2017 in British music charts

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is an old revision of this page, as edited by 86.176.4.145 (talk) at 16:35, 12 May 2017 (→‎Week 19 (11 May)). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

This is a summary of the year 2017 in British music charts.

The UK Singles Chart and UK Albums Chart are two of many music charts compiled by the Official Charts Company (OCC) that calculates the best-selling singles and albums of the week in the United Kingdom.[1] Since 2004, the charts have been based on the sales of both physical singles and albums and digital downloads. Since 2014, the singles chart has been based on both sales and streaming; in 2017 it uses the ratio of 150 streams equivalent to one sale (not 100:1 as previously).[2] Since 2015, the albums chart has also been based on both sales and streaming.

Records

In week ending 16 March, Ed Sheeran became the first artist to hold the top 5 positions in the singles chart, the artist with the most songs in the top 20 with sixteen, the most in the top 10 with nine and his album ÷ scored the most tracks to reach the top 10 with ten (nine this week and one previously).

Number one artists

In the singles chart, Clean Bandit returned to the top of the charts, having reached number 1 in 2016 with "Rockabye". Harry Styles and DJ Khaled have both claimed their first number 1 single as a lead artist.

In the albums chart, Little Mix returned to the top of the charts, having reached number 1 in 2016 with Glory Days.

Pete Tong, Rag'n'Bone Man and Stormzy have all claimed their first number 1 album.

Chart summary

The following summaries refer to the Top 40 Official Singles Chart (not the full Top 100). These charts are archived by The Official Charts Company here.

The date of each chart as given by the Official Charts Company is the Thursday following its publication on Friday e.g. the chart which was announced by OCC and BBC Radio 1 on Friday 6 January 2017 was published as Thursday 12 January 2017. The actual sales, therefore, take place the previous week, e.g. chart dated 5 January 2017 comprises sales from 23–29 December 2016 (in this case sales which count towards 2016 totals).
