A discussion is taking place as to whether Portal:Macaronesia is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The page will be discussed at Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Portal:Macaronesia until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the page during the discussion, including to improve the page to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the deletion notice from the top of the page. North America1000 00:44, 9 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Unassessed articles tagged as stubs

Hi. Currently, Category:Unassessed Africa articles has over 11,000 pages. Of those, around 5800 are articles that already have stub tags. Would the wikiproject support or object to a bot to go through those pages and assess them as stub-class? Thanks, --DannyS712 (talk) 06:18, 25 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@DannyS712: The project has been a little thin for the past couple of years but I, for one, would support such a move. If an editor finds one that has been incorrectly tagged (and thus incorrectly bot-assessed) they can fix it, which shouldn't be much of a problem. -Indy beetle (talk) 05:04, 27 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Hi DannyS712 -- it seems reasonable to me. I would support. Alanna the Brave (talk) 00:12, 28 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia African Month

Wikipedia African Month logo

Hello members of WikiProject Africa

In the last few months, both French Wikipedia and Portuguese Wikipedia have held a Wikipedia African Month (French; Portuguese). The French event for 2019 was held in May, and the Portuguese event in March. Both were inspired by Wikipedia Asian Month, which was first held in 2015, and now involves a great many language versions of Wikipedia.

As a participant in Wikipedia Asian Month who has also contributed to Wikipedia content about Africa, I now encourage members of WikiProject Africa to set up an English Wikipedia version of Wikipedia African Month. If you want to hold one in 2019, there's still time: I would suggest maybe September or October (but not November - that's when Wikipedia Asian Month is held). For next year, I would suggest that you communicate with the organisers of the event on French and Portuguese Wikipedias with a view to having all language versions of the event held in the same month (and maybe also in other languages, eg Spanish).

Don't be shy about sending messages in English to the French and Portuguese organisers - a lot of the new pages created for this year's French and Portuguese Wikipedia Asian Months are translations of Wikipedia articles originally published on English Wikipedia. As part of any English Wikipedia African Month, the same thing could be done in reverse. Events like these are a great way to spread knowledge across language boundaries. Last year, one of the articles I submitted to English Wikipedia Asian Month about East Timor was translated into Chinese by another editor within 24 hours, and then submitted to Chinese Wikipedia Asian Month.

To hold an English Wikipedia African Month, you just need two or three editors to work together. For guidance in figuring out what to do, I suggest you check out the French Wikipedia pages, which are a bit more elaborate than the Portuguese ones (both can be translated using Google translate). If you need further assistance, you might also wish to contact the organisers of English Wikipedia Asian Month for 2018: their user pages are linked from the English Wikipedia Asian Month 2018 page. @Bahnfrend: As one of the more active Wikipedia editors in Africa-related content, I'd be interested in such an initiative—if only I thought it would lead to some meaningful content creation/improvement. I don't think there's much chance this succeeding, as it seems most en.wikipedia editors are perfectly happy editing about other things. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The 10,000 Challenge has been ongoing since September 2016 and sees an addition only every few days, hence it only being at the (as time of writing) 3443rd improvement. -Indy beetle (talk) 23:27, 2 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Indy beetle: Thanks for your post. I think your point about the 10,000 Challenge is an argument in favour of having a go at a Wikipedia African Month - if an initiative is clearly not being very effective, it's a good idea to try something else. I will be attending the forthcoming Wikimania in Stockholm. I understand that a number of other Wikimedians interested in Africa will also be doing so. I will have a chat with some of them, and maybe then post some more on this page. Bahnfrend (talk) 09:40, 22 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Bahnfrend: - As a fellow contributor to African-related content, I totally agree with @Indy beetle: Whether this would lead to any meaningful content creation I don't know, but there is no harm in trying. I'm definitely game for it. I would probably suggest October which incidentally coincides with Black History Month in the UK.Tamsier (talk) 12:55, 22 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion of "The Kingdom in the Closet" from The Atlantic on the reliable sources noticeboard

The reliability of "The Kingdom in the Closet", by Nadya Labi from The Atlantic, is being discussed on the reliable sources noticeboard. This article was previously cited in the LGBT in the Middle East article. If you're interested, please participate at WP:RSN § The Kingdom in the Closet by Nadya Labi. — Newslinger talk 00:11, 5 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Why post this on the Wiki Project Africa though? This has nothing to do with Africa. Shouldn't this be posted on the Asia or Middle East projects?Tamsier (talk) 09:08, 5 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I posted here because it was one of the projects listed on Talk:LGBT in the Middle East. You're right in that the article from The Atlantic focuses on Saudi Arabia, and is not pertinent to this project. Sorry for the confusion, and I'll be more careful with notifications from now on. — Newslinger talk 11:56, 5 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

African Climate Change workshop

Hello everyone. I want to let everyone know of and invite project volunteers help out with (should you be interested) in the African Climate Change workshop and edit-a-thon that Wikimedia ZA and South South North will be running from the 6-8 August 2019. The event seeks to introduce around 40 climate change experts to editing Wikipedia with a specific focus on adding to the topic of climate change articles on Wikipedia. The focus will be on climate change in Africa. More information can be found on the event page on meta here. --Discott (talk) 13:11, 30 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

errors in your pages on Otuke District, Uganda

There are multiple errors in the Wikipedia page on Otuke District, including antiquated colonial-era place-names which have not been used for many decades, and the page (and all mention of) 'Otuke Town'- which does not exist. These pages do not permit any edits to the first section of each, which contain the spurious references to 'Otuke Town'. If I am posting this message in the wrong place, please advise. Thanks ````
