About Suzlon

Suzlon Group is a leading Indian Wind Turbine Manufacturer with a global footprint which extends across Asia, Australia, Europe, Africa and North and South America. [3]. Over the past two decades, Suzlon has built and consolidated its presence in over 17 countries, by crossing 14,553 MW of wind power installations globally. [4] . Suzlon’s global wind installations help in reducing 44 million tonnes of CO2 emissions every year. The company has 14 vertically integrated, low cost manufacturing facilities across India, China and USA and a dynamic workforce of over 6,900 employees. Suzlon Group has an extensive range of robust and reliable products designed for various wind conditions and to cater to local geographies. [5]. Suzlon pioneered the 'Concept to Commissioning' model in the wind energy industry. Suzlon invests in vertical integration and its strong in-house R&D set-up is focused on bringing down Cost of Energy (COE). The Group’s Operation & Maintenance Services (OMS) division has more than 14GW globally under service while it’s monitoring centre SCADA monitors and operates wind turbines across regimes and geographies. With ‘Powering a greener tomorrow - Today ’, as its vision, Suzlon Group has mandated Suzlon Foundation, a body established by Suzlon that looks into CSR; and ensures sustainability across all its business operations. [6] Suzlon’s Headquarters, One Earth, located in Pune is environment friendly and is in sync with the Group’s motive. One Earth is LEED certified and one of the greenest Corporate Campuses in the world with Platinum LEED Certification. [7]

Suzlon History

The year 1995 marks the genesis of Suzlon. Tulsi Tanti, the founder of the group, came up with the idea while he was managing a 20 employee textile company. [8] The biggest challenge he faced at that time was the erratic supply and high cost of electricity which offset any profits made by the company. He accidently ventured into Wind energy, while exploring various solutions to this problem. He could foresee an opportunity to leverage Wind energy to ensure stable supply of power for its textile units. The idea of wind turbines took root then and 2 wind turbines were installed in Rajkot, in Gujarat for supplying energy to his business of cold storage and textile mills. But this venture set him thinking of greater use of wind energy and thus was born Suzlon Energy, to cater to the energy requirements of other industries in India. Suzlon adopted a business model wherein clients would be responsible for 25% of the up-front capital investment and Suzlon would arrange the remaining 75% on loan. Initially banks were hesitant to fund loans for this model but by 2008, 40-50 Indian banks were financing wind power projects. In 2001, Tanti sold off the textile business, so he could focus on the development of his wind energy business. Suzlon is still actively run by Tulsi Tanti, now in the role of Chairman, Suzlon Group. [9]

One Earth Campus

One Earth campus is Suzlon’s global corporate headquarters spread over 10 acres of land in Hadapsar, Pune, India. The campus was conceived with a business and functional need to bring all business verticals and corporate services under one roof. [10] One Earth campus provides for a 24x7 globally shared service that forms a strategic 'think tank' for the group across all verticals and locations. The campus is the knowledge and support base for global operations. [11] The One Earth Campus also offers a range of economic and environmental benefits like enhanced comfort for its occupants that help improve productivity. The campus saves 30% to 40% in operating cost, leading to 40% energy savings and 30% lesser water consumption. [12]. One of the most important goals of the One Earth project was to establish an efficient water management plan that included measures such as rain water harvesting, and water recycling systems. [13] The buildings also maintain high health and safety standards for its occupants and ensure prompt medical assistance. [14]

Suzlon Foundation

The Suzlon Group endorsed the CSR mission in December 2007, and launched the Suzlon Foundation to lead corporate social responsibility initiatives. With the motto “Powering a Greener Tomorrow”, Suzlon is committed to sustainable development. [15] Across India, in eight states and two union territories, Suzlon is involved in various CSR activities. Active community participation and sizable contribution in cash and kind indicate that these CSR programs create shared value. [16]. It is a partnership in development, with all stakeholders making their own contributions to enhance natural, financial, social, human and physical resources. [17] Here are some facts and figures of Suzlon’s CSR campaigns:

  • Treated over 3,627 Ha of land & planted over 11,09,993 trees
  • Ensured better education opportunities to 1,35,192 students
