Brooke Lynn Hytes is the stage name of Brock Hayhoe,[1] a Canadian drag queen and ballet dancer. She is best known for competing on the eleventh season of RuPaul's Drag Race, as well as the first Canadian contestant to be on the show.[2][3]
Early life
Hayhoe was born on March 10, 1986[4] in the Etobicoke district in Toronto, Canada. When he was 15, he started to take ballet at the National Ballet School of Canada for five years. He came out as gay when he was 18.[5] At 20, he moved to South Africa, and performed at the Cape Town City Ballet.[6][7] He was living in Nashville, Tennessee before being accepted on Drag Race.[8]
His drag mother is Farra N. Hyte, and her drag sister is Heaven Lee Hytes.[9][10]
Career
In 2014, Hytes was the winner of the Miss Continental pageant.[11]
Drag Race
Hytes was announced to be one of fourteen contestants competing on season eleven of RuPaul's Drag Race on January 24, 2019.[12] She won the main challenges in episode one, five and eleven.[13][14][15] She was in a "double-shantay" lip sync with Yvie Oddly to Demi Lovato's "Sorry Not Sorry".[16][17] Throughout the show, Hytes developed an on-show romance with Vanessa Vanjie Mateo, dubbed "Branjie".[18][19][20] Hytes and Mateo were in the bottom of episode twelve, with Hytes beating Mateo in a lip sync to Aretha Franklin's "A Deeper Love".[21][22][23] Hytes is currently in the top four.[24]
Controversy
After she was announced on Drag Race, Hytes received backlash from an Instagram post in 2013, which features another queen in blackface. Hytes removed and apologized for the post.[25]
