Perhaps there's a better source, but:

"Hytes"

[edit]

So we're referring to the subject as "Hytes" throughout the article (and defaultsort) as if this is a true last name? ---Another Believer (Talk) 15:48, 3 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

That seems to be standard practice on every other drag queen article? 81.79.66.31 (talk) 20:34, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Balenciagah: Please do not refer to the subject as simply "Hytes" throughout, without discussing here first. Let's chat about options, thanks! ---Another Believer (Talk) 03:53, 11 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, happy to! Reasons I assumed it should be 'Hytes': a) Wikipedia naming conventions don't seem to suggest that stage names (which I assume "Brooke Lynn Hytes" counts as) should be written out in full each time; see pages on e.g. Slim Pickens or Lady Gaga; b) I think it has been written as 'Hytes' in this article for several years; c) I think using the full name every time reads quite unprofessionally and would not be academic practice; d) news articles often refer to her simply as 'Hytes'; e) most other drag queens with comparable non-true "last names" are referred to as such in their articles, so if we're making that standard practice, there probably needs to be a very widespread edit? Would genuinely love to hear your reasons re: the full name or alternatives. Balenciagah (talk) 22:38, 11 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, to be fair, I take the "most" drag queen articles assertion back; having clicked through around 50 relevant articles I think it's more like 50/50. I do stand by all the other points. Balenciagah (talk) 22:45, 11 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I agree some sources use "Hytes", but others use "Brooke Lynn". I would be more comfortable with using "Hytes" if there was some sort of confirmation that the subject considered "Hytes" to be a last name. I understand she is from the House of Hytes, and her drag mother is Farra N Hyte, but her drag name is also "punny" (in this case, Brooklyn Heights). Not to mention, most people having a discussion about the subject would say "Brooke Lynn", not "Hytes". ---Another Believer (Talk) 23:03, 11 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Also, when comparing to other drag queen articles, I would recommend following the standards used by the entries listed at Wikipedia:WikiProject Drag Race/Showcase. I'm aware of many drag queen bios which incorrectly refer to the subject by a fake last name throughout. Work is needed there, but in the meantime we should not be looking to substandard entries for inspiration. (I also want to acknowledge, how we refer to a drag queen really is a case by case issue based on their name, coverage, etc., so thanks for discussing here so we can come to a consensus!) ---Another Believer (Talk) 23:07, 11 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
