Career

Butler was drafted by the Texas Rangers in the 35th round of the 2009 Major League Baseball Draft out of Greenbrier Christian Academy in Chesapeake, Virginia. He did not sign and attended Radford University. He was then drafted by the Colorado Rockies in the first round of the 2012 Major League Baseball Draft.[1] He signed with the Rockies, receiving a $1 million signing bonus.[2]

In 2012, Butler was a Pioneer League All-Star after going 7-1 with a 2.13 earned run average and 55 strikeouts.[3][4] Butler began the 2013 season with the Asheville Tourists of the Class A South Atlantic League, but after making nine starts for Asheville, he was promoted to the Modesto Nuts of the Class A-Advanced California League.[5] He was named to appear in the 2013 All-Star Futures Game,[6] where he pitched an inning without allowing a run.[7] Butler made six starts for the Tulsa Drillers of the Class AA Texas League to conclude the season.[2]

The Rockies invited Butler to spring training in 2014.[8] They assigned him to Tulsa to start the 2014 season,[9] and he started Tulsa's season opener.[10]
