Thanks!

I really like this encyclopedia. It's neat to be able to make it better. It's not always easy to find a way to make a lasting impression for the better, and I guess each edit isn't necessary lasting, but as a whole, it feels good to see the encyclopedia better off because of my work. Thanks for the comment! Sarah crane 13:40, 9 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Gradient Colors

Hi NoSeptember, I've posted a (late) reply to User talk:Tangotango/RfA Analysis/Report, so please take a look. Cheers, Tangotango 14:02, 10 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

There are only three colors because Dragons flight's report only had three, and that idea didn't pop into my head :) Also, (I know RfA isn't a vote, but) it's supposed to represent three modes: Supported, Opposed, and Neutral. Another reason is because I didn't make the gradient code, but had to stitch it together from an example I found on a website. The code is available here - if you, or someone else is skilled in PHP, and can come up with a viable alternative to the three-color approach, I will implement that. Also, can you post a message to WT:RFA inviting other users to discuss this? Thanks, Tangotango 16:11, 10 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Unanimity

Hey NoS, if anyone knows this you would: Is there a list somewhere of all RfAs that were unanimous? CanadianCaesar Cæsar is turn’d to hear 20:51, 10 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Yeah, I was thinking more along the lines of since the subpages were established. Thanks anyway. BTW, I have looked at the old ones that are archived only as external links, and boy, it was different then. RickK's was surprisingly informal, given the later drama that followed his exit. Admin

NoSeptember:

Back in March, you offered to nominate me for admin. In April, you asked me about it again, and I accepted, but said that it would take a while before I was ready to do it. Well, I (finally!) have a full week when I'm fairly sure I'm not going to be away from my computer for more than 24 hours at a time (God and computer failures willing), so if you're still willing, I'd like to take you up on your offer.

DLJessup (talk) 15:04, 13 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You bet. I wrote an intro paragraph a few months back for this which I just dropped at the very bottom of this page. Feel free to suggest modifications. Meanwhile, I will set up the RfA page for you. It's about time ;-). NoSeptember 15:22, 13 June 2006 (UTC)
OK, this page just needs 1) my nom, 2) your acceptance, 3) your answers, and 4) the correct ending time. Then it is ready to go. Go ahead and work on getting the page ready. NoSeptember 15:44, 13 June 2006 (UTC)
The nomination on your page looks good to me. I've answered the questions as best I can. — DLJessup (talk) 15:22, 14 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I responded on my talk page, and I went ahead and posted the RfA. I am only posting this because it's been posted for all of seven minutes, and somebody has already cast a vote. — DLJessup (talk) 21:04, 14 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Edit summaries

Well, I have a monobook that gives me 2 different rollback summaries. One is [revert vandal] and another is [rollback page]. The vandal one says "Reverted vandalism by Example User to last version by Example. Please do not compromise the integrity of pages", and the Rollback page one says "Reverted edits by Example User to last version by Example". That script was written by Voice of All. I guess you could get him to alter that to provide multiple summaries. --GeorgeMoney T·C 19:29, 18 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah. I really don't like it when people use the same rollback summary every single time. For example, one time, I made an edit to a template, which was not vandalism, and because I made one little typo, it messed up the template, but I didn't know, and then somebody rolled back "Reverted edits by GeorgeMoney (talk) to last version by somebody else", and I thought they thought it was vandalism. Then, I had to talk to them on their talk page and wait for a reply, and it was just annoying. I like it whan people say "rv - your edits messed up the template. look at User:Somebody", and then I would be able to find the problem. I think the rollback summaries should be "Reverted vandalism" "Reverted good-faith edits" "Reverted addition of external link" "Reverted personal attack" , etc... --GeorgeMoney T·C 19:45, 18 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A short Esperanzial update

;-) Sorry! Misza13 T C 16:50, 23 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

As you may have gathered, discussions have been raging for about a week on the Esperanza talk page as to the future direction of Esperanza. Some of these are still ongoing and warrant more input (such as the idea to scrap the members list altogether). However, some decisions have been made and the charter has hence been amended. See what happened. Basically, the whole leadership has had a reshuffle, so please review the new, improved charter.

As a result, we are electing 4 people this month. They will replace JoanneB and Pschemp and form a new tranche A, serving until December. Elections will begin on 2006-07-02 and last until 2006-07-09. If you wish to run for a Council position, add your name to the list before 2006-07-02. For more details, see Wikipedia:Esperanza/June 2006 elections.

Thanks and kind, Esperanzial regards, —Celestianpower háblame 16:00, 23 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Editor review maintenence

The list for the editor review is getting extremely unmanageable. I want to try to maintain it so it doesn't get any longer. I noticed that some users' requests were detranscluded/archived/etc.. But would it be a bad idea to archive requests without the users permission (even though it is for the most part an inactive request?)

RFA stats

Hi NoSeptember, I just found a link to your stats from Tangotango's talk page & was pleasantly surprised such detailed stats for RFA's. Although I found a tiny glitch in your stats. Here it says my failed RFA's tally was (60/39/9) whereas it actually it was (60/31/9). Anyway if you need any help in updating/adding the stats, please do inform me. Hey NoSeptember, you recently left a message on my page saying you or someone took the H from my sig or something like that. I am a little bit slow, so I got to ask you, what in the world are you talking about ;) Shalom--Thetrutbelow 02:11, 29 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe you should look lower :). Hey by the way, I was wondering if you would like to join this test wiki. I am an admin/b-crat there, and I would be happy to make you a b-crat there, as you would be great there. It may be useful, but I don't see a name change log, and that would be the most interesting thing to test. NoSeptember 02:47, 29 June 2006 (UTC)
Did you decide to join? Shalom--Thetruthbelow 02:58, 29 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I just made you a b-crat and a sysop so you can edit the main paqe and create a name change log. Also, I was wondering if you could post a link to this sight similar to the one on my user page. Good luck!Shalom--Thetruthbelow 03:29, 29 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. The name change function probably requires a MediaWiki update, I would have thought the most recent version available would have been used when the wiki started, which is so recent. NoSeptember 04:09, 29 June 2006 (UTC)
Name changing is a MediaWiki extention that neither Where or Xyrael haven't installed. It has nothing to do with any different versions of MediaWiki itself. But, b-crats used to be able to do alot more there (i.e. desysop), but then Where installed the Steward extention and now all we can do is promote people to sysop and crat. If you want to experiment with things there that would normally break policy here, please feel free to do so :) --GeorgeMoney (talk) (Help Me Improve!) 04:51, 29 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It's no big deal. If people don't like it I'll change it to something else. I just use it to have the TOC above the header. NoSeptember 22:03, 29 June 2006 (UTC)
Well, what you could do is wrap a <div id="ANIheader"></div> around the header so you can hide it in your css file so then the toc will not be under the header. --GeorgeMoney (talk) (Help Me Improve!) 22:09, 29 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hydnjo's response to the blocking proposal

I thank one and all - Jarandal, Antandrus, Titoxd, Xaosflux, TenOfAllTrades, mboverload, PseudoSudo, Knowledge Seeker, Haukurth, Deathphoenix, Zzyzx11, Tyrenius, Zscout370, AnnH, Rick Block, Tyrenius (again), Zscout370 (again) and NoSeptember for your support.

To Jeffrey O. Gustafson who initiated this block request I ask why? We have had no interaction until now so how do you come to this requested action at WP:AN? Did you come across my account during your own research or are you acting as a proxy for another admin/user with whom I've caused to be angry with me? In reviewing your contributions I see no such "letter of the law" before now and so I feel singled out by you and I have no clue as to why - that to me is most disturbing. If you've come to this action on your own then should I be always wary of another admin challenging the legitimacy of my account?

For TenOfAllTrades who advised me not to worry and Rick who made me laugh I give special thanks, you've helped me to not take this so personally. And to Jeff, thanks for being courteous in informing me of your action and for letting me feel that your heart wasn't for blocking me.
Except for my one explanation above, I haven't edited for a few days now so as to allow y'all to comment about this based on my history of contribution rather than my reaction to it.

I wanted to say all of this before it all goes to archive heaven. I still have a lingering concern that this may arise again and don't want to go through WP life looking over my shoulder or worrying that I might piss-off some admin and cause another inquiry about the legitimacy of my account. If any of you who have been so gracious as to take the time to support me here have any suggestions to prevent such an action, please drop your thoughts on my talk or by email.

Finally, on a personal note to all, I never ever expected so much supportive response from all of you. I know that I've been moody at times and have spoken in ways that I have regretted the next day. I hoped otherwise but it seemed that those unfortunate responses might end up being my legacy as they were the foremost in my mind. And so far as this being a "role account", I think that I'll let the descriptions of AnnH and NoSeptember (both above) stand as the most intuitive descriptions of this account. My (and our) warmest regards to all of you for your understanding and outward support for the continuation of hydnjo's user account and future contributions. Again, my delighted and humble thanks :-) --hydnjo talk 02:03, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

addendum: Jeff, I was confused at the outset in that I wasn't aware of the "role account" policy and then after becoming aware I was frustrated that I had made so many edits which could mislead someone to the conclusion that my account was a role account. I'm sorry that in my zeal to understand your actions that I posed the possibility that you were acting at someone else's behest. I have no evidence of that and it was improper of me to even mention that such a bizarre conspiracy was possible. I find myself guilty of "blaming the messenger" and posting an inappropriate comment about your motivation.

As for my account, I want to state that it is not a role account and I apologize for leaving the impression that it is one. "hydnjo" is the signature that I commonly use for much of my correspondence and thought it to be appropriate when I first started my WP account. The portmanteau is an acknowledgment of our shared existence and not an indication that Heidi and I share in editing at WP.

I thank you for your courtesy in informing me at the outset of the discussion at WP:AN and for your compliments about my contributions. The comments in my response were made in the shadow of my own frustration with my having left a trail of edits that could easily be construed as having come from either Heidi or myself. I sincerely apologize to you for making any suggestion as to your motivation in bringing up a legitimate policy question. You have a genuine concern for the orderly behavior of our editors and I thank you for initiating this discussion and providing me the opportunity to explain the nature of my account. --hydnjo talk 19:10, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Admin project

I made a change to User:NoSeptember/Admin stats by making the little things that say other pages look like the real subpage thingy, and I was wondering if it would be ok with you if i did that to all the admin project pages. Also i was wondering if you approved, that i should wrap <div id="contentSub"> around the links. The good thing about that is if people style the little subpage navigation thing in their css, it would do the same to that. The bad thing is if they make a #contentSub { display: none }, then the fake one wouldn't show either. We could copy the css from the http://en.wikipedia.org/skins-1.5/monobook/main.css , but the problem then would be if they change skins, or they want to style it, it wouldn't work change with their styling needs. What do you think? GeorgeMoney (talk) 14:17, 21 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Or maybe we could do a <div id="contentSub" style="display: block !important;">, so the !important would override all css (because ususally css overrides html) unless they have a !important in their css too. GeorgeMoney (talk)
I like the look of it. Go ahead as you think best on the other pages. I'm not concerned if a few people can't see it because of their personal settings. The links are just there to encourage people to look around at my various subpages, and to help me navigate. NoSeptember 14:29, 21 July 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for being nice (especially in my time of pain) :-)

Thank you for contributing the impressive the pile of supports gathered on my RfA, which passed with a final tally of 0x0104/0x01/0x00. I'm happy that so many people have put faith in my abilities as an admin and promise to use the tools wisely and do my best not to let you down. My 2nd RFA (future)

When do you think I'll be ready (options below)?

(A)1000 main namespace edits
(B)50% (about 1500) mainspace edits
(C)3 months
(D)Other

GangstaEB~(penguin logs) 18:38, 24 July 2006 (UTC)

Ohh, can I have a review too? My goals are:
  • Way more article edits........ Way more.
  • Wait till some time in 2007 (maybe april or may)
  • Wait till long enough until some things in my history that..... I'm kinda not proud of.... become things of the past
What do you think? (And don't worry, I won't be offended if you point something out bad in me) GeorgeMoney (talk) 20:29, 25 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Well, the reason I want to wait so long is because I am not really "desprate" for adminship. Right now, I would just think adminship is a "convienence" (sp?). I guess blocking vandals and deleting junk would be good, but there is aiv and speedy deletion. And, I do plan to work on articles in userspace and move them out. About the mss welcomings, I just love when they thank me for welcoming them or ask me questions about wp (like the person who commented on my talkpage a section above your comment). New users are just so......... nice, and I love interacting with them. GeorgeMoney (talk) 08:42, 26 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

RfAs with low numbers of votes

Just wondering: Would successful RfAs with low numbers of support/total votes be notable nowadays? Maybe we can start taking note of these? Kimchi.sg 16:07, 25 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I was thinking of those RfAs that succeed with less than (say) 50 support votes. Those must be pretty rare this quarter and probably this year as well. The inspiration came from looking at RyanGerbil10 RfA's current vote count. Kimchi.sg 16:18, 25 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

P.S. I just converted the new message link in your sig page to use fullurl. Kimchi.sg 16:22, 25 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

There was a informal minimum number of votes? Hmm... I must have entered the RfA scene too late. :) Kimchi.sg 16:26, 25 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Cecropia alluded to 15 total votes as "low"... nowadays our RfA community is so active, I suspect we might never again see any successful RfA with less than 30 support votes. Kimchi.sg 16:47, 25 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Whoops... missed the bit about 20 supports. Saw it a second time. Kimchi.sg 16:49, 25 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks from Mr. Oversight

Hey NoSeptember. Thank you for the good vibe message! And I like the moniker too (next thing you know, I'll be calling myself "Lord Redux" -- while they haul me in for shock therapy ;)).
I had never considered requesting CheckUser, although I am a little concerned with the fact that only two users seem to be handling the workload at RCU. If people want me to help out on that front, I would be glad to help. Essjay and Mackensen are doing a good job, but it can be problematic to rely on just two users. Is there a general feeling that more active people with CheckUser would be necessary?
I suspect the ArbCom would not be too happy about considering yet another request from me. I can see their reply to my request: "You again!!?". Cheers, Redux 16:31, 25 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, I'll ask the ArbCom to consider it. Feel free to jump on the wagon :) Redux 17:10, 25 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I try to keep my promises...

It may have taken me a year, but I finally got around to constructing lists organizing opinions by Supreme Court justice. I have finished three terms for Scalia so far: 2003; 2004; and 2005; the lists I've finished for the other justices can be seen here. Postdlf 21:35, 26 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

RfA standards

Hi NoSeptember! I saw your recent posts on WT:RFA, and while I felt that conversation was too far along to really jump in, I respect your opinions on RfA issues, and I was hoping to get your thoughts on my new RfA criteria. It's very similar to what you suggested on the talk page, with a couple extra criteria. Any thoughts, for or against it? EWS23 (Leave me a message!) 02:48, 27 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the reply. :o) Some I've talked to consider them too simplistic or perhaps too utopian or hard to quantify. However, I hope if I can stick strictly to it, I can support those that deserve to be supported, and try to comment with logic and good reason. Thanks again, EWS23 (Leave me a message!) 10:15, 27 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

RE: Wanna be list

Thanks for your efforts maintaining the Esperanza wanna be list. When I created that section back in February, I wasn't sure people would want it, but we were in the habit of deleting the names of people who added themselves to the member list without qualifying. But this section needs to be watched, something I have not been doing much of late, and I am glad that you are notifying people when they become qualified :). NoSeptember 12:55, 30 July 2006 (UTC)

No problem, I was at a lose end and Esperanza could always use some new civil editors! Sorry about the slack reply, I was sunning myself in Paris.
