumphant The Real Americans.[35]

In a continuation of their feud against The Authority, on November 11 on Raw, the half-brothers fought Orton in a handicap match, which they won. They were involved in a brawl later that evening with The Shield, The Wyatt Family, The Usos, CM Punk, and Daniel Bryan.[36] It was announced the following week that, in the Survivor Series, Cody and Goldust would team up with The Usos and Rey Mysterio against The Shield and The Real Americans in the traditional Survivor Series elimination match, but they were beaten, with Reigns the only survivor of the fight.[37] On November 22 on SmackDown, the half-brothers defeated The Real Americans to retain their Tag Team title.[38] The Rhodes Brothers were scheduled to face The Real Americans, Ryback, Curtis Axel, Rey Mysterio and Big Show at Tables, Ladders & Chairs, as they had recently been defeated by each of these teams. Once again, they successfully defended their title.[39] On December 16 on Raw, Mysterio and Show achieved their win over the champions thanks to Show's knockout punch to Goldust.[40] On SmackDown, they failed against Luke Harper and Erick Rowan, members of The Wyatt Family, both in a non-title match.[41]

The Rhodes Brothers defeated Harper and Rowan on 3 January 2014 SmackDown to retain the title and marked their first win of the year.[42] They once again defended the gold on the special edition of Old School Raw when they won against The Real Americans.[43] However, the half-brothers were defeated to The New Age Outlaws due to an interruption from SmackDown General Manager Vickie Guerrero as she reminded everyone that the Royal Rumble would be taking place in nine days.[44] As a result, the Outlaws were named the number one contenders of the title. The Rhodes Brothers ended their championship reign over Road Dogg and Billy Gunn at the Royal Rumble Kickoff.[45] The following day on Raw, during their rematch for the tag team belts, they were attacked by Brock Lesnar.[46] In effect, Cody and Goldust got their rematch again, but this time it was contested in a steel cage match, which was unsuccessful.[47] In the following weeks, Cody and Goldust would have feuds with different tag teams and stables. On February 10 on Raw, they teamed with Rey Mysterio and challenged The Wyatt Family, but The Rhodes Brothers yielded.[48] On Friday, with The Usos on their team, they won against Ryback, Curtis Axel, and the Outlaws.[49] This led to a victorious tag team match between The Brotherhood and RybAxel (with Larry Hennig) at the Elimination Chamber Kickoff.[50] The half-brothers announced that they would be participating at WrestleMania XXX in the 31-man battle royal for the André the Giant Memorial Trophy. However, in the battle royal, the Rhodes Brothers were both eliminated by Alberto Del Rio.[51] The Brotherhood returned in tag team action with consecutive losses from RybAxel and The Usos. After their bout against The Usos, Goldust helped Cody up, but Cody pushed Goldust away and rolled out of the ring angry.[52][53]
