7th Dragon (セブンスドラゴン, Sebunsu Doragon) is a role-playing video game for Nintendo DS developed by imageepoch and published by Sega in Japan on March 5, 2009.[1][2]

Story

The first7th Dragon game takes place in the world of Eden of which 80% is ruled by dragons and infested with poisonous Flowaro flowers. The premise of the game is to: Kill all the Dragons, or all life will be wiped out of existence.[3]

Gameplay

When players start their journey, they can create their own characters from the following classes: Mage, Princess, Rogue, Knight, Samurai, Fighter, or Healer. Outside of battle the characters will be viewed traveling the overworld from an overhead perspective, while the battles are viewed from a side perspective showing each character as they attack their foes.[4]

Development

The game was produced by Rieko Kodama and the design team consists of composer Yuzo Koshiro, character designer Mota, as well as monster designer Akifumi Yamamoto.[5] At the helm of the project is the director of the first entries in the Trauma Center and Etrian Odyssey series, Kazuya Niinou.

Reception

The Japanese magazine Famitsu scored 7th Dragon 9/8/8/8 for a total of 33 out of 40 points.[6] The game was the second best-selling game the week of its release at 80,000 copies.[7] An additional 22,000 units were sold the following week.[8]

Sequels

A spin-off sequel for the PSP titled 7th Dragon 2020 was released in Japan on November 23, 2011 for the PSP.[9] It is the first of the 7th Dragon series to feature polygon graphics. The setting takes place in Japan, around year A.D 2020 within a post-apocalyptic Tokyo, where space dragons and mutated monsters have invaded and reduced the human populations' numbers everywhere. In order to save humanity of the dragons, a dragon exterminating organization, Murakumo, sends out the player's rookie squad number 13 to reclaim Japan from the dragons. This game features new, modernized classes to fit the modern era, with some local exceptions.

A direct sequel to 2020, 7th Dragon 2020-II, was released on April 18, 2013 again exclusively in Japan for the PSP. Vocaloid Hatsune Miku appeared in both games as a non playable character; 2020-II features the return of DIVA Mode game option which interchangeably switches all regular BGMs into Hatsune Miku accompanied partial-vocal songs. 2020-II takes place a year after the events of 2020, in the year 2021, where the player's Murakumo Squad 13 are living peacefully in reconstruction of the region until new dragons suddenly invade once more, this time bringing more drastic threats than before. A new Idol class is added to the 2020 classes, and acts as a support class having emerged from the previous year's celebrations of fending of the dragons. A new character type "Lucier" is Hatsune Miku Returns For 7th Dragon 2020-II Opening Movie</ref>. sasakure.UK alongside Yuzo Koshiro are the music composers for both 2020 and 2020-II's opening themes and majority of the games' soundtracks, while Shirow Miwa is the character designer.

A fourth game, 7th Dragon III Code: VFD, takes place in Tokyo ward, year 2100, roughly 80 years after the events of 2020 and 2020-II and follows the story of the Nodens Corporation's attempt to complete the Dragon Chronicle in time to save humanity from the awakening of the titular seventh Divine Dragon, an event that will almost certainly spell doom for the human race. In the process of saving the world from dragons again, a dragon extermination squad travels to the past and future in order to complete the Dragon Chronicle while meeting new allies. This time, the game is on the Nintendo 3DS and features more detailed 3D character models. Several new classes are added and take place of some modernized classes previously available in the 2020 games, with some 2020 classes still intact such as Samurai. A demo is currently available on the 3DS eShop, with the full game released on October 15, 2015, and allows the transfer of the demo data to receive some minor bonus items in the full version. Shirow Miwa returns as the character designer while sasakure.UK and Yuzo Koshiro return as part of the music composition.
