Lost in Space is an American science fiction television series and is a reimagining of the 1965 series of the same name (itself a reimagining of the 1812 novel The Swiss Family Robinson), following the adventures of a family of space colonists whose spaceship veers off course.

Produced by Legendary Television, Synthesis Entertainment, Clickety-Clack Productions, and Applebox Entertainment, the show is written by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, with Zack Estrin serving as showrunner. Netflix released the series on April 13, 2018, renewing it the following month for a second season. The second season premiered on December 24, 2019.

Premise

In the aftermath of an impact event that threatens the survival of humanity, the Robinson family is selected for the 24th mission of the Resolute (24th Colonist Group), an interstellar spacecraft carrying selected families to colonize the Alpha Centauri star system.

Before they reach their destination, an alien robot breaches the Resolute's hull. Forced to evacuate the mothership in short-range Jupiter spacecraft, scores of colonists, among them the Robinsons, crash on a nearby habitable planet. There they must contend with a strange environment and battle their own personal demons as they search for a way back to the Resolute.

After an asteroid crashed into Earth causing global catastrophe, humans are leaving the planet for a colony in the Alpha Centauri system. Their spacecraft, Resolute, is attacked by aliens, forcing the colonists to escape in their Jupiter spacecrafts, but are hurled into a wormhole and crash-landing on an Earth-like planet. The Robinsons' ship, Jupiter 2, crashes into a glacial bed. The family evacuates as their ship sinks in rapidly freezing water. Eldest Robinson child Judy, a teen-aged doctor, becomes trapped in ice while diving to the sunken ship for equipment. John and son Will set out to collect magnesium to melt the ice before Judy's oxygen runs out. While trapped, Judy guides her sister, Penny, through a medical procedure to treat their injured mother, Maureen. Inside a cave, Will falls down a chasm, landing near a forest. Will finds a crashed alien ship and a dismembered robot he helps to self-repair. In return, it saves Will from a forest fire. Will and the robot return to the Robinson base camp, and the robot rescues Judy. Don West and Smith survive the Jupiter 18 crash landing. Searching for other survivors, they find seriously injured Angela Goddard. Don and Angela take cover during a storm while Smith heads out. Meanwhile, the robot melts more ice to allow the Jupiter 2 to be recovered. Penny and Judy continue raising the sunken ship while Maureen, John, Will, and the robot hike to another Jupiter crash site they have spotted. They also inspect the robot's wrecked ship. Inside, a holographic map shows they are stranded in an unidentified galaxy. Outside, the robot touches the ship's hull, creating a mental connection to Will who "sees" what actually happened aboard the Resolute: the attackers were robots like his, who was also there. When Penny detects a storm approaching, she accelerates raising the Jupiter 2 to access the ship's Chariot all-terrain vehicle. She rescues the family ahead of the storm. While heading back to Jupiter 2 they find Smith, who claims to be alone.

In a flashback, Dr. Smith is revealed to be June Harris, the older, ex-con sister of Jessica Harris, a successful businesswoman. Jessica offers June her entire estate as she is leaving Earth, but June drugs Jessica and assumes her identity. Aboard the Resolute, she bumps into Jessica's lover. In an ensuing altercation, he is blown out an airlock. June is arrested but escapes during the robot's attack. In the present, Maureen explains they are trillions of light years off course. At night, the refreezing ice layer over Jupiter 2 cracks, endangering the ship. While rushing to complete repairs, the group discovers large eel-like creatures in the conduits consuming fuel. The glacier shifts, forcing an emergency take-off after the eels are flushed from the engines. There is enough fuel to take off and land near a forest. Comms pick up radio communication from other survivors and also from Resolute, that is searching for survivors. Somebody hacks the onboard 3D printer to make a gun. Will finds it, and hides the weapon under his mattress, unaware Smith is watching.

Without fuel, the family initiates Jupiter 2's colonization protocol. Smith and Will discuss the robot, who does Will's bidding. Don West and Angela are rescued by the Watanabe family; Hiroki Watanabe reunites with John and Maureen at Jupiter 11 where Judy treats Angela. Angela tells Judy about the Resolute attack. The fuel-consuming eels prevent the other Jupiters from taking off. The transmitting communication dish has also been damaged, leaving the colonists unable to contact the Resolute. While Maureen and John go on a short mission, Judy confronts Will about the robot attack on the Resolute. They hide the robot in a nearby cave, unaware Smith has followed them. They run into Vijay Dhar, son of Victor Dhar, a colonist leader. The next morning, the kids return to Jupiter 2 before their parents' arrival. Inside the cave, Smith attempts to instill distrust in the robot about Will. During their mission, John and Maureen discuss their marital issues. When they return, the kids tell them the robot wandered away.

The colonists build a light tower to signal the Resolute. Maureen, noticing strange weather phenomena, discovers that the sun is paired with a black hole resulting in Hawking radiation that will soon render the planet uninhabitable. Meanwhile, Penny develops a crush on Vijay. When Don confronts Dr. Smith about a stolen flare gun, she claims she took it by mistake. In a flashback, Maureen and the kids discuss the pros versus cons of going to Alpha Centauri. Don tells Judy about his suspicions regarding Dr. Smith's identity. When Judy confronts Dr. Smith, she lies and casts doubt on Don. When the colonists activate the light signal, Dr. Smith, knowing she will be arrested back aboard Resolute, shuts down the perimeter fence. When large reptilian creatures enter the camp and destroy the light tower, Will summons the robot for help. When it assumes its original multi-limb form, the colonists recognize it as the robot from the Resolute attack.

Penny overhears Maureen telling John about the black hole. In a heated discussion, John convinces the other survivors to allow the robot to stay. He then takes Will on a hike to discuss his responsibility for the robot's actions and has Will build a stone memorial to the 27 casualties. Don, along with Victor Dhar, Judy, and other colonists set out to retrieve the fuel in Don's Jupiter. It crashed in the desert where there are no eel-like creatures. While inside the crashed ship, Don retrieves the real Dr. Smith's identification, later showing Judy. Maureen learns that Hiroki also knows the planet is dying. Penny tells Vijay about the black hole but swears him to secrecy, then they share a kiss. Dr. Smith manipulates the distraught Angela to shoot the robot, sending it into attack mode and accidentally injuring John. Distraught, Will orders the robot to walk off a cliff, then places another stone on the memorial.

While Judy and Don are driving back to Jupiter 2, Maureen confronts Will, who confirms that the robot 3D-printed the gun, and that he hid it. Smith deflects blame for Angela's attack by suggesting that Victor Dhar might have taken the gun. En route to another Jupiter, John and Maureen's chariot rover gets stuck in a tar pit and sinks. Before escaping, Maureen admits she falsified Will's test results to colonist qualification as he failed the stress test. Meanwhile, Smith locates the destroyed robot, but is unable to get it to reassemble itself, later finding the alien signal triggering a booting response. While Don's group speeds through a geyser field with the recovered fuel, the tanker flips, and Evan becomes trapped underneath. Moving the tanker to save Evan will cause most of the fuel to be lost. It is decided to move the tanker, losing fuel, but Evan dies anyway. Back on Jupiter 2, Dr. Smith finally reactivates the robot. When Victor returns home, Vijay informs him about the planet's coming demise. Victor decides to use the fuel they retrieved to launch his Jupiter 4.

When Maureen can't talk the Dhars out of launching, John sneaks aboard their Jupiter 4 and triggers the emergency shut down. Later, the gathered colonists are told the planet is becoming uninhabitable; Penny breaks up with Vijay learning he told his father about the black hole. Maureen devises a launch plan by piloting the Jupiters like the Apollo program, with John and Don as pilots. Judy informs Maureen about the real Dr. Smith, so Maureen confines the fake Smith as she then claims to really be physicist Jessica Harris. Removing life support to trim extra weight, the Resolute signals they must leave orbit within 24 hours due to the approaching Hawking radiation. This news forces John and Don to launch in the Jupiter 4 ahead of schedule in the evening. Smith deceives Will with a promise to save his dad and escapes, knocking out Maureen just when John needs her flight instructions. Without instruction and with everyone watching from the ground, the ship explodes mid-air.

Will tries signaling his father using his radio. Dr. Smith drives a captive Maureen to the alien wreck. She claims she did not know that Maureen was guiding the ship launch. Dr. Smith promises to help Maureen get her children off the planet in exchange for Maureen helping her with the alien ship. Will discovers that the cave rocks he collected are petrified biomass and can fuel the Jupiter ships to reach the Resolute. While colonists harvest the biomass, Judy searches for Maureen. The colonists gather enough biomass to power all the Jupiters but they must remove it quietly to avoid waking the dangerous winged predators roosting in the cave. Will detects a signal he believes is from John. Periodic flashbacks reveal the Christmas Star was not a meteor but an alien craft. Its engine was used to build Resolute. The robot's attack was an attempt to retrieve the stolen engine. The group narrowly escape the cave after awakening the creatures. Judy tracks down Smith and Maureen. She disables Dr. Smith, but the robot reactivates and now obeys the Doctor's commands.

Having survived the explosion, John and Don cling to the ship's wreckage in orbit, with only hours of air left and message Will. The Robot now under Smith's control rejects Will's attempt to re-bond, but Smith allows Maureen's rescue attempt of John in the Jupiter 2. Victor hails the Robinsons, saying all colonists on the Resolute must leave in one hour to avoid the radiation. Maureen traps Dr. Smith and the robot, but they escape shortly thereafter. After Maureen lures the robot into the cargo bay and knocks him into space, a second alien robot (SAR) arrives to retrieve its engine. As SAR is about to kill Will, his Robot remembers their friendship and saves Will, hurtling both it and SAR robots into space. Will goes outside to manually close the damaged open hatch, but losing his grip he is saved by John, rescued by Smith shooting a harpoon. With all Robinsons safely aboard Jupiter 2, Maureen confines Dr. Smith, grateful but still distrusting. Before they can dock with Resolute, the alien engine activates and catapults Jupiter 2 to a different solar system. Will recognizes the system's configuration from the Robot's sand drawing as "Danger."

Seven months later, the Jupiter 2 crew are stranded on an oceanic planet with a lethal methane-rich atmosphere, while Maureen tries understanding The Robot's star engine. Celebrating Christmas, Will self publishes Penny's book "Lost in Space" for the family to read. After a breach of the atmosphere destroys their food supply, to try to recharge the ship's battery by adding sails to the Jupiter's hull and navigating to an area with potent electrical storm activity. Mid-voyage, they hit a reef while avoiding a monsoon which injures John, forcing Maureen to release the imprisoned Smith so she can guide them. Seeing no way of avoiding a jagged shore, Smith helms the Jupiter to go through it by way of a narrow pass, saving everyone. Smith later reveals to Maureen that she had deliberately breached the atmosphere, as John was too content with making a "home" with his family. Continuing their voyage, they come upon an artificial crevice in the ocean itself, of the same origin as The Robot.

With Jupiter 2 on the precipice to the crevice, the Robinsons plan to siphon the atmosphere for fuel and use a lightning strike to charge the ship, but invasive kelp renders the Jupiter immobile. The kelp bites Don's leg, leading to Penny and Maureen being swept off by the water current into the crevice. Judy gives Don a blood transfusion from Smith to cure him of the kelp's toxins, while Maureen and Penny talk about their inability to bond. With the kelp removed, John drops the chariot down via tether to pull them in, but its not reaching far enough forces Penny and Maureen improvise a ladder. As the lightning powers the ship into space, they find a severed arm of SAR (the Second Alien Robot) in the Jupiter reanimated from the power surge. With everyone on board, Maureen sees her monitor of the engine shows a momentary spike from the lightning strike. In the control room, they detect the Resolute's sonar echo and plots a course; Smith hides some kelp in her copy of Penny's book for later.
13	3	"Echoes"	Leslie Hope	Liz Sagal	December 24, 2019 (2019-12-24)
The Robinsons reach the Resolute, only to find it evacuated and on reserve power, as Maureen finds the latest log entry was 7 months ago, when they disappeared. Smith starts a fire on the Resolute to access the ship's stairways, reaching the information center to delete evidence against her and steal the identity of Dr. Smith permanently. Meanwhile, Smith's fire separates the Robinsons into groups: Judy finds Samantha, a young girl who survived being alone; Will and Penny find a stray horse; a damaged robot wanders the halls. Mostly recovered, Don helps navigates the Robinsons from the Jupiter 2, warning them of the other robot. John and Maureen lead the damaged robot away from the kids, and trap it in the engine room. Judy and Samantha encounter Smith, and after seeing Samantha's photo, Smith realizes she killed the little girl's father. Judy later tells the others that SAR and Will's Robot caused the evacuation, with Will's Robot helping people escape. Another Jupiter docks with the Resolute, and mission leader Ben Adler tells them that the damaged robot is called Scarecrow, who has been piloting the Resolute on all 24 missions.
14	4	"Scarecrow"	Jon East	Kari Drake	December 24, 2019 (2019-12-24)
With Scarecrow back in containment, John and Maureen meet Hastings, the Resolute's secret director of piloting Scarecrow. Ben explains in SAR's attack it took their engine, so Maureen offers theirs engine in Jupiter 2. As Hastings' men examine the Robinson star engine, Don, John, and Judy go to the planet below to help the colonists attempt to find water. However, a parasitic metal destroying spore causing the mineshaft to collapse which traps John, so Judy radios Don to have his supervisor Ava halt all traffic to the Resolute to stop the spread. Smith poisons Commander Radic with the Kelp from the methane planet, and her editing of her identity allows her a clean slate, with only Penny on board knowing the truth. Will attempts bonding with the Scarecrow, giving it SAR's detached arm to repair itself, but it attacks him out of a distrusting hate for everything Hasting did to it; Maureen chastises Ben for allowing Will to be endangered, and he apologizes. After touching the damaged engine, Will sees through the robot's vision that it is alive on the planet, by a series of Hoodoos.
15	5	"Run"	Jon East	Vivian Lee	December 24, 2019 (2019-12-24)
In an attempt to escape the well, John is injured falling on debris, and radios Judy. Preparing medical supplies, Judy steals a rover to help John, but gets stranded due to the metal eating spores in the rover, and decides to run across open terrain to reach John. Maintaining communications, Judy tells John not to die as it will irrevocably destroy the family emotionally. She distracts John with memories about growing up, and despite being chased by alien dinosaurs, Judy navigates her way through the landscape to reach the site to deliver John's medical supplies. Don and Ava discover the metal infection spreads by contact, so Ava halts all traffic to quarantine the spread. Maureen and Ben escort Will to the planet to follow his visions to find the Robot, with the two bond over being respective parents. On the Resolute, Penny remains intent on exposing Smith as a fraud and criminal, after hospitalizing Radic; also reconnecting with Vijay during their investigation. However, Smith outsmarts them having already destroyed evidence beforehand. Talking with Penny after school to try and 'befriend' her, Penny spots the metallic infection, urging Vijay and Smith to avoid the contamination.

Despite all metal quarantined because of the rust contamination, the Resolute is still infected when the infection spreads via a worker's titanium knee replacement and open wound. Penny, Vijay, Smith, and Professor Jackson are trapped by the Resolute's quarantine protocols in the classroom. After Ava tells him about amputating the infected ship section, and Penny's location, Don formulates a rescue plan, but in the process confesses to being a smuggler. Planning to fit them in a storage unit, Jackson's claustrophobia hinders his cooperation, until Penny convinces Smith to mind-game Jackson into compliance. Severing the infected area, the four are rescued by Don in a Jupiter, but he is still arrested. Maureen, Will, and Ben search for the Robot on the planet's surface, and it later saves them from a pack of predators. Taking them to a cave attempting communication, Will soon realizes the Robot is truly SAR, with the facade dropped as it wants something from Will. Before revealing its motive, Ben kills SAR to save them. Later on, Maureen inquires Ben about the weapon he used, as Will falls down a fissure to find his friend, the true Robot.

On the ship, John recovers enough to walk and heads to the bridge to talk to Captain Kamal about the water situation. She tells him their scientists have devised a process to decontaminate what they were able to retrieve, and it will take about 53 weeks. Their conversation is interrupted by an audio transmission, which causes Captain Kamal to shut down the bridge and freeze all transports from the planet. John goes to see Don in lockup to see if he can bypass the ship's security system and access the audio transmission, but Don tells him he can't help him so John goes to Dr. Smith and pressures her into using her upgraded security access. Dr. Smith agrees, but tells John that his family will owe her "big time." John and Dr. Smith access the audio transmission, which turns out to be the sound of alien ships -- everywhere. The two are confronted by security as they exit the area, and John is arrested while Dr. Smith is asked to serve the ship in an official capacity. This turns out to be a setup to get Dr. Smith into Hastings' inner circle. She informs John, Judy, and Penny that when Maureen and Will get back, the ship will be leaving for Alpha Centauri. The catch is that the ship will be leaving immediately, with only the people currently on board, and hundreds of people will be left behind on the planet. On the planet, Will reunites with the Robot while Adler remembers a conversation with Hastings. Will, Maureen, Adler, and the Robot travel with the horses to the pickup point. Maureen notices Adler has a scar similar to Will's. Adler tells her that he, too, once thought he had a special connection with an alien robot (Scarecrow) the way that Will and the Robot have a connection, but he was wrong -- the robots are just machines, devoid of feelings, and they don't understand what life is. The group gets caught in a stampede of grazing animals caused by alien raptors, and the Robot protects one of the horses, Gypsy. Gypsy is nicked by one of the animals' horns and dies, and Adler is shocked to see the Robot go through the motions of grief. When the group gets to the pickup point, Adler stops Will and the Robot from getting into the transport container, saying they will take a more "comfortable" form of transportation. The group travels back to the ship and Adler informs Hastings that the Robot can be convinced to help them without force. Hastings tells Maureen about the alien audio transmission and informs her that John has been placed under house arrest for appearances. Maureen looks out the window and wonders if a nearby planet might be have more water.

Maureen comes up with a plan to get the water needed to save all of the colonists from a nearby gas giant and launches a mutiny. In response, Hastings reveals that Maureen gave him her access codes to get Will into the Jupiter program and uses it to nearly suffocate several people in an airlock to death to force Maureen to back down. Maureen manages to rescue the people using a maintenance pod and the mutiny fails, but the captain chooses to trust Maureen's math and goes ahead with the plan anyway to Hastings' frustration. At the same time, Penny tries to convince Will that the Robot has changed which is proven to be true when the Robot chooses to help Scarecrow instead of the Robinsons. In a shocking turn of events, the Robot refuses Will for the first time when he asks him to get the Resolute to Alpha Centauri.

To protect himself from repercussions for his actions, Hastings plots to murder John and Maureen while they are outside the ship during the water reclamation mission. Though Hastings nearly succeeds, the two manage to get back onboard in secret at the last possible minute. The Robot explains that Scarecrow is dying and he wants to save his friend; recognizing his own selfishness in dealing with the Robot, Will agrees to help Scarecrow and the Robinsons and their friends try to come up with a way to return Scarecrow to the planet while Hastings is aided by Smith in foiling them. By playing a shell game, they succeed in getting Scarecrow to Jupiter 2, but are stopped by Adler. The Robot is captured, but Will and the Robot succeed in convincing a remorseful Adler to help Will transport Scarecrow to the planet. As Will and Adler leave, Hastings and Smith hook the Robot up to the alien engine and the torture device.

Adler sacrifices himself to save Scarecrow; Maureen, John and Don seize control of the Resolute from Hastings when he tries to leave without the remaining colonists. An army of robots attack the Resolute to retrieve the alien engine. Maureen and Don trap the robots and come up with a plan to take the 97 children to Alpha Centauri using a Jupiter Transport while the adults remain behind to scatter across the robots' system. With no other option, Judy's plan is accepted and she is made captain of the mission. Smith and Scarecrow sacrifice themselves to buy the children time to escape. Maureen destroys the Resolute and the attacking robots, but she and John are rescued by the Jupiter 2. The "Jupiter Transport" escapes through the rift. However, the Robot has taken them to an unknown star system where they find the Fortuna, a ship that vanished nearly twenty years before, and was commanded by Judy's biological father, Grant Kelly.

Production

Development

In October 2014, it was announced that Legendary Television and Synthesis Entertainment were developing a new reboot of Lost in Space and had hired screenwriting duo Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless to pen the pilot episodes. In November 2015, Netflix landed the project. On June 29, 2016, Netflix ordered a full 10 episode season of Lost in Space, with Zack Estrin as executive producer and showrunner. Sazama, Sharpless, Kevin Burns, Jon Jashni, Neil Marshall, and Marc Helwig also serve as executive producers.

Filming

Production on the first season began in February 2017, in Vancouver, British Columbia, and concluded in July 2017. Season 2 began production in September 2018, in Iceland, and was set to conclude in January 2019.

Release

On March 31, 2018, the series pilot was screened at Awesome Con in Washington, D.C. The first season was released on April 13, 2018, on Netflix. On June 4, 2019, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment released DVDs and Blu-rays of the first season titled "Lost In Space: The Complete First Season".

Reception

The review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes reported a 68% approval rating for Season 1 with an average rating of 6.43/10, based on 75 reviews. The website's critical consensus reads: "Lost in Space's production values are ambitious enough to attract sci-fi adventure fans, while the story's large heart adds an emotional anchor to all the deep space derring-do." Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned a normalized score of 58 out of 100 based on 27 critics for Season 1, indicating "mixed or average reviews".

David Griffin of IGN gave the first season a rating of 8.5/10, calling it "an excellent sci-fi adventure with a slight villain problem," giving particular praise to the Robinson family, while criticizing Parker Posey's Dr. Smith as an unsophisticated and one-dimensional character who lacks redeeming qualities. In contrast, Jen Chaney of Vulture characterized Posey's performance as providing "understated, sly comedic touches", and Beth Elderkin of Gizmodo agrees: "Her performance definitely includes the character’s trademark levity and humor."

The second season was received more positively with Rotten Tomatoes reporting a 82% approval rating for Season 2 with an average rating of 6.6/10, based on 11 reviews.
