Daria Berenato[7] (born September 24, 1993) is an American professional wrestler and mixed martial artist. She is signed to WWE under the ring name Sonya Deville, performing on the SmackDown brand as one-half of the duo Absolution.[8]
Berenato was a contestant in the 2015 season of WWE Tough Enough, coming in eleventh. In October 2015, she signed a contract with WWE and was assigned to the WWE Performance Center in Orlando, Florida.
Early life
Berenato was born in Shamong Township, New Jersey to Italian parents.[9] She attended Seneca High School in Tabernacle, New Jersey.[1] At the age of 17, Berenato began training and competing in mixed martial arts.[1]
Professional wrestling career
Tough Enough and NXT (2015–2017)
In June 2015, Berenato was one of the thirteen finalists for the sixth season of the WWE competition Tough Enough.[10] She was the third competitor eliminated from the competition.[11]
In October 2015, Berenato signed a contract with WWE,[12] and was assigned to their developmental brand NXT to begin her training. She made her in-ring debut on December 30 during a live event against Nia Jax, which she lost. Berenato made her first televised appearance and in-ring debut under her real name on the August 17 episode of NXT, where she competed in a six-woman tag team match along with Mandy Rose, and Alexa Bliss, in which they were defeated by Carmella, Liv Morgan, and Nikki Glencross.[2] Berenato returned to television on the November 23 episode of NXT in another six-woman tag team match with The Iconic Duo (Billie Kay and Peyton Royce), where they lost to Aliyah, Ember Moon and Liv Morgan.[13] On the December 21 episode of NXT, Berenato competed in her first televised singles match, where she was defeated by Billie Kay due to a distraction by Peyton Royce.[14]
Berenato returned on the May 3, 2017 episode of NXT under the new ring name Sonya Deville, participating in a number one contender's battle royal for Asuka's NXT Women's Championship, where she was eliminated by Peyton Royce and Billie Kay.[15] Following this, Deville began a winning streak, defeating Lacey Evans,[16] Rachel Evers,[17] Jenna Van Bemel[18] and Zeda.[19] Following another short hiatus, Deville returned on the October 18 episode of NXT, where she participated in a triple threat match against Ember Moon and Ruby Riot to gain an spot on the fatal four-way match for the vacant NXT Women's Championship at NXT TakeOver: WarGames on November 18, which was won by Moon.[20] On the November 22 episode of NXT, Deville was defeated by Ruby Riot.[21] A rematch took place on the December 6 episode of NXT, where both of them faced off in a no holds barred match in which Deville was victorious. Deville then appeared on the December 27 episode of NXT, challenging Ember Moon for the title. She was unsuccessful in winning the title and this would become her last televised match on NXT.[22]
Absolution (2017–present)
On the November 20, 2017, episode of Raw, Deville joined Mandy Rose and the returning Paige as they attacked Sasha Banks, Bayley, Mickie James, and Raw Women's Champion Alexa Bliss, thus establishing herself as a heel in the process.[23] A week later, the trio's name was revealed as Absolution.[24] Deville had her first televised match on the main roster at Tribute to the Troops on December 19, where she won a six-women tag match along with Mandy and Paige by defeating Bayley, Mickie James, and Sasha Banks. On the January 16 episode of Raw, Deville defeated four-time Raw Women's Champion, Sasha Banks. On Raw's 25th anniversary episode, Deville, Rose, Nia Jax, and Alicia Fox were defeated by Asuka, Sasha Banks, Bayley and Mickie James after Banks made Fox submit. At the Royal Rumble, Deville entered at Number 10. She eliminated Torrie Wilson before getting eliminated by Michelle McCool. On the February 5 episode of Raw, Deville and Rose were announced as competitors in the first women's Elimination Chamber match by Raw General Manager Kurt Angle. At Elimination Chamber, Deville was the second woman eliminated by James.
In April 2018, Paige retired from the ring due to suffering major neck injuries thus transferring Paige from her Raw In-Ring posision to Smackdown GM Position, whereas[25] during the 2018 Superstar Shake-up, Deville and Rose were drafted to SmackDown.
