Charalambos Charalambous MP (born 2 December 1967)[1][2] is a British politician. He was elected as the Labour Party MP for Enfield Southgate in 2017.[3] He is the second MP with Cypriot ancestry, and the second whose parents both have a Cypriot background after Baroness Meral Hussein-Ece.[4]
Early life
Charalambous was born in London and raised in Bowes Park, Enfield and has lived there all his life.[5][6][7] His parents come from Kalo Chorio and Fasoulla, both near Limassol, in Cyprus.[8][9] He was educated at Tottenhall Infants School, St Michael-at-Bowes Junior School (where he is now a school governor), Chace Boys Comprehensive School, followed by Tottenham College and then Liverpool Polytechnic[10] where he received a law degree and was elected as vice president of the Students' Union in 1990.[7]
Career
Charalambous is a solicitor, and worked for Hackney Council in their housing litigation team.[7] In the aftermath of the election, Charalambous resigned from his legal job with Hackney Council.[11]
He has been a member of Enfield Council since 1994 for the Palmers Green Ward, and is an Associate Cabinet Member.[12]
Parliamentary career
Charalambous was the official Labour Party candidate for Epping Forest in 2005 and for Enfield Southgate in 2010 and 2015, before being elected in 2017.[6] He became the first MP to have both parents born in Cyprus. He is the second MP of Cypriot parentage, after former Conservative MP Chris Kelly, who represented Dudley South in the 2010–15 parliament had a Cypriot parent.
In January 2018, he was appointed PPS to the Shadow Business Secretary Rebecca Long-Bailey.[13]
