GOCE December 2019 Newsletter

Guild of Copy Editors December 2019 Newsletter

Hello and welcome to the December 2019 GOCE newsletter, an update of Guild happenings since the September edition. Our Annual Report should be ready in late January.

Election time: Nominations for the election of a new tranche of Guild coordinators to serve for the first half of 2020 will be open from 1 to 15 December. Voting will then take place and the election will close on 31 December at 23:59 UTC. Positions for Guild coordinators, who perform the important behind-the-scenes tasks that keep our project running smoothly, are open to all Wikipedians in good standing. We welcome self-nominations so please consider nominating yourself if you've ever thought about helping out; it's your Guild and it doesn't run itself!

September Drive: Of the thirty-two editors who signed up, twenty-three editors copy edited at least one article; they completed 39 requests and removed 138 articles from the backlog, bringing the backlog to a low of 519 articles.

October Blitz: This event ran from 13 to 19 October, with themes of science, technology and transport articles tagged for copy edit, and Requests. Sixteen editors helped remove 29 articles from the backlog and completed 23 requests.

November Drive: Of the twenty-eight editors who signed up for this event, twenty editors completed at least one copy edit; they completed 29 requests and removed 133 articles from the backlog.

Our December Blitz will run from 15 to 21 December. Sign up now!

Progress report: From September to November 2019, GOCE copy editors processed 154 requests. Over the same period, the backlog of articles tagged for copy editing was reduced by 41% to an all-time low of 479 articles.

Request archiving: The archiving of completed requests has now been automated. Thanks to Zhuyifei1999 and Bobbychan193, YiFeiBot is now archiving the Requests page. Archiving occurs around 24 hours after a user's signature and one of the templates {{Done}}, {{Withdrawn}} or {{Declined}} are placed below the request. The bot uses the Guild's standard "purpose codes" to determine the way it should archive each request so it's important to use the correct codes and templates.

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators; Reidgreg, Baffle gab1978, Miniapolis, Tdslk and Twofingered Typist.

To discontinue receiving GOCE newsletters, please remove your name from our mailing list.

The page File:HSCA Report, Preface 0A.pdf has been speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This was done under section F10 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it was a file that is not an image, sound file or video clip (e.g. a Microsoft Word document or PDF file) that has no encyclopedic use.

Cheers

Damon Runyon's short story "Dancing Dan's Christmas" is a fun read if you have the time. Right from the start it extols the virtues of the hot Tom and Jerry

This hot Tom and Jerry is an old-time drink that is once used by one and all in this country to celebrate Christmas with, and in fact it is once so popular that many people think Christmas is invented only to furnish an excuse for hot Tom and Jerry, although of course this is by no means true.

No matter what concoction is your favorite to imbibe during this festive season I would like to toast you with it and to thank you for all your work here at the 'pedia this past year. Best wishes for your 2020 as well. MarnetteD|Talk 20:47, 16 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Reviewer of the Year

This year's Reviewer of the Year is Rosguill. Having gotten the reviewer PERM in August 2018, they have been a regular reviewer of articles and redirects, been an active participant in the NPP community, and has been the driving force for the emerging NPP Source Guide that will help reviewers better evaluate sourcing and notability in many countries for which it has historically been difficult.

Special commendation again goes to Onel5969 who ends the year as one of our most prolific reviewers for the second consecutive year. Thanks also to Boleyn and JTtheOG who have been in the top 5 for the last two years as well.

Several newer editors have done a lot of work with CAPTAIN MEDUSA and DannyS712 (who has also written bots which have patrolled thousands of redirects) being new reviewers since this time last year.

Thanks to them and to everyone reading this who has participated in New Page Patrol this year.

Redirect autopatrol

A recent Request for Comment on creating a new redirect autopatrol pseduo-permission was closed early. New Page Reviewers are now able to nominate editors who have an established track record creating uncontroversial redirects. At the individual discretion of any administrator or after 24 hours and a consensus of at least 3 New Page Reviewers an editor may be added to a list of users whose redirects will be patrolled automatically by DannyS712 bot III.

Source Guide Discussion

Set to launch early in the new year is our first New Page Patrol Source Guide discussion. These discussions are designed to solicit input on sources in places and topic areas that might otherwise be harder for reviewers to evaluate. The hope is that this will allow us to improve the accuracy of our patrols for articles using these sources (and/or give us places to perform a WP:BEFORE prior to nominating for deletion). Please watch the New Page Patrol talk page for more information.

This month's refresher course

While New Page Reviewers are an experienced set of editors, we all benefit from an occasional review. This month consider refreshing yourself on Wikipedia:Notability (geographic features). Also consider how we can take the time for quality in this area. For instance, sources to verify human settlements, which are presumed notable, can often be found in seconds. This lets us avoid the (ugly) 'Needs more refs' tag.

About this article Gudiya Hamari Sabhi Pe Bhari

This article is not at all eligible for deletion, it is a national TV serial of a national television network of India. I live in India and I am Indian so I knew more than any outsiders, isn't it. See this Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Gudiya Hamari Sabhi Pe Bhari. Thank you Kitaab Ka Kida (talk) 19:36, 22 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Joyous Season

Deleted article re-appears

Greetings, Usernamekiran. You deleted the article on Brahma Chellaney but it seems it has been resurrected. Would that merit a generous dose of salt, perhaps? -The Gnome (talk) 08:25, 26 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

  • Thanks for the response, Anthony Appleyard. In the link to which you directed us, GeoffreyT2000 requested the following: "The page User talk:Alpinespace/sandbox had some deleted edits, and those edits should be restored and merged into the history of Brahma Chellaney. Also, the deleted edits for Brahma Chellaney and Talk:Brahma Chellaney should be restored following the article's recreation. (GeoffreyT2000, 22 December 2019)" Could you please help me understand how we can have an "article's recreation" after (immediately after) the article's deletion following an AfD? Thanks in advance. -The Gnome (talk) 03:51, 27 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Anthony Appleyard, the starting point I believe, after the decision to delete it, is to make sure the article "Brahma Chellaney" no longer appears on Wikipedia. Let's start with that action and then you as an admin may do whatever you decide to do in order to accomodate GeoffreyT2000's request, if possible. Thanks again for the prompt response. -The Gnome (talk) 10:35, 27 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • I'm afraid, Anthony Appleyard, that, after a decision to delete has been taken, we are in no position to ask whether or not an article "contain[s] any queryable matter". The text may have been improved but the process of posting up the text immediately after the AfD is against all due-process etiquette; such action effectively renders the AfD process null and void. I ask you to delete the article a.s.a.p. and, moreover, salt it, in view of the attempt by a dedicated account to revive it (which is, so far, unfortunately, allowed to succeed). Let's do the right thing here! -The Gnome (talk) 16:01, 28 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • @The Gnome, Usernamekiran, and GeoffreyT2000: I have now deleted page Brahma Chellaney. Anthony Appleyard (talk) 16:41, 28 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • @The Gnome, Usernamekiran, GeoffreyT2000, and Anthony Appleyard: This whole issue has arisen because the article on Brahma Chellaney was unjustly deleted on 08 November 2019. That article had been on Wikipedia for nearly 11 years. Over this period, many had contributed to it or edited its contents. If there was any issue with that article, the problem areas should have been flagged and efforts made to correct them. But, in one fell swoop, the article was deleted. This was clearly a drastic action. Believing the step to be unfair, I approached Anthony Appleyard and then re-created a much shorter article with relevant citations. The intent was to present an objective overview to Wikipedia readers. If re-creation of an article after AfD is problematic, as The Gnome has submitted, then the original deletion decision of 08 November 2019 should be reversed to allow for the purging of any promotional elements in the article. Having no article on Brahma Chellaney, I'm afraid, will not redound to Wikipedia's credit, especially since Wikipedia carries articles on lesser known academics. Let's be fair. Alpinespace (talk) 13:51, 29 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • An article can exist for one or eleven years in Wikipedia and then get rightfully deleted because the current standards do not allow its inclusion, because there was an overwight when it first came up, or for any other legitimate reason. You're presenting arguments for retaining an article, any article really, that are not acceptable in Wikipedia policy, e.g. "many people have worked on it." The contested article has gone through the AfD process twice and both times the decision was to delete it. Instead of trying the back foor of illegitimately recreating a deleted article, it is recommended that you or anyone else (I'm guessing some relation exists among the rather dedicated accounts around this issue) use the drafting process and ask advice from an experienced administrator about the worthiness of the subject, the proper way of preparing your draft text, etc. -The Gnome (talk) 21:50, 29 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Deleted article re-appears

  • @The Gnome, Usernamekiran, GeoffreyT2000, and Anthony Appleyard: Wikipedia represents a collaborative system of contributors. But the manner in which the original article was deleted, as well as the removal of the shorter version I created in its place after consulting Anthony Appleyard, undercuts the collaborative spirit. Any deletion must be a reasoned and consensual decision among editors under Wikipedia rules. I’m afraid that rule wasn’t adhered to. I am also struck by the peremptory tone of The Gnome. Not only did he falsely accuse me of running a dedicated account (I have no relationship with the subject of the deleted article), but also he imperiously ordered an experienced and respected administrator like Anthony Appleyard to delete my contribution asap. This raises a larger issue than the specific AfD — about the need to be congenial and collaborative. A little respect and congeniality can go a long way. I wish you all a happy, peaceful and fulfilling New Year. Alpinespace (talk) 15:23, 31 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
